  • 1000th Twitter Follower

So I hit my 1000th Twitter Follower a few weeks back.  In twitter terms that really means I probably hit 200 legitimate followers once you dump out the pornbots and the “social media experts.”

As I noticed I was getting near, I decided to make a contest where I promised a caricature to the 1000th Twitter follower.  Oh you aren’t following me on Twitter yet and missed out.  Now whose fault is that?  Follow me.

Anyway, I was happy to report that number 1000 is an actual person.  And like 1/2 my readership outside the United States, resides in the UK.  So congratulations Robin, you were number 1000.

    Robin Miller

Not only is Robin a real person but he is also somewhat of a philanthropist.  He spends many waking hours involved in walks, marathons, and ebay auctions all to raise money for the  Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.  Great Ormond is famous for being given the rights to the play Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie.  So check out Robin on Twitter and one his website, Twelveby12 and tell him I said hi.

    Oh…and his caricature.

  • RIP Leslie Nielsen

    Leslie Nielsen Caricature

Leslie Nielsen passed away this week.  Everyone has been quoting his “Don’t call me Shirley” line from Airplane all week but I was more a fan of his Naked Gun series of movies as he was the star.

Imagine a movie where a 50+ year old is the star, he has a hot girlfriend in Priscilla Presley, includes the master of disaster films, George Kennedy, and costared OJ Simpson when the public still loved and admired him.

A few of my favorite lines:

Mimi Du Jour: Is this some kind of bust?
Lt. Frank Drebin (Nielsen): Yes, ma’am, it’s very impressive, but we need to ask you a few questions.

Lt. Frank Drebin (Nielsen): It’s the same old story. Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, girl finds boy, boy forgets girl, boy remembers girl, girl dies in a tragic blimp accident over the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day.

[Jane climbs a ladder as Drebin looks up
Lt. Frank Drebin (Nielsen): Nice beaver!
Jane  [producing a stuffed beaver] Thank you. I just had it stuffed.

    Any other favorites?

  • Duncan Caricature

As promised, the winner of my Facebook fan challenge was Duncan of Madhatters.  Here is the finished piece and here is Duncan in his original glory.

Hope you enjoy it.  Dunc, I’ll have a print out to you later this week.  If there is enough interest, maybe I’ll repeat the contest in the next couple months.

  • WWE Signs

As promised (or threatened), I am posting all of the signs I made for the live WWE Raw taping on Monday night.  I can now say that my work has been seen on worldwide television as they made it all over the telecast (see below for links).

With the exception of Orton and Sheamus, I aimed to focus on those who tend not to have many signs made but who I could guarantee would be there.  Here they are with explanation of who they are for the non-wrestling fans:

    Randy Orton:

Made for the female fans (and held up by a female), Randy’s finishing move is called the RKO. Here is the sign and a shot of him from ringside.

    Randy Orton - RKO ME

    Sheamus:

The first Irish born WWE Champion.  Hated by the crowd and loved by me, he is called the Human Jar of Mayonaisse by fans and fellow wrestlers because of his whiteness as he goes against type and does not spend time in the tanning bed.

    Santino Marella:

Less known for his in ring action and more for his comedic bits, Santino is a fan favorite but you don’t see many signs of his. He wrestled in a match for Thursday nights airing of Superstars so remains to be seen if this sign made it.   There is a group of newbies that go by the name Nexus.  The slogan on the back of their shirts is “You’re either Nexus or against us” ergo:

    Santino Marella Nexus spoof Sign

    Mark Henry:

One of the most underutilized wrestlers today.  Has won the Worlds Strongest Man contest and while he was a “bad guy” was unstoppable.  Now as a “good guy” he is lost in the shuffle.

    Mark Henry Oh Henry Sign

    Michael Cole:

Ringside play by play announcer for the WWE.  Michael tends to get little respect from the WWE universe but I think he is great and wanted him to get his due props.  One of his classic lines during any match is to say “Vintage ______ (fill in wrestler’s name here)”  So I created this:

    WWE Michael Cole Vintage

I then cut out a rectangle and attached a round piece behind it with different wrestlers names so it could be fitting for many different matches.    See what I mean with this image:

WWE Announcer Michael Cole Caricature saying Vintage Cena

(the crowd silhouette, I got as free stock from somewhere but can’t find where I wrote it down.  If someone comes across the source, let me know and I’ll add it)

    On Camera Moments

For an official WWE pic of the Orton sign click here and go to pic number 12 of 17.

For an official WWE pic of the Mark Henry sign click here and go to the last image (number 19) and look behind Edge’s left elbow

See the Mark Henry sign in video action here and go to 1:54.  You’ll see it right behind Edge.

  • Caricature Winner and things I’ve won!

Well the entries have been culled and a winner drawn in my first Caricature contest. The winner was

DUNCAN from MadHatters.  Congratulations to Duncan.  I will soon have his mug in caricature form for the world to enjoy.

In other news I have the recipient of several gifts over the last few months that I wanted to show off.

First was from Jillsy Girl (Formerly Just Jill, formerly YNB) as a prize for one of her many contests.  Check out her incredible photography site. I got to choose my favorite photo and here it is on display on my computer monitor.

Second is an entire printed series of the great Callous Comics by DR (as in medical) Carlo Jose San Juan.  I have it proudly displayed next to my guest cartoon that I did for him a few months ago.

Finally, one of the projects I have been working on during my hiatus was to create some posters for  friends who will be front row at WWE Monday Night Raw.    So maybe if they get on camera, I’ll have my work shown worldwide. (not that it isn’t already) but you know what I mean.  Here is just one of the images I made of fan favorite Randy Orton who has a finishing move called the RKO.   I’ll post more later in the week.

  • Guess Who?

One of my achilles heels is drawing caricatures of actual people. I can whip out an entire cartoon in an hour from start to finish as long as I don’t have identifiable people. Those can take me an hour each just to sketch them out.

Starting to work on a large undertaking and this guy is in it. Let’s see if I came even close. Can you guess who this is????

  • Liz Lomax creates cool Caricature Sculptures

While perusing www.drawn.ca, I came across an entry about Liz Lomax.  Rather than the tradition pen and paper caricature, Liz uses clay figures placed against backgrounds that she adjusts in photoshop for the finished product.    Pretty amazing stuff.    Couldn’t get the video to embed her but you can see a video of her creating Oasis singer Noel Gallagher at:

and you can check out her website with more samples of her work.

    **** UPDATE *****

Didn’t realize Liz had a blog as well so here it is.

  • Tom Richmond Caricature Tutorials

One of my new favorite places on the web is visiting Tom Richmond’s blog. Tom is a freelance illustrator who does a lot of work for Mad Magazine.

I marvel that with his workload he consistently publishes pretty much daily, with tips, news info, and caricatures he has done.

He even has a section where he has highlighted several of his caricature drawing tutorials. Of course even reading his stuff doesn’t make my crap look any better but it definitely helps you look at the drawn image differently. I especially like how he explains the “Law of Constant Mass“.

Whether you enjoy cartooning or enjoy seeing a great cartoonist…check it out.

  • Create Cartoon Characters of Yourself

Hongkiat.com has a great post about 11 different sites that you can visit to create cartoon characters of yourself. My favorites were the South Park Studio and Simpsonize ME (obviously to create your own Simpsons character.

I created a cartoon likeness of a family member and had it made into a photo cake. Regular photos look too cheesy but give your friend/loved one a cake with an cartoon likeness of them and they will love it.
