  • Guest Cartoon: Jande Rowe

Guest Cartoon Jande Rowe for Beartoons.com

Today’s guest cartoon submission is from Jande Rowe of e-Orbits Comix (home of Aedre’s Firefly).  Jande’s line work is amazing on AF but what I enjoy just as much is her personal stories that tend to accompany each post.

Now my only complaint is that she assumes I have any weight to actually take off.  I do, but the presumption of it bothers me. haha.  Now on the other hand she obviously drew me with killer abs.  So all is forgiven.

Make sure to check out Jande’s work and also follow her on twitter @eccentricorbits

  • Editorial Cartoon: Credit Card ID

    Editorial Cartoon: Credit Card Identification

First of all, let me give credit to all you who do recurring characters and multipanels.  This took much longer to do than I anticipated.

Has anyone else had this conversation with a sales person?  I know everytime I have asked the same question, this is the response I get.  My signature has worn off my credit card due to overuse so I am asked for a photo ID frequently.

Their response to why they need it never made sense to me as the last panel illustrates.  And guess what, they are wrong.

According to several sources (see Kiplingers, Consumerist), the reason they ask for a photo ID is because your credit card is not valid unless it is signed.  So the merchant is supposed to compare the signature on your license with the signature on their copy of the receipt.  HOWEVER, they never do that.  They always compare the name (not the signature) on the credit card with the name on the Photo ID.

Personally I would be happy if all merchants required photo id and matched the credit card against the ID.  However, funny enough Visa and Mastercard discourage merchants from doing so by saying a Photo ID is not a requirement for purchase as long as the card was signed.

Sadly, with online purchasing, self-service checkout and even digital signature pads (does anyone’s signature look remotely like their real one on those things), the chances for someone illegally using your credit card is rising.  The good news is you are typically only on the hook for at most $50 assuming you report the fraudulent charges in a timely manner.

    Thoughts?

  • Editorial Cartoon: Obama and Clinton

Editorial Cartoon: Obama and Chelsea Clinton

I know I don’t post editorial cartoons typically on Friday but this was so timely (thanks Mike) that I couldn’t pass it up before it became old news or someone else shamelessly stole my idea.

So it seem President Obama has been getting some slack for passing off his press briefings to the Clintons.  Last week it was Bill when discussing the reasons he negotiated the tax cut deal with the Republicans.  And this week he passed off questions on Afghanistan to Hillary.

I’m all for delegation but he seems to be running out of Clinton options.

  • Editorial Cartoon: Obama isn’t Muslim

Editorial Cartoon: Obama is not Muslim

I rarely have a cartoon on the back burner but this one I originally drew two weeks ago when a poll was released that now 18% of Americans believe that President Barack Obama is Muslim versus his self-professed Christianity.

The absurdity of this pushed me to draw the above as it is like saying anyone that is circumcised is Jewish.

(My wife got the joke immediately but then wondered if some might take offense as if I was implying that Jewish men may not be endowed.  I told her I hadn’t heard that stereotype and besides aren’t there many Jewish men in porn including  including Seymour Butts and Ron Jeremy?)

I alluded to the Twitter #tuesdaysketch in my last post.  This was one I did a few months ago.  The subject was simply “frogs”

  • Editorial Cartoon – Healthcare Costs

If Buying Healtcare were like Buying a diamond

So the Healthcare Reform Bill was passed into law today.   Now as Nancy Pelosi said we will finally figure out what was in it.  But I wonder while everyone will now be insurable will it do anything to really lower the cost of healthcare.  And do we as Americans really care?

I put myself in this camp.  If I had a shoulder problem and the doctor suggested a $500+ MRI, I would make a different decision if I was footing the entire bill.  But with insurance, it is a no brainer to pay the $25 copay to get the MRI.

It used to be I would pay my copay to the dentist, he would submit the claim to insurance and they would only pay their negotiated rate.  Well the dentist got wise to that and now he requires I pay the entire bill upfront.  He still submits the claim to insurance but now they send their negotiated rate check to me.  So he gets what he asks for and I get stuck with the leftovers.  All of the sudden I started making different choices for my dental care including asking how much the insurance company would cover for procedures beyond cleaning.   If I feel insurance doesn’t cover enough, I will look at different options including other dentists.

We all want the sports car but only want to pay for the smart car.

  • Merry Christmas

    Merry Christmas

First off, I want to say Congratulations to Danica for winning the Editorial cartoon caption contest.  Danica email me (see email address above in the header) and let me know if you want something from WackSack.com or the signed artwork.  Here is the winning entry.

Secondly, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.  I know we don’t all celebrate it but in the spirit of the day, I want to give thanks to all of you who have supported me over the last year.

I have said over and over, that it is great to have people follow you on tweets and yes I get excited when my website gets a new high in visitors.  But to me the greatest value I get out of doing this is the interaction that each of you give.  Putting up with my haphazard postings and times away due to work or because I am hauling my fat ass to the gym, you continue to come back.  Hopefully I was able to show the same courtesy to all of my frequent commenters.

It can take me an hour to get through all your posts in a day at times (an hour that I could have been drawing a new cartoon) but I think visiting and supporting you as well is just as important as me getting up a new MARGE SIMPSON NAKED image (sorry couldn’t resist getting some hits from the toon porn freaks).

The only thing that could make things better is if next year, you bring a friend and I double the number of commenters.  Crap, then I’ll never have time to respond.  Hope everyone has a safe holiday and an even better 2010.

    Looking forward to it.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Brian Kelly to Notre Dame

So it looks as if University of Cincinnati Football Coach Brian Kelly is off to Notre Dame to be the head coach there.  For my overseas friends, that is American Football not Soccer.

University of Cincinnati Football fans are in an uproar both at him leaving and what they consider his “lies” along the way.  I am sure if he told his players he was considering leaving that would have been great motivation going into the Pitt game. I say quit complaining.  If you were a 2-10 team, no one would care that he is leaving.  If not for him you wouldn’t be playing in a BCS bowl in the first place, so enjoy it.

Oh yeah and he will probably double his salary too…so who can blame him for that move either?

  • SFTH: Aussie Undies

Thought I would start a new periodic feature to supplement the traditional Bearman Cartoons.  SFTH or Straight From the Headlines will have me perusing local newspapers from around the globe and posting that which I find interesting or humorous.

Given that I am more popular in Australia than America, my first stop was the Australian papers.  I was going to do something on the Prime Minister being “soft” on immigration violations, but then this article about Aussie men and their underwear habits caught my eye.  (The Friggin Loon also picked up on this story.  I think because she has a google alert on “men’s undies”.)

Australian men were surveyed and half stated that they wait 2 or 3 days (which means 3-7 days) before changing their underwear for a fresh pair.   If that wasn’t funny enough, I went on to read this blurb:

Adelaide stylist Filip Odzak said men should pick flattering and attractive undies over name brands. “What every man needs for the best result is a pair of basic black jocks or jock briefs – they always look great,” he said.

This got me thinking.  Do Australian men all look like Hugh Jackman?  Nope.  Seems over 60% of Aussie men just like their chubby American cousins are overweight or Obese.  So black jocks on heavy men?   I know I long ago switched to boxer-briefs.  It is very slimming.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Rabbi Shmuley Boteach New Celebrity Spiritualist

The Beatles started it all when turning to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi for spiritual advice. Then came the Dalai Lama. Next was Scientology and Kabbalah. Now it seems when celebrities find themselves in a moral dilemma (or a rather a publicity crisis) the man to turn to is Kosher Sex author, Rabbi Shmuley Boteach.

Obviously Michael Jackson and now Jon Gosselin are his higher profile devotees but what other celebs have/will turn to the Rabbi to right their moral compass.
