Ladies and Gentlemen. The man you see pictured above is Nate Fakes. Mad Magazine and Break of Day cartoonist Nate Fakes. And hands down, the worst person in the world for me to try to caricature. If it is the first time or the 20th time trying I can usually get to some semblance of the person even if the end result isn’t flattering (sorry Myra).
But there is nothing distinguishing about this kid. Here are several of my failed attempts. The first being the one that probably looks most like him but the last being my favorite.
So it seems that there are some American comic fanboys upset that an American icon like Superman is being cast by British actor, Henry Cavill. Henry was incredible as Duke of Suffolk, Charles Brandon in the Showtime series (I believe being rerun on BBC), The Tudors. And according to my wife, he is good eye candy so he has that going for him too.
Most of you may not get the “Jersey” line but Henry is actually from the island of Jersey. Not New Jersey, but one of the Channel Islands, part of the Crown Dependencies of Britain. Now here is where it gets confusing for an American. I learned long ago the differences between England, the United Kingdom and Great Britain. For those of you who did not, our friend Duncan recently reposted this video explaining it all. (Take note Friggin Loon. When you steal content from the Mad Hatters, at least give them credit..haha).
Here’s the confusing part for me. Many Americans might call Henry an “English Actor” but he is not from England so he cannot be. Yet, even the UK paper, the Guardian, confuses us even more when they refer to him as such. As in this article saying “As long ago as 2005, the Twilight author, Stephanie Meyer, was talking up Cavill’s abilities: “I feel really passionately about him getting the role,” she said, but the part eventually went to another English actor, Robert Pattinson.
Now that we have determined he is a British actor and not an English one, should either really matter when you are playing an alien who lives in the United States and was co-created by a Canadian?? Then again, would anyone in the UK be upset if an American played James Bond with a decidedly English accent?
Today’s guest cartoon comes from the one and only Nate Fakes of Break of Day Comic (please forgive him that he decided to post his comic on go comics which always tries to do pop ups) and of Nate’s Ramblings.
Now I asked Nate where he got the notion that Bearman had so much gray hair and his reply was that he blew up my avatar and my shading looked like it was actually gray hair. This looks like a normal weekend in my neighborhood though.
BTW, if you love Break of Day but don’t want to “subscribe” to comment, do what I do and follow Break of Day on Facebook and comment there.
As well as my own Editorial Cartoon Caption Contest (still time to enter), there are several friends around the net that are also doing contests.
Jill at Elemental My Dear is holding a contest all month long encouraging readers to use to their own blog to “submit a post that reflects the saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers” in any format you may like such as…photography, poetry, short story, cartoon, etc.” She will link to your posting and give away 3 5×7 photos.
Ken at Rick the Stick is encouraging readers to come up with creative ways to promote his webcomic. I tried my hand at a theme song for Ken (we’ll have to wait and see if Ken ever lets it make the light of day as I need Britney Spears engineer to make me sound good). Contest goes through the 25th of this month and the winner will be tooned as a guest star in the strip.
Samantha of Life’s a Witch is having a one week contest to win copies of her comic collections. Every tweet or comment on her site will earn you easy entries.
Finally, not a contest but Nate is looking for guest cartoonists to take on his adorable characters from Knocking on Heavens Door as Fan Art. I have to clean up my act before I can figure out what to submit.
A month ago I put out a request to webcomic creators to share with us their view of themselves or their comic strip characters at age 100. I won’t be able to comment while deep in other stuff so make sure to give all my guest cartoons the love and support that you never gave me.
First up is Byron Wilkins of 1977 – The Comic. Why is Byron first…well because he was the first to send me something and by now he is wondering whether or not I would actually use it.
1977 explores the madcap life of four friends trying to make it in the Rock biz. The 70’s were all about the Kouchie and the Coochie so don’t click on the link if you are offended by sexual or drug references. Byron says of his creation “The comic is based loosely on my life back in 1977 when I was 20 and eager to be a “rock star” and ended up playing gigs at bars in downstate Illinois (the big time for sure!).”
Byron’s character Bud (hmmm wonder how he got that name) is a 20 year old Chicago native who plays bass in the band. Check out Byron’s site for more folks from the band and be sure to follow his TWITTER updates.
Thanks Byron!
Come back in 2 days for another new guest cartoon from Off Season!! You can also keep up with me via Twitter. (just not now, I am busy I told you)
No your acne is NOT moving. Daily Cartoonist is reporting that Zits, the cartoon by Jerry Scott and Cincinnati’s own Jim Borgman has been animated as “audio comics”
There is a YouTube page set up that you can see them. My only problem is with who does the voices. Jeremy should sound like a teenage kid living with his parents, not a 40 year old with a mortgage.
Just came across the site Comics I don’t Understand. It features different cartoons that the blog author is having trouble catching what the point of the joke is. The most recent post includes the Dinette Set. Funny thing I hardly ever understand that cartoon, yet my dad always thought it was the funniest thing in the world. Am I not old enough yet to get it?
Thankfully the blog writers don’t look at editorial cartoons, or I might make their list one day.
