  • Karen Owen Powerpoint: Editorial Cartoon from George Ford

Editorial Cartoon: Duke University Karen Owen Powerpoint

One good turn deserves a comeuppance.  As a thank you (or payback) to my guest cartoon at George Ford’s Addanac City, he has created a guest editorial cartoon for me.

Seems a little coed at Duke University has created another sex scandal at the University.  Little Karen Owen bedded 13 athletes at the university between her sophmore and senior year.  She then decided to turn those exploits into a thesis of sorts in Powerpoint form showcasing pictures and graphs of the sexual aptitude of each of the men.   She titled the presentation “An Education Beyond The Classroom: Excelling In The Realm Of Horizontal Academics” but it has been referred to as the “Fuck List”  Well what started as a joke among a few of her friends has of course spread across the internet.

So now there are rumors flying of both lawsuits and book deals.  What a crazy world.  Hey if anyone wants to pay me for the rights to a book on my lack of sexual exploits in college, I am standing by.

Love how George included his main character Hank as the water boy.  Any other webcomic artists who want to jump into the editorial cartoon realm with a guest cartoon here (when it doesn’t fit what you are doing on your own site), just let me know.

  • Editorial Cartoon: Ahmadinejad Throws Stones at Israel

So after appearing at the United Nations and joining the wacko conspiracy theorists that the United States planned the attacks of September 11, 2001, Iranian President Ahmadinejad is back for more.   It seems on a planned trip to Lebanon he indicated that he will throw a symbolic stone at Israel just to show how much he hates that country.

Note:  So I had this one ready for Wednesday and totally dropped the ball as just as I was going to publish it, I realized I wrote “Jordan” instead of “Lebanon”.  Was out of town so couldn’t fix it and therefore this was the first I could post.

  • Duncan Caricature

As promised, the winner of my Facebook fan challenge was Duncan of Madhatters.  Here is the finished piece and here is Duncan in his original glory.

Hope you enjoy it.  Dunc, I’ll have a print out to you later this week.  If there is enough interest, maybe I’ll repeat the contest in the next couple months.

  • Strip Clubs and Ground Zero Editorial Cartoon

Strip Club at Ground Zero Cartoon

Props to our old friend Dan McGinley (who has since quit blogging) but is still lurking around the blogosphere.  He came up with this gem about all the “Hallowed” businesses surrounding Ground Zero in New York.

I believe the strip club is the Pussycat Lounge and the horse betting is definitely near as well.  I made up the Checks Cash place but who knows if there is one there.  My joke is that you know your neighborhood has gone down hill when it gets a check cash place and a dollar store.

    Thanks Dan!

  • WWE Signs

As promised (or threatened), I am posting all of the signs I made for the live WWE Raw taping on Monday night.  I can now say that my work has been seen on worldwide television as they made it all over the telecast (see below for links).

With the exception of Orton and Sheamus, I aimed to focus on those who tend not to have many signs made but who I could guarantee would be there.  Here they are with explanation of who they are for the non-wrestling fans:

    Randy Orton:

Made for the female fans (and held up by a female), Randy’s finishing move is called the RKO. Here is the sign and a shot of him from ringside.

    Randy Orton - RKO ME

    Sheamus:

The first Irish born WWE Champion.  Hated by the crowd and loved by me, he is called the Human Jar of Mayonaisse by fans and fellow wrestlers because of his whiteness as he goes against type and does not spend time in the tanning bed.

    Santino Marella:

Less known for his in ring action and more for his comedic bits, Santino is a fan favorite but you don’t see many signs of his. He wrestled in a match for Thursday nights airing of Superstars so remains to be seen if this sign made it.   There is a group of newbies that go by the name Nexus.  The slogan on the back of their shirts is “You’re either Nexus or against us” ergo:

    Santino Marella Nexus spoof Sign

    Mark Henry:

One of the most underutilized wrestlers today.  Has won the Worlds Strongest Man contest and while he was a “bad guy” was unstoppable.  Now as a “good guy” he is lost in the shuffle.

    Mark Henry Oh Henry Sign

    Michael Cole:

Ringside play by play announcer for the WWE.  Michael tends to get little respect from the WWE universe but I think he is great and wanted him to get his due props.  One of his classic lines during any match is to say “Vintage ______ (fill in wrestler’s name here)”  So I created this:

    WWE Michael Cole Vintage

I then cut out a rectangle and attached a round piece behind it with different wrestlers names so it could be fitting for many different matches.    See what I mean with this image:

WWE Announcer Michael Cole Caricature saying Vintage Cena

(the crowd silhouette, I got as free stock from somewhere but can’t find where I wrote it down.  If someone comes across the source, let me know and I’ll add it)

    On Camera Moments

For an official WWE pic of the Orton sign click here and go to pic number 12 of 17.

For an official WWE pic of the Mark Henry sign click here and go to the last image (number 19) and look behind Edge’s left elbow

See the Mark Henry sign in video action here and go to 1:54.  You’ll see it right behind Edge.

  • Banana Lover’s Day Cartoon

    Bearman Cartoon Banana Lovers Day

Normally a joke this bad would fit under the category of “Rejected Reader’s Digest Cartoons” but today happens to be National Banana Lover’s Day (no Susi NOT what you are thinking).  Interesting though, according to this list of food holidays, I did miss a golden opportunity for a cartoon on August 3 AKA  “Grab Some Nuts Day”

Oh and if you don’t get the joke in today’s cartoon, please ask a 3rd grader to explain it to you.

To celebrate Banana Lover’s Day, some other cartoonists have done their own take on a Banana Gag.  Check them out and tell ’em who sent you.

  • Always a Critic

Muppet Old Guys - Statler and Waldorf

A group of cartoony folks do something on twitter called #tuesdaysketch whereby someone sends out a topic and people sketch a cartoon under the theme.

This week the topic was “muppets”.  Sometimes I wish I could be as honest and Waldorf and Statler. Check out all the entries at the Flickr Group.

Come back Friday for something I am postive will “A-Peel” to you.

  • Dr Laura and Free Speech Cartoon

Bearman Cartoons Dr Laura Free Speech

Today’s editorial cartoon was inspired by national radio host, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who announced on Larry King last week that she was going to quit her show at the end of her contract (in four months) because she felt her free speech was being limited.  Seems few would accept her apology on the air for not only dropping the n-bomb multiple times during a call but actually told a black female caller that maybe she shouldn’t have married outside her race if she was “hypersensitive about color and don’t have a sense of humor.”

Now one thing I agree with Dr. Laura in her announcement to Larry King was when she used the phrase, “Debate don’t Eradicate” when it comes to speech you don’t believe in.  I think people tend to focus too much on what everyone else is doing and not enough on dealing with their own racist beliefs.  So if I can call you out as a racist before you can do it to me, I win because no one wants to defend themselves after being called a racist.

    HOWEVER,

    A.  Read the transcript of the call.  Not once did the caller ever get to finish any point because Dr. L constantly cut her off and didn’t listen to her entire example or point.  I get that radio hosts have to move things quickly but don’t complain about having your speech limited when you are in the power position.

    B.  READ the TRANSCRIPT.  The arrogance that some people have that they assume with the power the hold.  Oh my.

    C.  She was planning on not extending her contract prior to this incident.  So this just looks like grandstanding to me.

    D.  She mentioned to Larry that even without radio she still has her website, podcasts, YouTube, books (and not mentioned were her speaking engagements) so is her speech really being limited?

    E. Just because you have a 1st Amendment right to Free Speech in the United States, do NOT mean I can’t have an opposing opinion.  Yet people only think Free Speech applies to themselves and not the other guy.

  • Mosque “at” Ground Zero Cartoon

This was actually based on a conversation I had with someone about the proposed Mosque to be built a few blocks from Ground Zero in New York.  Unfortunately, as the media tends to do, they keep referring to the proposed center as the Mosque AT Ground Zero.  When I asked the person if they would be OK if the Mosque were built a few blocks away, she said yes.  I said, “well that’s the plan anyway”.  Then she backtracked and came up with more reasons why it shouldn’t be built.  To which I replied, “How far is far enough?”.

Matt Sledge of the Huffington Post did a nice article that showcased that you can’t see the proposed site from Ground Zero and even if you came via the subway, you would have to go out of your way to see the Mosque.  So for all the arguments against it, which I am open to discussing, can we at least agree that the Mosque will not be AT Ground Zero?

For those concerned about the impact of a sixteen story Mosque that close to ground zero, I have a simple solution.    Build a seventeen story Synagogue and an eighteen story Church right next door.

  • The Expendables Cartoon

    The Expendables Cartoon

Today folks is a special treat.  As I typically struggle with just one caricature in a cartoon, this week I had FOUR.

Sylvester Stallone’s new movie, The Expendables, was released on Friday.  It’s both a whos who and a whos that of action films.  The main guy in this cartoon is former Everybody Hates Chris dad, Terry Crews.  Before that show (and to some of you now) he is one of those “That Guys” in Hollywood where you might not know his name but you definitely have seen him in plenty of movies including the classic “White Chicks”.

But as I got to thinking about the other cast, they are known for either being misunderstood, monotone or mumbling their lines.

    – Stallone – Mumbler
    – Arnold Schwarzenegger – Misunderstood
    – Li – Mumbler (and sometimes Misunderstood)
    – Roarke – Mumbler and Misunderstood
    – Jason Statham – Monotone
    – Dolph Lundgren – Misunderstood
    – Randy Coutoure – A who’s that unless you are a UFC fan (and I have never heard him talk)
    – Stone Cold Steve Austin – A who’s that unless you are a Wrestling fan (but he has great mic skills)

So I could see Crews in this movie saying he wasn’t expendable as even the enemy needs him to interpret what these other guys are saying.  Yet I love all these guys movies because I am an action junky.  Though I think they should have included Richard Roundtree.
