Sherlock Holmes Cartoon

A Sherlock Holmes cartoon in present day could cause some dilemma as there are currently two series running using the iconic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character.  Which one to choose?  Some are enamored with the BBC/PBS co produced “Sherlock” starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the role.  Others will prefer the CBS version titled “Elementary” starring Jonny Lee Miller.  I don’t have to make choices because I like them both but I would definitely give the edge to Elementary (mainly because they produce more than six hours a season).

But when you have two Sherlocks at once, won’t there be confusion when they both show up to 221B Baker Street (for the uninformed that is the address Sherlock Holmes lives in the books).  Things are easy as the BBC/PBS version takes place in London while in the CBS version, Sherlock (while still maintaining the Baker street address) has moved to New York City.

And for those who like trivia, Jonny Lee Miller’s first wife was this famous actress (click the link to find out).

I know Christina Wald at PopSmoothie likes the BBC/PBS version as my inspiration to draw this was from her recent sketch of Cumberbatch.  Any other fans of either series?

It is not so elementary, Watson when there are two Holmes.

  2. Dave says:

I watched Elementary for a while. It is fine but too easy to figure out the plot. Also, at one point Holmes apologized to the police captain (not sure his name) and I thought that was out of character for him. Of course, I am just going off of BBC’s/Movies’ take on Sherlock. I’ve never read the books.

BBC’s Sherlock has me guessing the whole time.

I do wish that Sherlock would at least do 5 hours per year as opposed to 3.

  3. Comedy Plus says:

I have to remember to turn on the television so I’m not familiar with either of these. Just don’t watch television.

    Have a fabulous day. 🙂

  4. lisleman says:

Don’t watch that much TV. The sharing of the London home could be worked out if the Sherlock from NYC just stayed on NYC time while the other did his London time.

  5. Bill Murphy says:

I watched a little bit of Elementary while channel surfing and was completely confused. Watson had a sex change?

  6. David Hurley says:

I LOVE the PBS series! But I haven’t seen the one on CBS. And that’s a pretty fantastic drawing of Cumberbatch, Bearman!

  7. Tim Green says:

I did not know that tidbit about Jonny and Angie! I think everyone in Hollywood has slept with everyone else!

  8. Tony McGurk says:

Hmmm… A real dilemma. Maybe they’ll have to do Paper, Scissors, Rock for it. Best outta 3

  9. Mark Stokes says:

Maybe they can get Mrs. Garrett to play Mrs. Hudson! Great drawing of the two Mr. H’s, Bearman !

  10. benzeknees says:

I like both series & watch them avidly! I like the twist of Elementary where there is a female Dr. Watson (Lucy Liu), but I also like the more traditional BBC version too. I can’t pick a favorite. Networks please don’t cancel either!

  11. Binky says:

I’ve only seen a few episodes of the BBS series, but I thought it was really well done. Even if they don’t produce very many.

  12. G.B. Miller says:

Sorry my friend, but the one produced by Grenada Television featuring Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes for me.

    Father Nature’s Corner

  13. I’m an “Elementary” girl all the way. You have shocked and amazed me with your bit of trivia. As a huge fan (yes, the pathetic gushing kind) of Angelina I had no idea “my” Sherlock’s first wife.

  14. Gruhn says:

I’m going with the PBS series. It’s a little too smart for me but so well done. In any case, these are great drawings of both!

  15. Deb says:

I’m not familiar with the shows, but I really like your artwork!

  16. frigginloon says:

Why won’t they wear a deerstalker? Cumberbatch is creepy. The type of creepy that could end up at the end of your bed … or in it 🙂

  17. I need to at least check out Sherlock… it has the same show runner/writer as Doctor Who (Steven Moffat). Most of my friends are into Sherlock, I think.

  18. p.j. says:

I’m a fan of the BBCA one. My oldest daughter got me hooked.

  19. Joseph says:

I just watch car rebuilding shows and home improvement shows. Not really into anything else. But I did read a lot of Sir Arthur Conan’s stories while in college.
