    Yeezy Peasy

Editorial Cartoon by Bearman showing President Donald Trump angry at the possibility of losing the youth and African American vote to Biden so he calls Kanye West to run for President.

When President Donald Trump needs a plan sometimes it comes to him Yeezy Peasy.

Back in 2015 Kanye West stated at the MTV Music Awards that he would run for President of the United States in 2020. Five years later his good friend Donald Trump is President and the numbers don’t look so “bigly” for his reelection campaign. So how would you try to pull away votes from your opponent Joe Biden. Best thing to do is target those who overwhelmingly identify as Democrats (and wouldn’t be voting for Trump anyway) such as Millennials and African Americans by given them another option. Which led to this announcement from West this week:

Obviously Kanye is joking and isn’t running because IMO there is no way he can get enough boots on the ground to get on the ballot as a third party candidate (unless he plans only write-in). But conspiracy theorists are talking.

Bearman Cartoons Black Lives Matter Cartoon White Privilege

The term “Black Lives Matter” seems to strum up very emotional feelings lately with the demonstrations and unrest related to the death of George Floyd. Since 2013 it has been used as a rallying slogan and yet there are those who either don’t see or refuse to see the meaning behind it and limit their response to “All Lives Matter”. They do but as in the cartoon the phrase “Black Lives Matter” doesn’t mean only black lives matter or that black lives matter more. It is that black lives have to matter too!!

Now just some random thoughts on my take on current events:

    • When you ask someone to explain their worldview it doesn’t mean it is wrong because it doesn’t line up with your own narrative or experience. Open healthy dialogue is what is needed not bloviating why they are wrong.
    • Support the notion that Black Lives Matter does not at all mean that you or any other supporters are not supporters of the police. Yes the percentage of bad cops is small but why not create ways to either make them better cops or get them out of the way of the cops who are doing good? During the church scandal the number of priests who were doing bad things was very small but because the systems were in place not to proactively deal with the bad apples for way too long, the church and good priests are still trying to recover. Same with the police. I know very good police officers who want nothing to do with the negative things going on but the systems they are a part of don’t allow for pushing back to make other cops responsible.
    • If you believe in the concept that “All Lives Matter”, there has to be a recognition of police forces that things can and should be better. Better training to apprehend suspects and once in custody better training to reestablish the officers ability to back away from their emotions of the situation and ensure everyone is safe. And again looking at the systems in place. Whether we believe the other officers on hand at the scene should be responsible, what is it in the environment of that police force that kept them from speaking out against the actions of Derek Chauvin at the scene.
    • You can separate support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement from those groups/websites who have tried to organize under that banner who may have different motives.
    • Finally, white people who are out demonstrating should have respect but those out there looting and rioting are the epitome of White Privilege. Whether your actions are opportunistic or trying to incite others, you personally and you collectively won’t have the pay the consequences of continued racist beliefs and actions in this country.
  • Putin a Spy in the White House (Cartoon)

Putin a Spy in the White House (Cartoon)

Editorial Cartoon: Putin a Spy in the White House

So President Trump and President Putin met in Helsinki this past week.  The press questioned Putin as to whether there was dossier on President Trump that resulted in a  Kompromat.  (full transcript hereKompromat is a Russian term for any type of Compromising Materials on a Person.  Now neither President would confirm or fully deny it which led many on social media and the press to really wonder what Putin has on Trump which has led the President to lambaste our historic allies while at the same time cuddling up to the Russian Dictator President.

Interesting questions but former CIA operative Jack Devine has concluded that it is impossible for Donald Trump to be a spy simply because of his actions in Helsinki:

If Trump were truly serving as a Russian intelligence asset, there would have been an obvious move for him to make during his joint press conference with Putin. He would have publicly lambasted the Russian leader, unleashing as theatrical a denunciation as possible. He would have told Putin that he may have been able to get away with a lot of nonsense under Barack Obama, but all that would end now: America has a strong President and there will be no more meddling. Instead, Trump gave up his single best chance to permanently put to rest any suspicion that he is working to promote Russian interests.

So conspiracy theorists, what is your take?

It seems like the outing of the alleged sexual harassment from Harvey Weinstein towards many women has been the launch pad for women to feel empowered to speak out against the behavior.  For those who have been on the publicity apology tour I wonder what they are truly apologizing for, the harassment or the fact that they were outed.

Editorial Cartoon: Gun Control and North Korea

    10-6-17--Bearman-Cartoons-Gun-Control-North-Korea

Sorry it has been a while since my last cartoon, let alone editorial cartoon but something struck me the other day after the tragedy at Las Vegas with the push again for gun control.

I believe in the second amendment and I also believe, much like we do with other rights, there are limits and there are requirements.  As much as we talk about the 1st amendment, there are things you can’t say and platforms where your free speech is legally limited.

If I said I want to drive a tank around my neighborhood, would that be OK??  The NRA and gun advocates should be on the forefront to ensuring that guns are kept out of the hands of those who are most likely to use them in unintended ways.  Domestic violence record…no gun.  Mental instability…no gun until you can prove your stability.  Waiting periods and background checks should not be a hindrance.

Kim Jong Un of North Korea wishes he could have that much freedom (which of course he shouldn’t)

Bearman Cartoons Barron trump takes over Chief Strategist from Steve Bannon Editorial Cartoon

Barron Trump.  Seemingly the only Trump child President Donald Trump hasn’t had either run his companies or be a part of running the country.  Last week daughter Ivanka was named Assistant to the President.  Now with son-in-law Jared Kushner making a power play it seems for control of the President’s ear and agenda which could push White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon to the curb.  Just a small change to the letters on the door and Barron could be in by summer vacation.

  • The Boycott Culture – Is it hurting American Business?

The Boycott Culture – Is it hurting American Business?

    2-17-17-Bearman-Cartoons The Boycott Culture

Boycott Culture is alive and well in America.  I have no problems with a person choosing to boycott any business that they don’t agree with the practices thereof, however I do have a problem when you assume I should be boycotting the business as well or I am a bigot, racist, sexist, or any other form of -ist.

It used to be that boycotts were used as a means for cultural change.  Now it is used to act out personal grievances.  Dennis Wyatt states in a recent editorial: ” Instead of being well-thought-out and organized efforts such as lettuce and grape boycotts organized by real change agents such as Cesar Chavez, most of the ones popping up today are from folks acting on the spur of the moment hearing someone say something they don’t like.”

Because Uber CEO, Travis Kalani, was part of a Trump Advisory committee, people started demanding #deleteuber boycotts.  No one bothered to find out if Kalani was in full agreement with Trump or was trying to promote favor with the President.  No.  He had any kind of association with a President people don’t like so we should automatically boycott his company.  Now people are calling for boycotts of Tesla because Elon Musk hasn’t stepped down from the advisory board.  His response is one people should hear: “Activists should be pushing for more moderates to advise President, not fewer. How could having only extremists advise him possibly be good?”  Exactly.  If you make anyone who might be able to have a voice of reason advise the President too scared to try, all you will get is people who don’t care what you think and are to the extreme in their viewpoints.

You have people boycotting Norstrom because they stopped carrying Ivanka Trump’s line and people boycotting Bloomingdales because they still do.  You have artists who will boycott Israel (Roger Waters) declaring it is because of human rights issues but have no problem performing in Russia, China, or Saudi Arabia.

In the end it diminishes what a true boycott is and should be.  So for now, I am boycotting the boycotts.

  • Wasted Votes

    Wasted Votes

    Editorial Cartoons Wasted Vote

Wasted Vote for a third party or write-in candidate or spoiler for certain parties candidacies?  Everyone blames Ralph Nader for Gore losing the 2000 election but no one tends to bring up the fact that if it weren’t for Ross Perot, we probably would have had another Bush Sr. term.

Electorally it looks like Hillary Clinton should have a lock on the election.  But assuming it is close as it was in 2000 and a third party candidate should win just one state allowing for neither Clinton or Trump to reach 270 Electoral Votes.  Then it goes to congress to decide among the top THREE electoral vote getters.  Given the disdain for Trump and the fear Clinton could spell doom for the Democrats in 2020, Congress may want a third party to give them time to fix their own parties over the next four years.

    What say you?

    Trump blames Media

The crazier things that Donald Trump says and does the more he blames it on the media.  Or is he mad because the only way he can control his message anymore is to stop talking?  Does he forget that it is the same media that got him the nomination in the first place due to them constantly wanting to film the circus that seems to surround him?

  • Black Lives Matter

    Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter Editorial Cartoon Bearman Cartoons

“Black Lives Matter”  For whatever reason since the phrase was first invoked, there is a large population of people who miss the point and respond “All Lives Matter.”   What is missing from their understanding, IMO, is when someone invokes the phrase “Black Lives Matter” they aren’t saying ONLY black lives have meaning but rather “Black Lives Matter TOO”.  It is implied in the phrase and yet so many seem to miss the point.

Let’s say you are at a birthday party and everyone is served cake but you.  You say “I want cake!!”  First, you don’t have to say “I want cake too because clearly everyone else has cake.”  Second, imagine the response is “Everyone wants cake”.  Can you see how demeaning it is.  All your friends are standing around enjoying the delicious confection and have a blind spot to the fact that you have been left out.   But what is worse, is they shut you down when you bring up the injustice.

And just because you support the “Black Lives Matter” cause does NOT mean you are anti police.  As Trevor Noah of the Daily Show clearly points out in this video, you can be Pro Black and Pro Police….and should be.

    What do you think?
