10 17 13 Bearman Cartoons Castration is the Cure for BaldnessWhile reading a recent issue of Mental Floss Magazine, I came across a way to prevent men from losing their hair that has supposedly been known to work since the time of Aristotle.   CASTRATION.   So for those men who say they will do anything to keep their hair, how far will you really go?

And for those already bald, sorry it is too late for this method to work.

  • How Dexter Ended

    How Dexter Ended

9 24 13 Bearman Cartoons How Dexter Ended Cartoon*** SPOILER ALERT – DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU PLAN ON WATCHING THE FINALE OF DEXTER ON SHOWTIME – SPOILER ALERT ***

So today’s cartoon is in honor of the series finale of one of my favorite shows – Dexter.  For eight seasons on Showtime audiences have grown to love a serial killer with a code of ethics.  As horrible as he may have been, the writers continuously pit Dexter against even worse baddies forcing you to root for Dexter each season.   Of course nothing could ever top the fourth season and its finale starring John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer.    If all you know of Lithgow is his work in Third Rock from the Sun, then you will be even more creeped out about his run as a malicious serial killer and father.   So of course many fan sites are saying this was a weak season and quite a few are disappointed with the ending.

SERIOUSLY…THIS IS WHERE THE SPOILING BEGINS:

Some thought he should finally get the happiness he craved with Hannah, the first person to finally put something in Dexter’s heart beside his Dark Passenger.   Others thought he should have killed himself as he boats off into the eye of the Hurricane.   Many claim this was the weakest of all the seasons (I disagree as I think it was Season 6 with the exception of the last three episodes).   This was no Trinity Killer with my heart racing through half the episodes but it had some definite strengths and a couple weaknesses but those were limited to two plot points.

First, Hannah is a wanted fugitive and knows that there are people actively looking for her.  No hat, no haircut, no dye job?   Dexter producers, Scott Buck and Sara Colleton have an explanation here in this Entertainment Weekly article but it still didn’t make sense for Dexter not to at least buy her a wig.

Second, if nothing else Dexter learned in the fourth season that his inaction has just as many consequences as his actions.  Because he chose not to kill the Trinity Killer when he had the chance, it ultimately ended up in Rita being murdered.   Fast forward to this season and the same situation was put in front of Dexter with the Brain Surgeon.  Dexter’s inaction led to the Brain Surgeon ultimately being responsible for Deb’s death.

Outside of these points, the season did a good job of creating a sense of moving onward for many of the rest of the cast including Hannah finding out about Dexter’s “death” online while in Argentina.  Though I have to admit I was waiting for Masuka’s daughter to do something really crazy.

In the end, Dexter realizes that the only way to keep from hurting the ones he loves is to avoid human contact and move to where his interaction with others is limited.   So we see him in the final scene as a loner bearded lumberjack.   My wish is that if they ever make the series into a musical, my cartoon will be an inspiration and it ends with Dexter singing the famous “I’m a Lumberjack” song by Monty Python.

  • Imitation Crab

    Imitation Crab

9 16 13 Bearman Cartoons Imitation CrabSo today’s cartoon was inspired by eating some imitation crab over the weekend, which of course made me wonder what fish tastes like crab.  Well actually none.   The primary ingredient is Alaska Pollock (which is also the primary type of fish used in many fast food restaurants “fish” entrees).   Then it gets processed to hell with flavorings, colorings and other things I can’t explain.   But in the end, it is tasty!!

Any crab (imitation or otherwise) lovers out there?

  • Facts about Napoleon

    Facts about Napoleon

8 1 13 Napoleon plays in Sandbox Afraid of Cat Bearman CartoonsSo as today’s cartoon shows, there seems to be more to Napoleon that many of us didn’t know.  Two things I found interesting while reading this article were that he created battle plans in a sandbox and he was desperately afraid of cats.   Well I would be too if I had to fend the cats off from trying to pee in my sandbox.   This was fun to do so I will be coming up with more odd facts to share in cartoon form in the future.

Won’t be around the blogosphere much this weekend so please try to behave.

  • When Food Goes Bad

    When Food Goes Bad

When Food Goes Bad by Bearman CartoonsIt is interesting how one thing inspires the next.   Thinking about smells in my last post got me thinking about when food goes bad.  Which of course drove an image of a gang of bad food, which of course led that group of a moldy steak, cracked egg, and sour milk to end up in a police line-up.  Don’t ask me how my brain works.

So of course it was time to do a long overdue tshirt design and this is what I came up with.   Think it might be good for a baby bib or kids shirt so I put them on all those things now available on my store.

It was fun experimenting with a single color palette of blue.   Anything you see that is dark blue lines used to be black.  I think I need to do a tutorial for Photoshop (Elements) users on how easy it is to change your line color after the fact.

Anyone ever have food poisoning??   I think I am up to four times in my life, but I eat out a bunch.

  • Addicted to Your Own Smells

    Addicted to Your Own Smells

7 21 13 Addicted To your own Scent Bearman CartoonsRaise your hand if what you smell on yourself doesn’t seem to be as bad as if it were from someone else.  Or maybe you can’t believe something could actually smell that bad that you actually keep sniffing it.  That is my story.

Today’s cartoon wasn’t really inspired by a smelly sock but by something I sneezed up recently.   The force of my sneeze expel what I thought was a piece of my lung in my mouth.  It was like a hard little ball.  Actually, I figured it might be a food particle and I didn’t want to swallow it so I pulled it out of my mouth.  I couldn’t identify it by sight so of course I smelled it.

WHOA!!!  It was like a ball of the worst bad breath imaginable.  But for some odd reason I kept sniffing it not because I enjoyed it but because I couldn’t believe something so dreadful could come out of my body.

After viewing this cartoon my wife said I should have drawn a fart because you never seem to mind your own brand like you do someone else’s.

  • How the Environmentalists Screwed Us

    How the Environmentalists Screwed Us

    5-20-13-Bearman-Cartoon-Why Environmentalists Screwed Us

Today’s cartoon is for the environmental movement and what I consider a failure of public opinion.   Many of my friends on social media are sharing this article which asks the question why people can’t believe in Global Warming if the majority of scientists do.  On one post by fellow Cincinnatian Craig Froehle I wrote the following:

I think the Environmental movement made a grave mistake years ago when pushing the Global Warming agenda.  Not saying it is true but even those who believe in Global Warming will point to history of it happening on earth and question whether the current climate change is man made or natural.

Pollution seemed to be something people could grasp as it was something visual they could see and see the effects of making better choices.   IMO many of the strides we made years ago to fight pollution are being stalled as people debate Global Warming.

Pollution and the impact of it is a visible thing.   So when we clean our rivers or our air, we can see a visual impact of our efforts which in turn helps decrease issues with Global Warming.   But now we are hung up in a debate whether it is man-made or naturally occurring.

    What do you think?

Today’s cartoon was done for another friend who started Project Blue Collar that raises awareness and encourages people to adopt rescue dogs.  Might have a few more coming soon.

  • Grumpy Cat vs Grumpy Cat

    Grumpy Cat vs Grumpy Cat

    Garfield Vs. Grumpy Cat

I’d be surprised if this cartoon hasn’t been done by someone but I purposefully didn’t look so it wouldn’t impact my vision.  For the unaware, the “grumpy cat” on the left is the original grumpy one – Garfield the Cat.   The unsuspecting feline is the internet meme sensation Grumpy Cat.

I would think I might have issues with someone else taking my gig too.  Now I need to figure out what that gig is.
