Editorial Cartoonists continue to mourn when another newspaper cuts its editorial cartoonist. However, the rest of the newsroom is not immune to layoffs. It was announced this week that the Cincinnati Enquirer is cutting over 100 jobs while Gannet is cutting 1400 nationwide (see here).
What makes it even stranger is that I didn’t see this story at the Cincinnati Beacon until after I drew the latest editorial cartoon. It seems in order to save space (or try to appear more national) The Cincinnati Enquirer masthead is now simply “The Enquirer”. More reason to save space when converting to this format:

Newspapers do totally need to figure something out, and honestly I so have a solution, but I dont want to share it, but I think they need to work outside the box!!!
That’s not fair. You can’t say you have the answer it and not patent it and sell it to the highest bidder.
ok here you go. Do you remember, WAY back in the day when you didn’t actually own your phone, but rather rented it from the phone company.
Now imagine if you will, a group of news papers getting together, and putting together a service where we all may get a kind of Kindel like device, for practically nothing and form there the newspapers would be uploaded onto it every morning, and there would be your paper.
This would be a cost effective model, the news papers would more than make back any money they may loose in supplying the machines by cutting out printing cost and keeping their subscription prices the same. Sense the machine would basically be free to consumers, this would mean that there would be no place for complaints to the continuing of ads being run on this machine.
And if you really want to get crazy, something like amazon could get into the act and then sell downloadable books onto the thing, and offer the price of them to the newspapers for a more discounted price.
while this is not without it’s problems, I have honestly yet to hear anything that makes as much sense to me.
Haha…did you see my response to Jammer yesterday. Great minds think alike…you just have it fleshed out a lot more.
probably needs to be fleshed out, but honestly I am an idea man, the newspapers have people they hire to do all the practical crap 😉
Not just newspapers. So many canned/packet/bottled products have reduced their contents but not the price. I remember most canned vegetables used to be 440 grams now most are only 400 grams yet we still pay the same price. Love the cartoon
Tony you would make a fortune if you could come up with a microscopic can opener.
Ice cream! I hadn’t got used to the smaller cartons yet and now they’re smaller again. Maybe the powers that be are trying to put us on a diet.
Some of us could us it.
Dude! It’s just ’cause everybody now goes to beartoons for infotainment! 🙂
Everybody…no…just about 20 of you.
I love the word “infotainment”.
I hate to say it, but I can’t remember the last time I read an actual newspaper. I google everything for free. It’s hard to compete with that.
I do miss the cartoons though. That’s why I come to Bearman as well as the other talented cartoonists I’m branching out to from Bearman.
Thanks Bearman. 🙂
That’s right…b/c only the best cartoonists make my blog roll (or at least the ones that have blog rolled me)
Pretty soon their going to have to offer magnifying glasses with the newspaper. The cartoons are the best part of the newspaper.
that’s how I learned to read.
Nothing beats reading the paper in bed on a Sunday morning…. well, almost nothing….
Nuff said. ha ha
Funny, but sad.
Somethings gotta be done. ’cause it just don’t feel right sitting on the throne with a laptop in the morning.
Maybe the Kindle will soon have an online newspaper.
Dude! TP printed with the daily news! Genius
I wondered if you could draw girls??? Nice toon.
Yes but they all look like men in drag.
Sounds like the wife in the morning – when she’s been too pissed to take her makeup off before going to bed
I have heard of too pissed to have sex but never too pissed to take off makeup. I am made at you so you have to go to bed with me without the horror of what I look like without makeup.
My wife forgets to take hers off some nights, so I wake up with a cross between The Crow and Ronald McDonald. Kinda hot sometimes.
I don’t know what the newspaper industry is gonna do, but they had better come up with a better solution than slashing jobs.
haha. see? this is why i never got into that newsy stuff.
of course, instead i decided to get into the banky stuff and lost my job anyway. Okay, i forgot where i was going with this.
Hey Brit, this isn’t your blog, please stay on topic..
The papers get smaller and the info less news worthy.
Nice one!
Less newsworthy means the paper can be smaller which means less news which means a smaller paper arrrrgh.
