  • Will the real Nate Fakes please stand up

Ladies and Gentlemen.  The man you see pictured above is Nate Fakes.  Mad Magazine and Break of Day cartoonist Nate Fakes.  And hands down, the worst person in the world for me to try to caricature.  If it is the first time or the 20th time trying I can usually get to some semblance of the person even if the end result isn’t flattering (sorry Myra).

But there is nothing distinguishing about this kid. Here are several of my failed attempts. The first being the one that probably looks most like him but the last being my favorite.

  • Redneck Toenail Dryer

Redneck Toenail DryerSo there IS a story behind this Nate Fakes original cartoon.  Nate Fakes of Mad Magazine, Break of Day and commenting here fame was having an ebay auction where the winner would get a custom cartoon created of anything they wanted.

Well timing was good because I just had a cartoon worthy experience with the lovely wife.  My wife had just got back from a pedicure to scrub all the debris and fungus off her feet (just kidding honey – not that she reads my blog anyway) and went to get dressed for dinner with our friends.  She came downstairs looking beautiful in her black dress and yet was complaining that due to the humidity her toenails wouldn’t dry.

The next thing I know this person, who hates the cold and keeps our house in the mid 70’s in the winter, was sitting on the kitchen floor for 10 minutes with her feet in the freezer!  After five minutes, I snapped a picture that subsequently made the rounds with all our friends and family.   Thankfully she puts up with me.

But of course, I couldn’t let it end there.  When I saw Nate’s plea for bids I jumped at the chance to have it immortalized in cartoon form.  And this is the result.

Nate is doing another auction this week for a custom cartoon so go check it out and follow Break of Day on Facebook to keep updated on new cartoons and future auctions.

  • Guest Cartoon: Nate Fakes

    Guest Cartoon: Nate Fakes

Today’s guest cartoon comes from the one and only Nate Fakes of Break of Day Comic (please forgive him that he decided to post his comic on go comics which always tries to do pop ups) and of Nate’s Ramblings.

Now I asked Nate where he got the notion that Bearman had so much gray hair and his reply was that he blew up my avatar and my shading looked like it was actually gray hair.  This looks like a normal weekend in my neighborhood though.

BTW, if you love Break of Day but don’t want to “subscribe” to comment, do what I do and follow Break of Day on Facebook and comment there.

    Thanks Nate!

  • Movie Poster – Nate Fakes of Knocking on Heavens Door

Knocking on Heavens Door Spoof Poster of the Doors Movie for beartoons.com

Long time Beartoons supporter Nate Fakes came up with this Doors Spoof Poster for his comic Knocking On Heavens Door.   He along with comedian Tommy Blaze put out the sweetest webcomic you will ever come across (the complete opposite of what goes on here).

The cartoon centers on Spencer, a six year old, and his family.  Spencers best friend is either God or he has an overactive imagination.  The artists leave it up to you to decide.

BTW…want to compare Nate’s rendition to the real poster.  Click here for the original Doors Poster.

Check back on Tuesday for Roland Perez of Metal Jaw Comics

  • Guest Cartoon – Knocking On Heavens Door

Head over to Nate Fakes webcomic Knocking on Heavens Door. Yours truly is todays guest cartoonist!!!

  • Other Contests Around the Web

As well as my own Editorial Cartoon Caption Contest (still time to enter), there are several friends around the net that are also doing contests.

Jill at Elemental My Dear is holding a contest all month long encouraging readers to use to their own blog to “submit a post that reflects the saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers” in any format you may like such as…photography, poetry, short story, cartoon, etc.”  She will link to your posting and give away 3 5×7 photos.

Ken at Rick the Stick is encouraging readers to come up with creative ways to promote his webcomic.  I tried my hand at a theme song for Ken (we’ll have to wait and see if Ken ever lets it make the light of day as I need Britney Spears engineer to make me sound good).   Contest goes through the 25th of this month and the winner will be tooned as a guest star in the strip.

Samantha of Life’s a Witch is having a one week contest to win copies of her comic collections.  Every tweet or comment on her site will earn you easy entries.

Finally, not a contest but Nate is looking for guest cartoonists to take on his adorable characters from Knocking on Heavens Door as Fan Art.  I have to clean up my act before I can figure out what to submit.

  • The Frustrated Cartoonist – At 100

Our final selection is from Nate Fakes.  He draws, might draw, used to draw the Frustrated Cartoonist.  Hell, I don’t know.  You see Nate has hit the big time with Mad Magazine as well and will have a recurring strip going forward.  He swears that doesn’t mean the end of his Frustrated Cartoonist character Jim, but given how he drew him at 100, I think it might be a sign.

The Frustrated Cartoonist is Jim who longs to be like Nate and actually get paid to do his craft.  Yet like all of us frustrated cartoonists, he has to manage a day job to pay the bills.  That and his girlfriend and neighbors seem to cut into actual cartooning time.  Anyone who has ever had a hobby that they eventually wanted to become a career will relate.

So I give you the slow progression of age of Jim.

    Aging Jim

So thanks Nate and thanks to all the great cartoonists for helping me out.  I look forward to reading all the comments.

Follow Nate on Twitter so you can keep up with all he is doing.

And follow me on Twitter too.  I should finally be posting again sometime this week.

  • Guest Cartoon: Frustrated Cartoonist

While you are anxiously awaiting Thursday…check out Nate Fakes site.  I did a guest cartoon because I knew this was going to be a busy week for him.  Recovering from a turning 30 hangover can take a while.
