Bill Cosby as Doctor Who

Bill Cosby as Doctor Who

Bill Cosby was one of the first actors considered to play the part of Doctor Who in a Warner Brothers film based on the famous BBC television series.

Prior to any trip via car/plane I need reading material.  So for this trip I picked up the 25th anniversary edition of Uncle Johns Bathroom Reader.  One of the stories talked about how during the dead times of the Doctor Who franchise, the BBC sold the film rights to Warner Brothers.   In the late 80’s/early 90’s, Bill Cosby was Americas favorite dad and doctor.  So WB supposedly approached Bill who turned it down.  The film was eventually made in 1996 but not by WB and it starred Paul McGann.

I tried to find some additional evidence but so far only thing I could find was an obscure reference to an Entertainment Weekly tidbit from an edition prior to them posting anything on the web.   Either way, Doctor Who fans would probably be up in arms.

Love the book though.  It is like my on the go edition of the Friggin Loon and Madhatters ie information that is interesting but really doesn’t make you any smarter haha.  Check out their website at http://bathroomreader.com or buy the book.

I watched and enjoyed Bill Cosby for years, years ago. He’s very funny, and very clean.
You did a great job drawing him.

  2. His companion can be Rudy!

  3. Comedy Plus says:

I love Bill Cosby. He’s a terrific actor. He’s true to himself and that’s rare in Holleyweird.

I’m looking goon on your sidebar too. Thanks.

    Have a terrific day. 🙂

  4. What, no Jello pudding snack in this image?

Oh, and Beware the Si(x)th, in 3 days. 😉

  5. Binky says:

I wouldn’t have been upset if he was Dr. Who, unless they made it into a comedy. He did do drama before.

  6. David Hurley says:

Nice drawing Bearman. The tidbit about Bill Cosby playing Dr Who is interesting, not sure I could imagine him playing the role. But when I was a kid I loved him on the Cosby Show. Bill is a legend and I highly respect him.

  7. lisleman says:

He’s a favorite of mine. Got to see him perform live once. His old comedy albums are my favorite thing he did. I had a couple of bathroom readers. Got them for Christmas once (or twice). My wife even read some of them.

“information that is interesting but really doesn’t make you any smarter”

I could work for an intelligence agency interested in that stuff!

You mean you’ve learnt nothing from reading our blogs ? 😆

  10. Nef says:

Caricature looks like him, but at least on my monitor, he looks white…

  11. ltpen315,barb says:

I see you patterned him after Tom Baker’s Doctor, who will always be my favorite!! I can see Cosby as the Doctor because Baker always had a sense of humor in the role. Love it!

    • Bearman says:

I tried to watch a couple other “Doctors” besides Tom Baker. He is the one I watched when we didn’t have cable and there was nothing else on so he is the one I associate

  12. Theo! Y’see! With the children and the time travelin’! Rudy!

  13. Andro says:

Don’t worry about the charity challenge throughout the month of May as I think your pockets will be picked, I mean emptied quicker than you thought? 🙂 Well I do hope so anyway Bearman 🙂 lol

I can’t imagine Bill Cosby as Doctor Who but perhaps
Chevy Chase would have been a good alternative 🙂 🙂

Have a fun evening Bearman 🙂 Brilliant cartooning by the way 🙂

    • Bearman says:

Chevy Chase then or NOW? Thanks A

      • Andro says:

Yes then and now 🙂 lol
        Actually Steve Martin could
        be an alternative, I mean
        those Daleks won’t stand a
chance if he takes the other
        Amigos with him 🙂 lmao

That was a great film ‘The Three Amigo’s’

        Andro

  14. Ah! I was going to ask what kind of freezer space ‘The Tardis’ has for ‘Puddin’ Pops’, but J.G. beat me to it… if only I had some kind of device that would transport me back in time…
(awesome likeness, Bearman – and I really like your star-field, too!)
    🙂

  15. Bearman, I’m digging the Tom Baker scarf on old Bill. The thought of Mr. Cosby portraying my beloved Doctor is rather disturbing though.
Learned something today and it’s not even 7:00 a.m. 1) The BBC was this desperate to keep the franchise alive 2) The WB passed it up.
Having done my time working for The Wabbit I can’t imagine the travesty this film would have wreaked heh.

Love love love your cartoon imagining of Doctor Cosby.

    • Bearman says:

Thanks Rach. Yeah I figured most Whovians would hate the thought of Bill in the role. I think the internet revived it with all the memes

  16. Nate Fakes says:

I keep hearing about, reading, etc. about Doctor Who. I’m not a big fan of British shows (well, ones I’ve seen) so not sure if I’d like it or not (I do like James Bond though). Might have to check it out. I’d definitely watch it though if Bill were in it.

    • Bearman says:

haha James Bond as a British SHOW?? Not into Doctor who either but Tom Baker is always in my mind when I hear it.

  17. Bill Murphy says:

What, did it conflict with Ghost Dad? 😛

  18. frigginloon says:

OMG, I have the whole series of Uncle Johns Bathroom Reader.

  19. Bo Lumpkin says:

I hear something or read something every week about Dr. Who and I still don’t know anything about him other than everyone else in the world knows Who Who is.

You will be featured again on Mildred’s Wall sign tomorrow and I wrote about your charity challenge in the blog area. I hope that costs you some bucks.

  20. Jason Salas says:

Nice work on “the Coz.” I find it ironic, even though Cosby WAS Fat Albert, he would never get cast as Fat Albert in a movie version because he is not fat.

Also, in real life, Cosby is not a medical doctor yet was cast as Dr. Huxtable. Conversely, he didn’t take the role of Dr. Who whom, from what I understand, is not a licensed physician (much like himself).

  21. George says:

I can’t see ol’ Puddin’-Pusher as Dr. Who, but I have read lots about certain movies that wanted to use the “hot” actors of the moment. Many classic, well-regarded films could have ended up with “flash-in-the-pan” actors that you don’t even hear from anymore.

  22. Mark Stokes says:

A fabulous illustration of a disastrous concept!

  23. Tony McGurk says:

Then Dr Who unscrewed the fuel cap on the tardis & pushed my head inside the fuel tang & said “What do you smell” I replied “I don’t smell nuthin’ Doc” then he said “That’s right because there ain’t no fuel left in the tardis. Some kids think their time lords are so dumb that they leave a little bit of fuel in the tank & the tardis runs out & the timelord thinks they must’ve ran out of fuel backing the tardis out the driveway. You think I’m so dumb that I get in the tardis, shut the door, it won’t start & I think , Oh I must have run out of fuel shutting the tardis door”
