  • Editorial Cartoon: Ron Paul Social Security Hypocrite

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest continues and I made it to week THREE!  Thanks to all for voting.  Click the image above or here to go to the voting.  You should do a search of “Bearman” and my cartoon will come up front and center and then vote.  Some people were clicking the link and then accidentally voting on the first thing that popped up.  Unfortunately no way to direct link to my cartoon.  Again, as long as I stay in the contest, there will be two editorial cartoons a week to vote on – Mondays and Thursdays.   Oh and you can vote multiple times in each round if you want (resets every six hours) until EOD  Tuesday.

    ___________________________________________________________________________

So Doctor, Senator and Presidential Candidate Ron Paul was in the news last week about his seemingly hypocritical stance on Social Security (see article).   Seems with one breath he states that Social Security is Unconstitutional but with the other admits that he accepts Social Security.

In the editorial cartoon I used “Hypocritic Oath” instead of “Hippocratic Oath” (pledge of doctors).  See what I did there?  Pretty clever huh?

I am torn though.  One one hand, he did pay into the system so he has the right to get paybacks.  YET, he makes the claim that he puts it in the same category as roads  where he has paid into them so he should enjoy the benefits thereof.   It would be very difficult to NOT drive on government roads.  It would be very easy to take a stand and not cash your Social Security check or at the least protest by donating the checks.   Thoughts?

  • Editorial Cartoon: Facepalm – Facebook goes Public

    Editorial-Cartoon Mark Zuckerberg Facebook Facepalm

I actually previewed this editorial cartoon on Google Plus on Friday.  It was well received due to the timing and my predictive nature on Thursday night when I drew this that the Facebook IPO would be less than stellar.   Poor Mark Zuckerberg has to do a facepalm instead of promoting his facebook.  Though none of us should feel sorry for them as all the pre IPO stock holders will cash out for bookoo bucks.   Besides Mark got to marry his college sweetheart over the weekend and since he knew her before he was rich, you know she wasn’t in it for the money.  Congrats to the couple.

    Charity Challenge Update

    Week 3 Breakdown:

$10 for Using ME in their Cartoon –

$1 for ever new follower on Google Plus at http://googleplus.beartoons.com

584 NEW FOLLOWERS in a week.

Which puts us way the hell over my goal of $1000 to those charities.  Thank you thank you.  I maxed out for the first time in 4 years.  However…

I know there are a couple cartoonists who expressed interest in still doing a Bearman Cameo this month so for anyone else that does, I will donate the $10 to Crayons to Computers.  Also there is still time to donate to Crayons to Computers in honor of Bearman Cartoons.  Remember I will match those donations.

  • Conservatives and Romney

    Editorial Cartoons: Conservatives and Romney

With today’s editorial cartoon, I have no doubts that a conservative would never vote for Obama to spite Romney.  However it is true that many conservative groups are calling on him to move to the right or lose their support.  So isn’t that really the same thing?  Tony Perkins (no not the actor), of the conservative group Family Research Council said this:  “And so if the party is moving in a different direction, we are not going there.  The only reason there was an alignment with Rick Santorum from our constituency is because Rick embraced the ideas, the policies and the principles that our organization and our constituency believes in…If they don’t, they’re not going to get the unbridled enthusiastic support that Rick Santorum enjoys.

So maybe they don’t vote for Obama but more likely just don’t vote.  If you have choice between supporting a guy who agrees with 50% of your beliefs versus one that supports 0% (obvious exaggeration), wouldn’t the logical thing to do is try to get something out of it?  Or do you enjoy bitching about the country for another 4 years?  I guess I will never understand the mindset of the far left/right.

On a different but not necessarily lighter note, I did a caricature tribute to Dick Clark this week.  New Years Eve won’t be the same without you (and please no Mayan jokes…I have heard them in every form the last week. haha)

  • Tori Spelling Caricature

The Friggin Loon and BSchooled both are tired of my WWE Wrestling Caricatures so they put in a request for a Tori Spelling one.  Here you go ladies.

I won’t be around much for the next week after today so I’ll miss commenting elsewhere and probably here too.  Try to behave without me.

  • John Cena Sign Fruity Pebbles

Let’s see if WWE Wrestling fans start trying to redraw my John Cena caricature on signs all over WWE live events as they have my Sheamus sign.  All I ask is that you make sure my URL is front and center.

For you non wrestling fans, John Cena is in a feud as of late with former WWE wrestler and now movie star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  The Rock made fun of the fact that each year Cena has a different brightly colored shirt that he hocks to his fans.  Thus started an entire Fruity Pebbles chant. Lo and behold, Post cereal took full advantage of the publicity and quickly signed the popular Cena to an endorsement deal, even putting his face on a box of Fruity Pebbles.

Oh and don’t forget to check out my guest cartoon I did at Short Attention Span comic.

  • What is Your Porn Star Name?

I’ve seen some things floating around the web describing the steps for people to figure out their Blues Singer name.   We never played that game but we did ask people their Porn Star Name.   Plus when else am I going to be able to fit a caricature of Adult Film star legend Ron Jeremy into a cartoon post.  So fess up Bearmaniacs….what is yours?

Oh and someone pointed out that this might be security answers on websites and you may  so your alternative is to tell us your Middle Name and the First Car you Drove.

    UPDATE:

The guys at Obscure Gentlemen webcomic actually cared what I have to say.  Go check out my interview with them.  Aidan, George and Tony better go because I give you shout outs.

  • Editorial Cartoon: Caricature Fail

Editorial Cartoon: Life of a Caricature Artist

This cartoon was inspired by my attempts over the last 4 months to do more caricature work.  If you get a caricature done by me or someone else there are several reactions you may have.

    1. Wow that picture is great and it looks like me.
    2. Wow that picture is great but I am not sure it looks like me.
    3. That picture isn’t good/flattering but it does look like me
    4. That picture sucks and it doesn’t look anything like me.

I have run the gamut of reactions to my own work, though I have only had one person actually tell me number four (yet more probably felt that way).  I had my wife, and biggest critic, look over the work and she said “Yeah it looks like her, she just isn’t that attractive.”  I find that women are way more sensitive to you pointing out prominent characteristics in caricature.  I tend to go more realistic versus cartoony as I do with men.

A piece of advice I got from Jerry Dowling, former Cincinnati Enquirer editorial cartoonist and caricature artist, is that you should over emphasize the size of women’s eyes…they seem to like that.  He may or may not have said something about boob size too, I can’t remember.

He related a story of live drawing a caricature of a woman as her husband was looking over his shoulder.  Suddenly, her husband, who obviously thought the drawing wasn’t pretty enough, said “Don’t you know she is a former Beauty Queen.”  To which Jerry handed him his pen and said “Great, so you finish up the drawing”

  • Joel Poirier takes on Bearman

Joel Poirier does a caricature of Bearman Cartoons

This incredible version of the BEARMAN is compliments of Joel Poirier, cartoonist extraordinairre, and creator of Stripped Comics (don’t get any ideas, it is not porn – it’s about Superheroes.)

I have been doing some caricatures on Google Plus that I call “muggings”.  You can check out some I have done here.  Joel thought I should get a taste of my own medicine and drew this up for me.  Love it!!

Make sure to check out Joel and follow him on Google Plus or Facebook

    UPDATE

Ryan Klassen of City Folk the Webcomic wanted to join the party too so he did a mash up of Steve Buscemi and Bearman.

Find him on Google Plus too.

  • Will the real Nate Fakes please stand up

Ladies and Gentlemen.  The man you see pictured above is Nate Fakes.  Mad Magazine and Break of Day cartoonist Nate Fakes.  And hands down, the worst person in the world for me to try to caricature.  If it is the first time or the 20th time trying I can usually get to some semblance of the person even if the end result isn’t flattering (sorry Myra).

But there is nothing distinguishing about this kid. Here are several of my failed attempts. The first being the one that probably looks most like him but the last being my favorite.

  • Mad Art of Caricature and Made for Art

So I was excited to get the mail this week and find my ordered copy of Tom Richmond’s The Mad Art of Caricature.   For the uninformed, Tom is one of the regular artists for Mad Magazine along with a host of other projects.  Pretty much most of the movie/tv spoofs of the last 10 years has been his work.  He also hosts a blog and has been an invaluable resource on copyright and caricatures.

    Here is my signed copy.

On this blog post you can see Tom actually drawing the Alfred E Neuman to ship to me (ok maybe it wasn’t mine but it looks like it COULD be).

The book looks amazing and I can’t wait to dig in and find out all the things I have been screwing up in my own caricatures.  But Tom, I think your foreign printer messed up a little with this insert.  I can’t find this book or this author online..haha

On a separate note, I want to give a shout out to a Google Plus friend who has been very supportive over there.  Artist Eric Johnson has created a new site called Made for Art .   This is how he describes the site:

If you enjoy browsing interesting, creative sites showcasing the talents of interesting, creative people, you should check out my new site. Whether its art, poetry, webcomics, ebooks, sculpture, photography, crafts or hobbies, etc., let MADE FOR ART be your link to Creative Minds .   And if you are a Creative Mind and would like to share your work and links on this unique, up and comings site, just let me know you’d like to be added to the MADE FOR ART circle!

Head over there as he has featured my work and if you want Eric to include you in the future reach out and support him.
