Editorial Cartoon: Osama Dead Trump wants Proof

Can anyone tell me what joke was repeated over and over on Sunday night?  If you said “Donald Trump is demanding to see Bin Laden’s Death Certificate” you would be right.  Go see for yourself.

In fact, the first time I saw the joke, I thought it would make a cute editorial cartoon.  By the 20th time I saw it, I thought it was a little overdone.  I guess that didn’t stop these editorial cartoonists

The basis of the joke (for the uninformed) is that Donald Trump is toying with running for President.  So his first public act of late has been to join the birthers in their efforts to say that President Barack Obama wasn’t actually born in Hawaii so he shouldn’t have been eligible to be President.  Trump had been calling for Obama’s Birth Certificate.  Of course when Obama did share it, Trump just took credit for being able to put that rumor to rest and allow the country to move on.  Ever the opportunist.

So I thought I would take the joke (which you see in panel one) and go a slightly different route for the punchline.  Did I use an outdated reference with the title “Weekend at Donalds”???

  • Giving Up After Marriage (Cartoon)

    Give Up After Marriage Cartoon

This cartoon was inspired by Sunday’s post regarding the article that said people who have sex or exercise infrequently are more prone to heart attacks.  Of course in Sunday’s toon, I poke fun at the guy.  But I am an equal opportunity offender so thought it was the ladies turn.

The one thing I constantly tell my wife in the years since we got married is:

Thank you for not giving up!

I mean how many women (and men) nab their significant other and after the “I do’s” just stop trying.  Stop taking care of themselves, stop being interested in what the other has to say, and in the case above stop caring whether or not they will scare the crap out of their spouse by how they dress/look.

I worry for the future husband of this Bearmaniac.  I mean if she is going for the mud mask look now on public video, heaven help the future Mr. Blunt Delivery.

Click here to see the video on her blog in full color.   And while you are there, ask her why she doesn’t use the mud on her forehead or upper lip.  She loves those questions.

  • Editorial Cartoon: The Case for More Sex

    Editorial Cartoon: More Sex Please

This editorial cartoon was inspired by recent articles that infrequent sex or exercise can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks.  If you aren’t getting enough and decide to engage in those activities, it could induce a heart attack.

Can you imagine the out of shape guys using this as their new pick up line.  “C’mon baby, you don’t want me to die do you??”

Reminds me of a guy who would ask every woman in the bar if he could get her number whether or not he had a chance with any of them.  When asked why, he said it was law of averages.  1 in 100 would say yes.  I think that guy ended up being pretty good at sales.

  • Editorial Cartoon: Libya

    Editorial Cartoon: Libya

Up until this past weekend, some conservatives have been upset that the United States hasn’t been more proactive militarily with the issues in Libya.   While I abhor the things Ghadafi is doing to his people, why does the responsibility to be the world police always rest on the United States.

Whenever there is military action needed around the world, the United States is always seen as the big bad aggressor in foreign affairs while the UN tends to get bound in ineffective resolutions.  The US is blamed for interfering in affairs of other countries and blamed if they don’t .  As my dad used to say “You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t”.

So for once, the U.S. has decided to take a back seat to the United Nations, fully supporting the efforts but not taking the lead.  I, for one, support that tact.  They have commited fully to the military operation of a no fly zone while allowing Britain and France to take the lead on the resolution.

Now I am sure I will get an earful from my Australian friends but let’s contrast this with the Australian foreign minister, Kevin Rudd.  Like some American Conservatives, Rudd was blaming the G8 nations for inaction yet after the UN Resolution said that there would be no Australian military assistance (though he did pledge humanitarian aid).

The world doesn’t need any more armchair quarterbacks.  (Ok except for me)

  • Editorial Cartoon: Bieber Fever

Editorial Cartoon - Justin Bieber Fan

So it seems a few Belieber’s (Justin Bieber fans) are running amok because their demigod did not win the Best New Artist award at the Grammys (see here for the story and here for 10 of the vilest tweets against Esperanza I could ever read).

Now maybe there is a legitimate gripe that she shouldn’t have even been considered in the category.  However, how long and at what level does an artist have to be on the scene to no longer be considered new.  If new to the previous year, then Justin himself wouldn’t have been eligible since his first album hit in 2009.  And there has been a precedent set anyway.  Back in 1999, Lauryn Hill won after going solo but was already established as part of the Fugees (and Sister Act II).

This isn’t American Idol.  It is not a popularity contest.

You aren’t in seeking reform in the Middle East.  This decision doesn’t truly affect your life in any meaningful way.

Justin isn’t going to marry you.  So please have some decorum.

And while you are disappointed with his loss as a fan, do you really need to threaten someone who had nothing to do with any of the decisions in the first place?  Why don’t you take a lesson from your idol and be gracious in your loss?

  • Guest Cartoon: Aidan Casserly

    Bearman Guest Cartoon: Aidan Casserly

Today’s guest cartoon comes from the multi-talented Aidan Casserly of Scapula fame.   I have a short attention span so I tend to shy away from comics with extended story lines.  But Aidan keeps the humor going in each weekly strip and his artwork is amazing so he has me hooked.

I don’t know why The Bearman doesn’t take hold.  Maybe in a future story, Aidan can write how all this rejection turns him bad (or good).

Last up is George Ford of Addanac City on Sunday.

    Bearman Guest Cartoon: Ken Drab

Today’s guest cartoon comes from new dad Ken Drab of Rick the Stick.  Ken is the only guest cartoonist’s to take on the challenge of replacing his cartoon character with that of a television star.  In this case, Rick takes over the role of B.A. Baracus from Mr T in the A-Team.  For those who didn’t follow the A-Team, B.A. didn’t like to fly so they always had to drug him before going anywhere.  And everyone knows those medallions Mr T wore had to weigh a ton.

Ken is also a branding guru (even better than those who claim to be on twitter) and one of the founding members of a great webcomic resource, The Webcomic Alliance.  Head over there because by now he has posted a critique of Beartoons.  I told him to be brutally honest and he promised not to hold back so I can’t wait to see how I can improve the Beartoons experience for all of you in 2011.

    Bearman Guest Cartoon: Colleen Dick

Today’s homage to the gravatar that is known as Bearman comes from a recent commenter at Beartoons, Colleen Dick of Tix Comix.  Now I only have two problems with this image.  One is the beer gut.  She claims where she comes from anyone over 25 without a beer belly is considered a girly-man.  The other issue is that she thinks I would be drinking PBR.  Now my brand is Avalanche, Fat Tire, Smithwicks, Harp or even Miller Lite.  No Pabst Blue Ribbon, no Red White and Blue and no Natural Light.  Then again, if I wanted a cheap date, those might be OK.

I asked Colleen to explain what Tix Comix is for my readers and she says “Tix Comix chronicles the amazing semi autobiographical adventures of alterego Tix Branco, an introverted multicultural geek musician, as she and her friends confront the daily insanity of real life. Super powers occasionally come into play.”

Thanks Colleen.  Next up is Ken Drab of Rick the Stick.

  • I am a “Shameless” Thief

I have a google alert on “Bearman Cartoons” and “beartoons” just in case anyone gives me a shout out that I was unaware of.   On Monday, I had an alert and  clicked on the link to see this Entry:

    Bearman Cartoons Shamelessly Copies Me.

The Herbert TSA cartoon over at Bearman cartoon is dated November 21, 2010. I published mine November 12. A major political cartoon flagrantly copied me!! By Dr B

The same day a similar comment was posted on the pic (I initially missed it because I don’t tend to look for comments on the pic page but rather the blog page).

So for comparison here are Dr. B’s and my cartoons:

    Editorial Cartoon: TSA Pat Down

Now at first glance you might think “Bearman, you ARE Shameless.  However there are several things that must be corrected in his post.

Shameless – In order to be shameless, there has to be something you should be shameful for and choose to do it anyway.  Because I never saw his cartoon until this week, that would be impossible.   I use google images for reference pictures when I draw celebrities or characters.   Nowhere in the top 100 images of “Herbert, Family Guy” did this image pop up.  In fact, in the past, I have abandoned ideas when similar cartoons showed up in a reference search.

I did a long post on the topic (last year) of how and why several cartoonists coming up with the same idea.  In short  talks about how certain events in the news can drum up similar gags.  September 11 caused many cartoonists to draw the Statue of Libery crying.  Similarly when you think about the TSA potentially hiring creepy guys to perform pat downs, Herbert is on a short list of creepy guys (also to possibly include Ron Jeremy, David Hasselhoff, and the Burger King guy).

Now “shameless” are the people who have been copying my wrestling signs and holding them up at WWE events without plastering my URL all over them to drive  some traffic over here.

Major Cartoon(ist) – I love this adjective but once again doesn’t apply to me.  One might assume that in order to be a “major cartoon(ist)”, I would have to be making some money off this venture.

Artwork – Obviously if you look at his artwork and then mine, There is a BIG difference.  He can draw perspective and I suck at it.

Now to his credit after I responded to his comment here, he did back down and even took the word “shameless” off his post…yet “flagrant” still remains..haha.  Keep up the good work Dr B. and now that I know you are out there, I’ll be stealing crap from you from now own.

  • Editorial Cartoon: Facebook and Email

Editorial Cartoon: Facebook, Email and Privacy

Here is a potential real FAIL for you.  Facebook has announced that they will now offer email service for it’s members allowing you to send emails to people outside your friend list.  With all the controversy surrounding privacy issues with Facebook, I think I’ll take a pass.

What embarrassing things could Facebook reveal to your “friends” if this happened?  C’mon you can tell us; it won’t get past this blog.
