Will the real Nate Fakes please stand up

Ladies and Gentlemen.  The man you see pictured above is Nate Fakes.  Mad Magazine and Break of Day cartoonist Nate Fakes.  And hands down, the worst person in the world for me to try to caricature.  If it is the first time or the 20th time trying I can usually get to some semblance of the person even if the end result isn’t flattering (sorry Myra).

But there is nothing distinguishing about this kid. Here are several of my failed attempts. The first being the one that probably looks most like him but the last being my favorite.

  1. Nate Fakes says:

Bearman, this isn’t a caricature fail! Whatever. I love em’! They’re actually quite flattering (considering I’m not cussing out my drawing table or something and SMILING when drawing…whew…that rarely happens). Thank you, sir! I will be passing these around for sure.

  2. Comedy Plus says:

You’re being way too hard on yourself. I think all three are awesome. I can see the resemblance.

    Have a great day. 🙂

  3. nursemyra says:

I like the second one best

  4. chris says:

My fails make your fails looks good. 🙂

    • Bearman says:

No way. But it does remind me of a joke.

Best way to lose weight isn’t to diet..it is to hang out with fat people. You don’t lose any weight but you look skinny compared to your friends. Sadly in cartooning, I am the “fat” kid.

  5. Kimberly says:

If you took a little of each feature off each picture, you will nail his “look” These are really good though!! You have captured his nose quite well! 😉

  6. Colleen says:

If the first one and the second one got together and had a baby it might resemble him more than either of the parents. 🙂 but that would be kind of weird.

  7. George says:

I think the third one captures Nate the best.

It’s hard to characterize someone if there’s no truly discernible features. Or if you don’t wanna expose those features by drawin’ ’em.

Plus, Nate doesn’t rock a unique, out-of-the-norm hairstyle or have facial hair or features that you can latch onto.

All in all, I think you did as good as you possibly could have, and that’s still lots better than the rest of us could accomplish.

  8. Friggin Loon says:

Sheez Bearman, the first one looks like it could be a Mad Magazine toon.

  9. Binky says:

I like the second one best. Gut you should have added the red devil eyes.

  10. Deb Adams says:

Whoa! Go easy on yourself. All 3 of these drawings are great!
    Deb xx

  11. Who knew Nate had TWO twin brothers?!
    🙂

  12. I like the first one the best. It looks like a cross between Nate and Alfred E. Newmann… sorry Nate!

  13. Scholar Mel says:

The last one almost looks like my caricature brother. 🙂

  14. planetross says:

    Good job!
I think the first one resembles him the most.
The nose in the third one reminds me of Nixon. … Richard Milhous not Mojo.

  15. Tony McGurk says:

I think all 3 are great but like you the 3rd is my favourite

  16. MC/Curtis says:

I like the third one and it also shows his gravatar. It also displays the most Bearman style. I’m going to head over to his website and see what he’s doing.

  17. i like the first one the best. They are all good tries though.

  18. Tom Falco says:

The last is my fav. too.

  19. Mark Stokes says:

The third is the charm, Bearman. One thing I’ll point out, in that one you made his ears much bigger and his face fuller, closer to the real Nate Fakes. Might I make a suggestion? Nate’s neck is thick, this guy is definitely no pencil neck! Looks good, though just as it is!

  20. Jenn says:

Heh, I’d have to say to go with the third one! It’s the most different out of the three you’ve done and still resembles him (IMO). Great versions all in all!

  21. Hjörtur says:

I see no fail! Well done!
