Why Google Plus is better than….

Why Google Plus is better than Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and Digg

So it is no secret that I have been somewhat neglecting my friends on facebook, twitter, etc because my time on social media has been taken up by Google Plus.ย  While it of course has some limitations I wish they would work out sooner rather than later, the above cartoon pretty much sums up why it is better IMO than other social media.

As always let me know if you need an invite.ย  And for people who have recently joined who are lost, ahem Bo Lumpkin, a fellow cartoonist Debbie Ohi has created a nice page with links to help get you started.ย  You can find it here.

Ok. I’m prett much caught up on mot of my comic-making so now I have a little time to go investigate this Google Plus thinamajig. I hope it’s not to convoluted or complicated. I hate starting stuff over again and rebuilding networks.

Love the cartoon. It really helped convince me to give it a shot. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Bo Lumpkim Avatar

Thanks Bearman. If it weren’t for you I would still be postin’ my stuff on the Bo Lumpkin site and just wonderin’ if anyone ever read them. Going to the site to learn more now. Again… Thanks.

    2. Bearman Avatar

Look me up when you get there George.

Bo, the key is to put something in your “about” page and put up a couple posts so when you start following them they look back at your page and know it is a real person so they’ll follow you back.

I am finding G+ to be a great place for discovering artists and asking questions. You also don’t seem to miss as much if you aren’t around for a few hours… much easier to catch up!

    1. Bearman Avatar

I never could follow a conversation on twitter. So much easier on g+

  3. Tom Falco Avatar

I still can’t figure out Google plus. I have two accounts on hold, pending the day I have the patience to delve in and figure it out.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Go to the link above. It has helped me a lot

  4. Brad Avatar

There is a much friendlier vibe to Google +, it’s true. At least that’s true as of right now.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Well it was until you got there. Haha j/k

Love Gplus. My only concern is the names policy. But, the pros far outweigh the cons.

    1. Bearman Avatar

For all the good I talk about it there may be a day I am booted

  6. Bo Lumpkim Avatar

BTW Great comic. You nailed it. I checked out that site and I think it will be a lot of help. I hope to get a chance to look at it this week while I have the internet available.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Great. Make sure you use a browser other than explorer. For some reason notifications don’t show up to let you know if someone added you or responded.

  7. Duncanr Avatar

Great toon, Bearman – especially liked the dig at Digg !

    ๐Ÿ˜†

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks dunc. I never got any response on digg to anything

      1. Tony McGurk Avatar

Me neither. I get heaps of visits from Reddit though.

        1. Bearman Avatar

Me too but still a ton of downvotes.

  8. MC/Curtis Avatar

I could use an invite Bearman and thanks for offering. I’m not a social networker (or a social person) but I’ll try it for the sake of ButterSword. I bookmarked the tutorial because I’m a computer bozo so thanks for that link as well.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Sent you invite. Look me up when you get there

      1. MC/Curtis Avatar

Thanks Bearman! I think I circled you or something. Let me know if you need more invites and you can have some of mine. I don’t even know 150 people.

        1. Bearman Avatar

Me either. I have 148 left.

          1. Midtoon Avatar

Did you just post a big fat green-haired lie? You must have used most of your invites by now, unless we are back in high school and the cool kid gets more invites than me…

Anyway, I got my invite from you, so thanks!

          2. Bearman Avatar

Nope…when I first got on there wasn’t a limit. Now there is but as long as someone accepts your invite they don’t charge it against you. So bleah!

Today is that day. Tons of photogs on there

      1. SpilledInkGuy Avatar

But… I was waiting for someone to launch a networking site for amateur hacks…
        ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. Bearman Avatar

          That is beartoons.com

          1. SpilledInkGuy Avatar

Nothing wrong with the main content.
I do see a questionable banner on your sidebar, though.

I’m in the maybe (not) camp too. I’ve bookmarked Debbie’s page in case I change my mind

      1. Bearman Avatar

Let me know if you do. Not for everyone.

  11. Tony McGurk Avatar

I signed up from the invite you sent me but after a while couldn’t be bothered with it so I deleted. After doing my comics, replying to comments & keeping up with all the people’s sites in my RSS Reader I simply don’t have the time for social networks. They just don’t really interest me that much either. Your cartoon portrays it well.

    1. Bearman Avatar

It definitely can suck you in. Sometimes I forget to comment on my own site.

  12. Nate Fakes Avatar

I guess I’ll have to check out Google Plus. As of now, I like Facebook. I don’t touch Twitter, because my Break of Day post automatically to Twitter – taking care of all my updates. Reddit, Stumble Upon and other like it, I feel really didn’t do much but sometimes bring in people – but rarely did they come back, and I still haven’t figured out how to be popular on it. What it boils down to is I actually use Facebook for people I know, Break of Day fan page and Twitter for promotions. With my big launch tomorrow, I’m trying to drive traffic to Break of Day at GoComics, so I need to brush up on Google +. (Wow….this was a long comment for me!)

    1. Bearman Avatar

It is interesting. I have a new set of people who comment on my stuff strictly on G+ who don’t comment here. Kind of like I comment on your facebook stream and not on your site directly because I can’t be bothered with yet another password to remember.

      1. Nate Fakes Avatar

It’s that way for me to. Facebook rarely gets comments, GoComics get a handful…we’ll see what happens with the website and the new launch (yes, you secretly discovered I have – yet again – a new website for BOD).

        1. Bearman Avatar

I didn’t discover it. I just never erased it from my rss reader

  13. Mort J. Moose Avatar

Good thing I just signed up for google plus, I’d hate to end up like the dig guy.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Mort J Moose. Another great cartoon I wouldn’t have found without G+

  14. Mark Stokes Avatar

As a dabbler in all of the above except Google+, I have to say this strip NAILED it! I couldn’t scroll down fast enough! That’s some choice observation and damn funny stuff! As one of the Google+ uninitiated, this is certainly a nudge for me to look into it. Hysterical, Bearman!

    1. Bearman Avatar

Now if I could just figure out how to get all my twitter and facebook followers to follow me over to G+

  15. Comedy Plus Avatar

I don’t care for Twitter or Facebook so I doubt I’d care for Google+. Just saying. Enjoy every minute.

    I know ‘I suck’.

    Have a terrific day. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Bearman Avatar

You suck but if you decide not to suck so much, let me know and I’ll send you an invite.

  16. Friggin Loon Avatar

They won’t let me friggin play on Google Plus ๐Ÿ™ Bastards say it is all full up. I have my suspicions that they just don’t want me ๐Ÿ™

    1. Bearman Avatar

I’ll send you over an invite.

      1. Friggin Loon Avatar

You did Bearman, to no avail ๐Ÿ™

        1. Bearman Avatar

          No google in Oz?

          1. Binky Avatar

They’re probably just trying to keep the loons out.

  17. jynksie Avatar

I find google+ redundant. I rarely use it even though I’m on it. I prefer twitter, where my mindless inanity has a place to thrive. o.O … google+ almost demands you be witty and actually constructive. I get enough of THAT at work!

    1. Bearman Avatar

I am just as benign on G+ as I ever was on twitter though I can follow the conversation better when someone (smirks) me.

  18. MJ Avatar

    Ha,ha,ha! Top shelf funny!

  19. James Avatar

The Reddit one is my favorite. Nothing like trolls to tear apart any kind of creative output.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Yet as I posted before…I can’t quit you reddit

  20. DadaHyena Avatar

No Myspace? A bunch of porn “stars” trying to add you and random jackasses posting advertisements on your wall?

    1. Bearman Avatar

Give it time. It is early.

  21. Hjรถrtur Hjartarson Avatar

You had me at “hi”. I have just started using google+ and haven’t given it much thought but I love the google+ reader.

    1. Bearman Avatar

That is how I follow all my favs is using the Google RSS REader. Saves a whole lot of time versus clicking on links like I used to do.

  22. Scholar Mel Avatar

The Reddit one is so stinking true! Why does it seem that everybody on Reddit has a board stuck up their butt??

    1. Bearman Avatar

Power. And we haven’t figured out what is cool. But I got some love with this post so I think I’ll just make all my cartoons about G+

      1. Scholar Mel Avatar

Oh and btw, I submitted this: http://beartoons.com/2011/07/31/editorial-cartoon-google-plus-gifs/ to the google plus section of Reddit and they banned me from submitting anymore to that category.

I thought that was odd. Don’t worry Bearman, I liked you post ๐Ÿ™‚

        1. Bearman Avatar

Figures. Maybe because it was already there? I don’t know. Thanks though.

          1. Bearman Avatar

I had them do that to me via another section. I just wrote one of the admins and they took me off the bad list.

Hmm.. I’ve been wanting to go to Google+ for a while, see what it’s like. If you’ve got an invite… that’d be great.

    1. Bearman Avatar

      Will send it promptly.

  24. bschooled Avatar

I can’t keep up with all the social media applications. It’s like a full time job. By the time I figure Google+ out, they’ll have come up with a Yahoo+(with extra jazzhands!)

    1. Bearman Avatar

I’d be happy to give you jazz hands….did you see them?

  25. Jay Avatar

Once Google+ gets Farmville, I’m out.

    1. Bearman Avatar

      Already has angry birds.

  26. Sheila Deeth Avatar

They should pay you for that cartoon. You’ve definitely got me wanting to look into it.

    1. Bearman Avatar

If you need an invite, let me know.

  27. lisleman Avatar

Have you read about Mrs 4444 problems with G+ – interesting name policy over there.
I agree it is better than FB but I still use FB.

      1. Bearman Avatar

Yeah…I know, the names thing is a huge issue that people are not happy with. If Lady Gaga can keep her fake name..

  28. Frank M Hansen Avatar

Very funny take on the new social media site on the block. I have been neglecting all social media sites lately. Hard to find the time lately.

    1. Bearman Avatar

That’s because you are a working man. Wait, I am a working man too. I must be neglecting my wife. I’ll be right there honey.

  29. Binky Avatar

I have no idea what you’re talking about. But this beach sand is nice and soothing on my head.

    1. Bearman Avatar

I hate beach sand on my head.

  30. Jason Avatar

It seems like Beartoons is a social media site unto itself. So many comments to read through. Nice toon!

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks J. You still owe me an updated banner ad for the links page.

  31. bluntdelivery Avatar

    1. Bearman Avatar

What is this book of face you talk about?

  36. Bo Lumpkim Avatar

So far I am liking it. Thought I would have more time this week to check it out but spending a week in my home town has kept me busy with kinfolks and old friends. It has been great though.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Kin Folk and Old Folk are more important. Enjoy them.

  37. 25BAR Avatar

    1. Bearman Avatar

It’s a process. Here is what I do. Find a couple people you like and see who is following them. Those are the people to add.
