  • Merry Hanumas – Go Both Ways Greeting Card

It has been a good week. First I have sold a few of the above Merry Hanumas – Go Both Ways designs at my shop.   We have a bunch of Jewish and Christian friends/family so rather than NOT send cards, I design my own.  This was a concept that I never did use for our cards but thought I’d throw it up on my store for the heck of it.  And several people have bought (woohoo $10 for me). And don’t tell me it should be Chrismukkah. That name sucks.

Then I find out that I won a contest over at G’s Cedars Mountain Website.  I don’t recall answering correctly but I am not one to argue especially since he wrote such a nice endorsement of my own blog.  Please go check it out here.

Finally, as I mentioned I have been doing some random Muggings (caricatures).  One I did last week was for fellow cartoonist Jim Huntsman.  He is on Google Plus and has his own site at Comic Kvetches.  This was my payback

  • Joel Poirier takes on Bearman

Joel Poirier does a caricature of Bearman Cartoons

This incredible version of the BEARMAN is compliments of Joel Poirier, cartoonist extraordinairre, and creator of Stripped Comics (don’t get any ideas, it is not porn – it’s about Superheroes.)

I have been doing some caricatures on Google Plus that I call “muggings”.  You can check out some I have done here.  Joel thought I should get a taste of my own medicine and drew this up for me.  Love it!!

Make sure to check out Joel and follow him on Google Plus or Facebook

    UPDATE

Ryan Klassen of City Folk the Webcomic wanted to join the party too so he did a mash up of Steve Buscemi and Bearman.

Find him on Google Plus too.

  • I am the 1% T-shirt

It has been a while since I created a new shirt design for my shop.   This one screamed to be done.  The great thing is it works whether you are part of the Occupy Wall Street (or Elm Street) crowd AKA the 99% or if you are part of the 1% crowd.  See how democratic I am.  Appropriate for all political spectrums and income levels.

  • Mad Art of Caricature and Made for Art

So I was excited to get the mail this week and find my ordered copy of Tom Richmond’s The Mad Art of Caricature.   For the uninformed, Tom is one of the regular artists for Mad Magazine along with a host of other projects.  Pretty much most of the movie/tv spoofs of the last 10 years has been his work.  He also hosts a blog and has been an invaluable resource on copyright and caricatures.

    Here is my signed copy.

On this blog post you can see Tom actually drawing the Alfred E Neuman to ship to me (ok maybe it wasn’t mine but it looks like it COULD be).

The book looks amazing and I can’t wait to dig in and find out all the things I have been screwing up in my own caricatures.  But Tom, I think your foreign printer messed up a little with this insert.  I can’t find this book or this author online..haha

On a separate note, I want to give a shout out to a Google Plus friend who has been very supportive over there.  Artist Eric Johnson has created a new site called Made for Art .   This is how he describes the site:

If you enjoy browsing interesting, creative sites showcasing the talents of interesting, creative people, you should check out my new site. Whether its art, poetry, webcomics, ebooks, sculpture, photography, crafts or hobbies, etc., let MADE FOR ART be your link to Creative Minds .   And if you are a Creative Mind and would like to share your work and links on this unique, up and comings site, just let me know you’d like to be added to the MADE FOR ART circle!

Head over there as he has featured my work and if you want Eric to include you in the future reach out and support him.

  • Byron Rempel Zombies

Byron Rempel Caricature by Bearman of Beartoons.com

Zombie lovers like Mark Stokes of Zombie Boy Comics might like my latest cartoon and first ever Zombie.  The poor unfortunate soul with his head ripped off is one Byron Rempel, a zombie drawing loving artist I found on Google+.  (His site and his G+ Profile)  For the last many weeks, Byron has been on a race to zombify any and every Google+ user.  So I figured the tables needed to be turned.

He has gotten so many requests lately that he set up some weird auction thing that I can’t figure out how it works, so you can be really really nice to him or you have exactly 4 days left to PAY to be immortalized by him.  Right now he is looking to put YOUR face on a tshirt.    For $25 you can have your face among the many on the tshirt he is designing and get a 5×7 watercolor of your mug.  Go to his Indigogo campaign before end of Saturday.

Also I had the opportunity to do a guest cartoon for David Wilborn of Urban Jungle Webcomic.  Click the thumbnail below to see it fully on his site.

Finally I have added some links on the right to some cartoon conglomerates that I am now a part of as well as some new people on the Beartoons Links page including Tomversation cartoons and Impersonals.   So check out the links page and support all the people who support me.

Full circle – Mark you still owe me a banner ad for the links page.  Oh and as always let me know if you need an invite to Google Plus (its where all the cool people hang out…and me too)  Any Zombie lovers or haters out there?

  • Commenter Word Cloud – Tagxedo

Tagxedo Word Cloud of Bearman Cartoons Frequent Commenters

So I found a very fun site that George Ford will now yell at me for him wasting countless hours playing there.  Tagxedo not only lets you create word clouds but also allows you to create custom shaped word clouds.    I created a list of my top commenters over this year.  By duplicating the names of the most frequent commenters in my list, it allows you to see them bigger than the rest.  And the custom shape?  You might recognize it as the silhouette of my famous green hair gravatar.

What is nice is that Tagxedo will take your blog or twitter feed and automatically create a word cloud for you.

Right now adding custom shapes, like my gravatar, is free while it is in Beta but head over and check out this video on 101 Ways you can use Tagxedo.

  • The Monkey Business Illusion

Before going any further, watch the video above. Go ahead. I’ll wait.

    (hums Jeopardy Theme to self)

I just finished reading Daniel Simons book, The Invisible Gorilla that deals with this video and other topics related to observation, multi-tasking and other ways our intuition decieves us. I am planning a cartoon based on one of my favorite learnings from the book.

Tell me how you did in the comments.

BTW, I did a guest cartoon for Jande over at Aedre’s Firefly. Check it out.

  • Caricature Contest Winner

We have a winner in the Facebook Caricature Contest – Lindsay Barlow who found me on stumbleupon (seems someone actually reads the stuff that comes in front of them there).

Don’t get too upset if you were not picked…as I might pull from those entries in the future.

  • Free Caricature

That’s right, it is back. You can win a digital caricature of you, a friend, your dog or your favorite celebrity.   This is an exclusive contest for those following Beartoons on Facebook.  Don’t worry for those of you who don’t have Facebook, I will be doing other contests soon.

    Here are the guidelines:

    • Go to the Beartoons Facebook Page and hit the Like Button
    • Add a comment there that you want to be included in the contest
    • Share the contest with your Facebook friends for an additional entry.  Let me know in the FB comments
    • Enter by Midnight Tuesday July 5.
    • Winner will get a free digital version of their caricature.  Use it as a gravatar, on facebook or however you would like.

Entrants must allow me to use one of their source pictures in a blog post to show the results and as always my disclaimer is there is no guarantees that you will think the finished product looks anything like you.  But that is a better guarantee (and price) than those crappy street caricature artists give.

    Good luck

  • Zero – Animated Short

Thanks to Laughing Squid, I came across one of the most incredible award winning short animations from the husband and wife team of Christopher and Christine Kezelos.  Originally based in Australia, they now run Zealous Creative out of Los Angeles.   The creators description of this yarn tale: “Born into a world of numbers, an oppressed zero discovers that through determination, courage, and love, nothing can be truly something.”

    Take a look:

And a behind the scenes video as well.
