So I was excited to get the mail this week and find my ordered copy of Tom Richmond’s The Mad Art of Caricature. For the uninformed, Tom is one of the regular artists for Mad Magazine along with a host of other projects. Pretty much most of the movie/tv spoofs of the last 10 years has been his work. He also hosts a blog and has been an invaluable resource on copyright and caricatures.
Here is my signed copy.
On this blog post you can see Tom actually drawing the Alfred E Neuman to ship to me (ok maybe it wasn’t mine but it looks like it COULD be).
The book looks amazing and I can’t wait to dig in and find out all the things I have been screwing up in my own caricatures. But Tom, I think your foreign printer messed up a little with this insert. I can’t find this book or this author online..haha
On a separate note, I want to give a shout out to a Google Plus friend who has been very supportive over there. Artist Eric Johnson has created a new site called Made for Art . This is how he describes the site:
If you enjoy browsing interesting, creative sites showcasing the talents of interesting, creative people, you should check out my new site. Whether its art, poetry, webcomics, ebooks, sculpture, photography, crafts or hobbies, etc., let MADE FOR ART be your link to Creative Minds . And if you are a Creative Mind and would like to share your work and links on this unique, up and comings site, just let me know you’d like to be added to the MADE FOR ART circle!
Head over there as he has featured my work and if you want Eric to include you in the future reach out and support him.
MADE FOR ART rules! We were lucky that Eric Johnson sent us an email after we gave G+ the laugh. We wanted to ask him if he played guitar, but we figured he was sick of being asked that.
The book looks cool too. I always thought the movie spoofs looked amazing even if I didn’t personally think they were ever funny. I liked the tiny little margin comics best.
I have no idea who Eric Johnson the guitar player is…even after I looked him up.
I’m not a fan, but he is famous. Not as bad as sharing a name with Michael Bolton or Theodore Bundy though.
Though being Michael Bolton might get you a better table a restaurant
Congrats! I expect a substantial exponential improvement in your artwork from now on.
I Love the “Hay Yamistit, Jr.” I guess that’s why you couldn’t find it anywhere…
Don’t count on it.
Yamistit? Your eyes are still off. haha
Well. joking aside you are correct. My eyes are still off (and somewhat painful at times). So I had another look and zoomed in on it and it’s “by Hay Yamistem,Jr.” (Hey! Ya Missed ’em, Junior!)
Sorry to hear that. Anything more they can do or is it time that will heal all wounds hopefully?
I especially like the Clint Eastwood & Michael Jackson on the cover.
He constantly is updating his blog with new celeb caricatures.
surely Hay Yamistem Jr is a joke?
I think it was a place holder as a template and they forgot to change it to the name of his book.
How cool and what a great shout out you did for these artists too.
Have a terrific day. 🙂
Thanks Sandee!!
“If you enjoy browsing interesting, creative sites showcasing the talents of interesting, creative people. . .”
Actually, I find interesting, creative people rather full of themselves. I much prefer the company here.
haha.. that is good. We only like to take our creativity and our pompous attitude just so far here.
Do we know any creative and interesting people?
No…so we stick together
I love the Clint Eastwood drawing.
Very cool.
I think I contributed to your practice of this art form. So we should expect more caricatures?
Do you want more caricatures of my quality?
but you will be practicing more I’m sure they will improve.
haha
good stuff 😀 don’t think i’ll be able to draw like that ever in my lifetime O__O
I won’t..haha
Whoops, I was so riveted I forgot to come back and comment 🙂
Geez…thanks
I hope you put a bandage on that.
Congrats! Can’t wait to see the results 😀
Results may vary.
Alfred E. Neuman is a classic. I should have kept up my Mad Magazine collection: I think I made it to issue #200 before National Lampoon stole me away.
I was addicted to Crack…wait that didn’t come out right.
Wasn’t there anothe magazine called “Crazy” … around for a short while?
I think there was…
There was “MAD” the original one followed by “SICK” and there was “Cracked”. I don’t remember a “Crazy”.
That is really cool,. my Brother would love to get one of those signed by Richmond, he has been a fan for years.
Well now he can….it will just cost him. Christmas present???
That would be a great thing to get him for Christmas, great idea thanks! The cost isn’t bad either.
Tom is awesome. I’ve got a caricature in his “ME Gallery”, which you can find on his website (yeah, I’m bragging, but it’s the closest I’m ever going to get to MAD, so let me have that!).

Incidentally, thanks for posting this! I ordered a copy right after I read it.
That is great.. Love the caricature. Not only can you draw feet, you can draw feet drawing.
Tom Richmond has been my favorite MAD artist since Mort Drucker took time off. Tom is amazing, and with computer coloring, his stuff looks so realistically cartoony.
Yeah, that’s a word-phrase.
But don’t look it up.
BRB…looking up “Word-phrase”
What the hell is a word-phrase
Sweet!
Order now…he only has 5000
Glad to see you are still trying to learn…even though I think you are pretty good already. We never get to old to learn. The more you learn…the more I can learn from you.
I have been thinking about doing some tutorials of my limited stuff. Just need a good web capture software that doesn’t break the bank.
Tom’s an amazing guy. I’m so jealous of his caricatures! Mine look like a 3rd graders compared to his. But yes, I am going to be ordering his book as soon as I can.
I thought you were a third grader.
Thanks for the kind words about the book. I actually only got 3,000 copies printed, and every copy sold gives me a little more of my living room back.
“”How to Draw Charicatoors” by Hay Yamistem Jr.” isn’t a mistake. The joke is that is you DIDN’T like the book, that’s the name of the book you should mention in your negative review.
See and there I thought it was a misprint. haha
Your jokes are too intelligent for this crowd (me included).
Now you need to post a dummy web page with that book.
Yep, that stuff is definitely awesome. I can draw okay with a pencil, but I’ve never been able to do caricatures. In fact, I can’t identify the people I draw at all. I mean, sure, they’re people, but WHO? I have no fricken idea. If I ever see on of them though, I’ll have to try and sell them a caricature.
I should go into that business. Just draw a bunch of random faces and whip out a pocket printer when I see someone that resembles what I have done.
So very cool, Bearman! And, Wow…Tom even popped in to say hello. I am impressed.
Will and Jay have discovered MAD on Cartoon Network. I overhear them in the living room, laughing like a couple of idiots. It warms my heart.
Cartoon network…buy them to magazine so at least they have to read.
Someone’s in the naughty corner AGAIN!!!! Blahahahaaha, those marsupials!!!!
Yeah, but Bearman keeps escaping to his own hidey-hole over here. Does Bearman hibernate for the winter?
Oh geez…I can’t keep up with my bad behavior in more than one place.
So COOL!!! I’m heading over there right now! Man! I am so jealous of you! 🙂
So cool. I need to get this book too.
I’ve always suspected Alfred would look good with green hair.
🙂
