Bearman Cartoon: PAYing Respects

As the masses gather at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to pay their final respects to Michael Jackson, I couldn’t help but think about what typically happens there. While I know there are going to be those outside trying to cash in on the MJ lovers, I wondered if inside the Staples Center it would be business as usual with concession stands open and them selling official programs. Sad state of affairs if so.

This was the background of the latest editorial cartoon.

Sad but it’s probably true :/

  2. yorksnbeans says:

    Ditto on Philly’s comment.

  3. nursemyra says:

I’d be more surprised if it weren’t true

  4. Sounds about right 🙁

  5. spilledinkguy says:

The creepiness does seem … yeah. That is about right. 🙂

  6. Wondering if anyone will show up here that was there and can provide the scoop.

  7. Lynn says:

good cartoon bearman and probably true. the spectacle of it all saddens me. the daughter that spoke was completely broken up and called him daddy. wow, i don’t know what i thought but i never thought i’d hear that.

  8. From what I’ve seen, it seems that people really behaved themselves well considering it was a funeral as well as a circus side show. It could have easily swayed the wrong way very quickly.

  9. This is so true. His funeral and overall death was like one huge, as Claire said, circus. It always seems that when celebrities die it is a week of madness.

  10. Nate Fakes says:

I’m sure there was that, and balloons! Can’t forget the balloons!

  11. John k says:

I have absolutely no doubt that the staples center had everything open, and made money off the whole thing. I think the only people who wont make money off this is California.

  12. George says:

I’ve already had offers to create a couple of MJ paintings. Would I be callous to do so? These folks wouldn’t have even wanted one before June 25th. Or would I be considered no better than an ambulance chaser?

If someone asks you and u make money I say great. I would only give you crap when I start seeing you selling velvet mj’s in the gas station parking lot.

  13. haha. thats hilarious. and probably true.

gee, wonder why there was no open casket?

  14. Lynn says:

some people want one but i’m sure the family probably didn’t want to take the chance that the paps wouldnt take photos….hence making more money..and on and on..

  15. Just to be different I’ll say “Not a chance!” They have far too much respect! Give your head a shake.

  16. Tony says:

Ha Ha Brilliant cartoon, cold beer, dead body, comfy funeral parlour chairs. It just don’t get any better than that 🙂

  17. alantru says:

Soon the circus will leave town… Yeah, right! The dead guy has legs. Oh, and I saw him at a burger shop yesterday. Dead? No way, my friend…

  18. jammer5 says:

The death of any great person is always exploited by those who can. The times dictate just how far the exploitation goes. In this case, I wouldn’t be surprised if his body wasn’t dug up and pieces sold on ebay.

  19. What did you think of the 1.4 Million it cost LA to provide security for the service?

  20. fnord says:

Did he un-die yet so he can be like Elvis and we can have ‘sightings’ for the next several decades?
