  • Bearman Cartoon: Wizard of Odd

Christopher Smitherman is a former Cincinnati City Council Member and the current President of the local NAACP.  As a public figure (like many others) there are many times that I agree with him and times that I don’t.  But at least I tend to understand what he is saying until I find a recent press release from the NAACP

Huh???? I don’t get it. It starts talking about the budget but then veers off into talking about the Wizard of Oz.

Here is just part of it:

Smitherman says, “Will Mayor Mallory find his ruby slippers click them 3 times and show up at the finance meeting today?”

The Cincinnati NAACP is frustrated that a Scarecrow, a Tinman, and a Cowardly Lion have not been able to find the financial yellow brick road. The Cincinnati NAACP believes that city workers who are laid off deserve severance packages based on their years of service.  “The only hope that City Council has in exercising financial responsibility is in the leadership of Toto.  This means Cincinnati is in big trouble when I am looking for Toto to lead us out of this financial mess.  The Cincinnati NAACP is very concerned that 600 city employees could loose their jobs over the next 12 months and there seems to be no leadership at City Hall for these families.  The City Manager will ask the Wizard of Oz today how he can find $125 million to fund the Cincinnati Pension by January 2010? He will ask the Wizard of Oz how he can find $28 million in 5 months for 2009?  Last but not least he will ask the Wizard of Oz how he can find $40+ million for the 2010 deficit?” Smitherman says.

Was this a reference to something that someone on Council brought up? Who is the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion or Toto? I just didn’t get it…but a couple of lines were just classic enough to make the following cartoon.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Don Vitostein

Matchmaker, Matchmaker make me a match.

Some of you may not have heard but there was a big roundup of conterfeiters, rabbis, politicians and organ smugglers. (see here and here)  It seems one part of this bust was around a group who would find people down on their luck in Israel, give them $10,000, bring them to the US for surgery and then sell the kidney to an American for $160,000.

Under 1984 federal law, it is illegal for anyone to knowingly buy or sell organs for transplant. The practice is illegal just about everywhere else in the world, too.

But demand for kidneys far outstrips the supply, with 4,540 people dying in the U.S. last year while waiting for a kidney, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. As a result, there is a thriving black market for kidneys around the world.

One rabbi was at the forefront while others laundered money from this operation and others through their charities.

Two things come to mind while reading about this.

    1.  Do we allow the open selling of organs?  IE if I have a healthy organ and I want to sell it to make money, it is my body shouldn’t I be allowed?  I say NO.  Just as in this case, there were many “volunteers” who were coerced.  I think it ends up doing more harm than good.

    2.  How could someone who says they are religious get involved in this?  My feeling is that any group you find, there will be the righteous, the average, and the not so righteous.   I don’t care if they are religious or not.  To which some will say that the religious are then hypocrites.  No…you can’t stereotype every religious person based on the actions of a group of them.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Blue Dog Dems

I had never heard the term Blue Dog Democrats used so much until recently.  You would think with a Democratic President and Congress, that anything the President wanted could easily pass.  It seems while President Obama wants to rush through Healthcare reform this group of moderate, fiscal conservative Democrats may be the ones standing in the way as they want any reform to not be a drain on the taxpayers or on the deficit. Thoughts?

  • I am a thief!

Bear with me as I bare my bareless soul in this confession.  It will be a long post but I guarantee both informative and entertaining.

A few days ago in my post about my guest cartoon at CockNBull Webcomic, I lamented that I unbeknowingly stole the  the idea.  Here is what I said:

Tonight or tomorrow, I will tell the story of shame that I have for not realizing until I looked at it again last week, that I had lifted the idea from someone who is bright, talented, good looking, and a hero to us all.  I will put up my apology then.

Bonus points if you know who and what cartoon.

Well no one gathered to make a guess.  Oh, I know George Ford (of Addanac City fame) was all aglow as he clicked on the link to the comic at CockNBull thinking he was the unfortunate soul who was robbed of his intellectual property.  But of course he was wrong and never came back.  It would not have been the first time Mr Ford has called me out because just a week ago after posting this cartoon:

He sent me the following email (I deleted all the nice things he wrote for effect):

Unh-huh. Plagiarism, scandal, and libel! I see how you roll, Mr. Man.

I was reading your cartoon on the newspaper industry and it reminded me of this:

    http://addanaccity.com/wordpress/index.php/2009/04/12/in-the-news/

But you will be getting an email from my lawyer. 🙂

    To which I responded:

Then again, I looked at the link and there were no comments.  Now you might say you lost all your comments when you switched over to hosting on comicpress but I say if a cartoonists draws something and noone comments does it count?

Some have said that George has been rehashing jokes that were written as far back as the pyramids of Egypt.  Don’t believe me, check out his site today (then check it out tomorrow, and again for about 200 days after that).  Oh and make sure you leave a comment on the site….he really hates when people do that.

Anyway, I am digressing more than Brit at Blunt Delivery in trying to tell this story.

Comic Strip and editorial cartoonists have been doing the same bits as each other for decades.  Bill of Comics I don’t Understand refers to two comic strip cartoonists doing the same gag in the same day as “Synchronicity”   Daryl Cagle uses the term “Yahtzee” to refer to times when five or more editorial cartoonists draw the same gag.  In this article he says:

Sometimes the symbols of current events are so obvious that a number of editorial cartoonists end up drawing roughly the same cartoon, Cagle said. For instance, in the wake of 9/11 many cartoonists drew the Statue of Liberty weeping. Several drew police and firemen raising an American flag on the smoldering pile of World Trade Center wreckage, with a profile evoking the Iwo Jima Memorial. Another gaggle of strikingly similar cartoons depicted a policeman and a fireman standing side by side as the “real twin towers of New York City.”

The similarities of “Yahtzee” cartoons also stem from the fact that “most cartoonists are liberal, 50-year-old white males,” said Cagle, noting that the newspaper industry hasn’t created any new cartoonist jobs in the past 20 years.

Thankfully I am a moderate not close to 50 so I don’t fall into that group.  But as I started out my post, I have been both a culprit and a victim of gag theft.  WHAT, you say?  Yes, I stole the idea for my gag, FROM ME.  When I drew the guest cartoon for CockNBull, I thought it was a funny original idea that played well with the characters.  Here it is:

Last week Arnie at CockNBull.net asked me to reemail my guest cartoon because he misplaced it. Right after I did, I got a sinking feeling because it dawned on me that I had recently done almost the same exact gag for my Fallen Princesses post.

The really sad part is that I drew these two cartoons exactly 10 days apart…right down to the innocent eye roll of both Bull and Fiona. I am blaming early onset Alzheimers.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Shrinking Newspapers

Editorial Cartoonists continue to mourn when another newspaper cuts its editorial cartoonist.  However, the rest of the newsroom is not immune to layoffs.  It was announced this week that the Cincinnati Enquirer is cutting over 100 jobs while Gannet is cutting 1400 nationwide (see here).

What makes it even stranger is that I didn’t see this story at the Cincinnati Beacon until after I drew the latest editorial cartoon.  It seems in order to save space (or try to appear more national) The Cincinnati Enquirer masthead is now simply “The Enquirer”.  More reason to save space when converting to this format:

  • Bearman Cartoon: Real Reason Palin Quit

Sarah Palin announced she is quitting her Governorship of the state of Alaska. Even after supposedly explaining her reasons, no one can figure it out. No one but of course ME.

This editorial cartoon gives you a peek inside her head and shows the real reason Sarah is quitting.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Michael Jackson & Farrah Fawcett

Most of you know I tend not to take shortcuts and put real images in my cartoons…yet drawing these iconic posters would not have created the impact I wanted.

I also struggled with how to caption this. In the end I went with just the title “Lost Youth”. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if it refers to losing two icons too young or the guy in the cartoon is lamenting his own lost youth.

I find it strange though that as we lose the stars of our own youth that it does reinforce you don’t get any younger. I just wonder when I will turn into my parents whereby the first thing I go to in the paper is the obituary section to see if anyone I know has passed away.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Jon and Kate Divorce

I have said before how much we love to build up the lowly, the underprivileged, or those who’s story touches our heart. But the minute they reach the point where they have something we don’t, it’s time to jump on the hate bandwagon.

Now in the case of Jon and Kate Gosselin, I think some of the recent stuff was brought on by themselves. In their attempt to show normalcy on the show, it only fueled the paparazzi rigor to get the real story. Had they announced their separation several months ago, I am not sure they would have had all the media hounds that they have as of late.

So I bring you in honor of their impending divorce proceedings the new editorial cartoon showing TLC’s new show while Jon and Kate plus Eight (the eight being the kids) is on a hiatus.
