Editorial Cartoon: Colorado Memorial

Editorial Cartoon Dark Knight Shootings

Today’s editorial cartoon memorializes all those who senselessly were the victims of a crazed shooter in Colorado during a midnight screening of the Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises”.  Don’t know if this is too harsh an image for some but I didn’t want to sugar coat the tragedy either.  My heart goes out to all the victims’ families this week.  No more to say.

What has happened is so ugly and violent that no image can be harhser than that…very depressing the state of affairs ,the state of human heart..they way people play with guns and take lives..

      Thanks Soma

Brilliant Bearman. Thoughts and prayers to all involved, including the killer’s parents who are also victims in this tragedy.

      Thanks Loon

Not too harsh an image for me–just poignant.

What amazes me most is that everything in the cartoon looks like a cartoon, except the blood–which looks almost real. Excellent work.

      Thanks Scott

Exactly. Raises it from cartoon to serious comment. Beautifully done. And such a tragic event.

Thoughts and prayers for all involved.

Unfortunately, Batman has now been criminalized. I’m off to vote!

Very nice sir. I read a good word of advice from Ty Templeton: do not watch or read anything about the shooter. If he gets his name remembered and gets recognized, he gets what he wants. Honor the victims and their stories. Know him only as “the shooter”.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks Warren. Which has bugged me since it came out that most of the talk has been about the guy or gun control. Let’s remember the victims.

Hope your anniversary dinner went great.

  7. Bo Lumpkin Avatar

The scary thing is that there is no way to protect people from crazy. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. Good job Bearman.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Yet we spend our time talking about gun control versus mental health issues when this happens. As you said, hard to protect people from Crazy.

      1. Binky Avatar

Too many violent crazies out there.

      2. Bo Lumpkin Avatar

As i said twice today on two other sights concerning this sort of thing, The only thing that can stop bad and crazy people with guns is good and sane people with guns. Sadly sometimes it is hard to tell the difference.

      3. Warren Frantz Avatar

Bingo! That’s always what I say in these circumstances: who saw the signs and signals before-hand. As a teacher, I know we see early signs as early as kindergarten. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough funding to get the proper help for everyone. I can tell you, every teacher that I know helps fix the problem to the best of their ability.

        And yes, dinner was fantastic!

Words really can’t express the sorrow that goes along with such a senseless tragedy. I think your cartoon says it all.

    1. Bearman Avatar

      Thanks Tim.

  9. Byron Wilkisn Avatar

Well done sir! Not harsh at all. Truth is sometimes hard to hear or see, but it needs to be said/seen.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks Byron. Just don’t it to seem exploitative.

      1. Bo Lumpkin Avatar

Yours is no way exploitive. Can’t say that much for the TV networks though.

I found it very moving actually. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go flush the estrogen out of my eyes! [blinks]

Nicely done Bearman. I agree with Warren. Too often these psychos are given too much attention by the media which no doubt makes them feel important in their own sick twisted minds. The innocent victims & their families are the important ones to remember. To do such a thing is a disgusting way to make a name for himself. He’s a piece of lowlife scum, nothing more, so lets hope the media remembers that.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Already they are hashing out the fact that he dyed his hair red like the joker. I already don’t care about him or his fate.

  16. Miss R Avatar

This is haunting and beautiful, in both your work, the message and the tragedy. Voted for this on The Cartoonist Studio.
Thank you so much for creating this Bearman.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks Rach for all the support.

  17. G. B. Miller Avatar

Very sad and very tragic. The unfortunate thing about the movie is that it will now forever be associated with someone’s very sick and twisted act. Just like the movie “Taxi Driver”.

And I agree with you and the Governor of Colorado, to call this sick F by his name is to give him what he craves.

    Don’t feed the need.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Guess I wasn’t old enough to remember the Taxi Driver thing.

Agreed. I haven’t bothered to read much about him.

      1. Scholar Mel Avatar

Glad to hear I’m not the only one not old enough, because I don’t remember the Taxi Driver either.

I think it is fine not too harsh. I think it a willingness to face what happened honestly. It is so Sad. Watching the gunman on TV yesterday was so strange.

I voted. Great job on doing so well. It’s nice to celebrate your successes with you.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks Starla…didn’t really want to promote the contest with this one but appreciate people remembering.

By the way, the blood on this cartoon looked so real!

      Blood spatter photoshop brush.

One of the things that keeps me coming back here is your basic decency, Bearman. The image you created for this heart-rending topic has class. That’s something rare these days. It’s a simple beautiful visual statement that extracts the essence of what happened, mourns the victims, and makes the heart ache. Every time I look at it I cry a little. I like the touch you added by leaving out the word “Knight” on the ticket. Thanks for this, Bearman. <3
Also: voted. I've been trying to make up for lost time in the voting.

  21. Jande Avatar

Gah! Sorry, but I meant to say you left out the word “Rises”. *thumps forehead* Can you fix that for me please so I don’t look so much like the old fool I am? :`P

    1. Bearman Avatar

Well I read it as me blocking out the K changing Knight to Night so either way it works.

      Oh and thanks for voting.

  22. George Avatar

This was a great tribute, Bearman. Tasteful and heartfelt.

    1. Bearman Avatar

  23. Tony DiGerolamo Avatar

I wish the media wouldn’t broadcast this guy’s face and name. Too much attention.

    1. Bearman Avatar

I am with you. But others seem to have a desire to know.

  24. Scooter Avatar

Well done. As a Colorado resident and a fellow webcomicer…thanks for keeping it classy.

    1. Bearman Avatar

Thanks Scooter…and thanks for stopping by. Appreciate both.

It was a crazy, shocking, and sad thing man. Any memorial is a good thing, and yours is top notch.

This new Batman movie will always be tied to the shooting. It’s too bad. It will be ten years from now…”The Dark Night was a great film….remember the shooting?”

    1. Bearman Avatar

That’s why I will wait until it comes on DVD to watch it.
