  • The Stooge Remake

Mickey Mouse and Roger Rabbit in the Stooge Remake by Bearman Cartoons

Rumors are afoot that Disney/Pixar are looking at remaking The Stooge, a movie made starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in 1952.

the-stooge-movie-poster-1952-from Movie Poster Shop I am not a big watcher of old movies but there was a time in my life when I couldn’t get enough Jerry Lewis (I guess I have some French in me). So imagine my joy when I learned that one of my favorite animated characters, Roger Rabbit, was potentially going to play the Lewis role in a Disney/Pixar remake.

So imagine my delight in reading this blog post by Gary K. Wolf that the movie was in the works.  Gary Wolf wrote the book on Roger Rabbit.  No literally he did.   Back in 1981 he wrote “Who Censored Roger Rabbit” which came to the big screen as “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”

To this day it stands the test of time as the best movie ever to combine live action and animation.  Surprisingly with technology as advanced as it has over the last 2 decades, I am surprised no one has tackled the genre much since.

So I had to draw a preview of what I hope actually gets made.  Roger needs some new younger fans before Disney puts him out to pasture.

  • The End?

Given that Duncan nominated me for a Versatile Blogger Award the other day, I find the timing ironic to this post I have been planning all week.   Well first let me tell you seven things about myself as required of me to accept this honor.

    1. I took a stand up comedy class several years ago.  The final required us to do a 10 minute set in front of a live audience.  I consistently speak in front of small groups of 15-30 people and have given presentations in front of groups as large as 300.   That I had no problem doing.  HOWEVER, put me at a cocktail party with a bunch of people I don’t know in a non business setting and I am a wallflower.
    2. I have been posting cartoons online since 2006.  First on someone else’s site and since 2008 on my own.
    3. I am in awe every day of the talented and funny people that consistently make their way over here to comment.
    4. In the last 3 years I have not missed a my self imposed schedule of posting every Sunday and Wednesday.  (Something keen observers will notice I broke my streak when I didn’t post this past Sunday)
    5. I am constantly jealous of those who can draw better than I.
    6. It takes me an hour to visit everyone’s blog in my RSS reader and comment EACH DAY.  Many times I eat lunch at my desk and pour through.  Other times I am doing it after work.
    7. I feel like the great and powerful OZ.   Because of the engagement I get on my site, people assume I get tons of traffic.   The reality is that I average about 400-600 hits a day.   The same amount as I had 3 years ago.

So what are you trying to tell us??

Well work (my real job) has been busier than ever.  Twice in the last four months (this week included) I ended up on antibiotics for sinus infections/flu because of running myself ragged.   Additionally, I have been wanting to take some classes, wanting to revamp the outdated look of this site, wanting to write a book, wanting to get better at caricaturing and do more of it, wanting to develop a game idea I have had.   All of which has been taking a back seat to my self imposed posting schedule and desire to comment on everything my regulars post as well.

    So are you done?

In short, NO!.  However, there are going to be some changes to this blog and to what I do.   First I am no longer posting on any sort of schedule.   When I am inspired I will post.   That means I might not post for several weeks or I might post 3 times in a week.  All depends.  Second, while I truly love you all, I will not be making the rounds to other blogs nearly as much as I have in the past.  I need to force myself to take on some of the other things on my list.   It won’t mean I am going away, just not as big of a presence.  If you want me to see your stuff…post on Google Plus.  That is easy for me to check in during grocery store line waits or in the car when the wife is driving.  Going from blog to blog on a phone is hard.

I hope to share with you my progress in my endeavors.  I have accomplished what I wanted with this site for now.  It is time to take it in some new directions.  Hope you will come around periodically to check it out.

    Thanks

  • The Balding Handbook

The Balding Handbook by David Stern

My very close friend David Stern is suffering loss.  We all have experienced a loss of some form or another.   But for my friend David, it is a loss very close to home.   His HAIR!

So traumatized by this loss of his manliness, David has mourned his hair in form much like the five stages of grieving for a loved one.  He has compiled his journey from pain into a book “The Balding Handbook” hoping to help those of you who are on your own hair loss journey.

An excerpt from the ebook page on Amazon:

“The Balding Handbook” takes you beyond those embarrassing denial moments (hats, combovers, plugs, pieces), keeps you out of jail during that angry second stage, helps you construct a perfect offer to God while you bargain for your hair back, comforts you through the depths of balding depression, and brings you into the light. Of course, you’ll need sunscreen when you get there, but the few extra bucks you shell out to the Hawaiian Tropic® people is a trifle when you consider the incredible life that awaits you after reading this book.

Get one for the bald guy in your group.  Just got home and my copy was in the mail so will be reading it this week.  Thankfully, yours truly has no need for this book other than to laugh at the pain of others (and pray the hair gods stay true and loyal to me).   Soon he might actually do something with all the tshirts I designed for him as well….ahem.

In other news, if you have time, please check out another artist that deserves some love in the web, Dr Faust.    He has a special post for all of you for this time of year. (one I think Androgoth will appreciate)

Finally another webcomic friend, David Higgins of  Greetings from Earth has started an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for his website and also try to raise money for Habitat for Humanity and MS.  Check it out.

For those that haven’t realized it yet, I spent the last several weeks in Australia.  I’ll be posting cartoons inspired by my trip starting Wednesday.

  • Webcomics at 1 or 100

So I am taking off for a few weeks and won’t be trolling your sites much if at all in that time.  I asked and recieved some great guest cartoons in my absence.  The task was to draw your cartoon character at either age 1 or 100.   The above was what I made of myself when I did this several years ago.

    Here is the schedule:

So as always give them the love you don’t usually afford me and share their work on social media and talk them up.  And please try not to make a mess while I am gone.

  • Bo Lumpkin Week

    Bo Lumpkin Taking a Break

Today in the United State we celebrate Thanksgiving and reflect on all the great things in our lives.   I know for me being able to share my creative work and have people actually appreciate and comment on that means the world to me.

Someone else that it means the world to is long time commenter and online friend, Bo Lumpkin.   Those who follow Bo know that he has a passion for cartooning and more recently jewelry making.   I know he appreciates all the comments and visitors to both his sites.

    http://bolumpkin.wordpress.com/

    http://gatorhead.wordpress.com/

Unfortunately Bo has a bad ticker and once again suffered a heart attack this week and was airlifted to the hospital.   On his blog he posted this update the other day.

Yesterday I had a heart cath and they found new damage to my heart and that only the main artery to my heart has remained opened.  These arteries have all been bypassed before and there is nothing that can be done  for them.

The Doctor who did the dye test and heart cath wasn’t very optomistic at all  and seems to think that it could be a matter of days, weeks and at the most a few months before my heart gives out completely.   My regular cardiologist is a little more optomistic and seems to think if I am very careful I could hang on for a good bit longer.

In typical Bo fashion he only had a short pity party before being determined to get the most out of life.  And that is where I need your help.

In the next week I want to blow up either/both of Bo’s blogs with hits and comments like he has never seen before.   Being stuck in the hospital sucks so the more interaction we can give him the better.   Please visit his site, share it on your own blogs and share it on Social Media.   Let’s find some new visitors for Bo.

I am determined to keep that heart of his ticking because it is going to be pumping with pride.

    Thanks

  • Mail Bag

Know what happens when you visit other people’s websites?  You tend to win stuff just for commenting.  I am so good at it, that people throw prizes my way.  Ok kidding about that but I did happen to win some contests put on by two friends.

And as luck has it, I got two of those prizes just last week.  First up was some earrings from Bo Lumpkin.   Loyal Bearmaniacs may know Bo from his Gatorhead Webcomic and Bo Lumpkin sites.   Well in the past several months, Bo has realized his talent for making custom jewelry and is becoming a celebrity on the local swap meet circles.   He has been showcasing much of his work on the Bo Lumpkin site.  As the winner of one of Bo’s contests, this is what came in the mail for me.

    Bo Lumpkin Jewelry

Not to be outdone, Oskar van Velden AKA Skar from Mojo Comic also has contests ongoing on his webcomic.   As last months winner I got a custom cartoon of Ben (one of my favorite characters…mainly because he tends to end up the butt of the jokes).   Here is my prize.

Thanks to both of these wonderfully creative guys.   Anyone else want to send me gifts, feel free.

  • Beartoons Shop is NOW OPEN!

    Beartoons Cafepress Shop

So for the past few weeks I have alluded to the fact that I am working on some projects that have kept me from drawing cartoons.  I am happy to say that I have completed one of these projects by creating the Beartoons Shop!!

Way before I ever started drawing cartoons, I created a little store on Cafepress called WackSack.com where I posted images for sale on tshirts, mugs, bags, etc.   Several years later I started Bearman Cartoons and ultimately this site.  As beartoons.com took off, it seemed disjointed to keep pointing people to wacksack.com for my tshirts etc so for the past couple years I have been thinking it was time to rebrand.

And now it has happened.  Cleaned out some of the non selling items out of wacksack and rebranded the store to give it a feel more in line with the website.  You can access it directly at http://cafepress.com/beartoons or as always click on the Shop link at the top.  Thanks for your continued patience.  I’ll have a few more designs in my head that I will be posting in the next several weeks.

  • Is it funnier in your head?

    Lego My Eggo

So I posted this meme called “Lego my Eggo” on Google Plus the other day trying to make a waffle look like a Lego piece.  I think it was funnier in my head than my execution of it.   Ever fail yourself where you think something is hilarious and then you put it down on paper or draw it and you realize it really isn’t that great?

    _____________________________________________________________

Something that is funnier on paper is Joel Poirier’s Stripped Comics.  Joel recently revamped his website to look like a comic book store.  I joked that he needed a Bearman doll on the shelves.

    Stripped Comics Joel Poirier

No doll but he was kind enough to put a sticker on the shelf that actually links back here.  Sadly I have to share company with Aidan Casserly of Scapula (haha j/k Aidan – if you don’t know Scapula go check him out too)

  • The Cartoonist Studio

No I am not taking a day off today.  I decided to try my hand at an actual cartooning contest.  The Cartoonist Studio is having a political cartoon contest with cartoonists submitting their work and weekly someone is kicked off the island.  While they will have their own judges, you can still vote and influence the results.

I’ll be posting there 2x a week on Mondays and Thursdays so as long as I remain in the running my posting schedule will be Mondays and Thursday instead of Sunday/Wednesday.  I bet you didn’t even know I had a regular posting schedule did you?

  • Charity Challenge Guest Comics

Eight, count them eight artists stepped up to include me in either their comics or their guest art during my cartoon challenge.

Can you guess who they are for each of the numbers???   First person to get them all correct will get their choice of tshirt design from my shop WackSack.com.

Because I am nice here is who is represented:  Obscure Gentlemen, Zombie Boy Comics, TWXXD Comics, Adam’s Art, The Tasmanians, Tix Comix, Off Season Comics, Subparker   Now you have to put them in the right order.

UPDATE:  Forgot to include Bo Lumpkins

I am getting senile.  Sorry mind has been elsewhere and I forget Jande’s from Aedre’s Firefly. Here is the video of her redshirt Bearman:
