  • Coffee, Tea or Depends

I worked on this editorial cartoon before I read that they are pulling back on the regulations but it still is a harsh reminder of how the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) can have a knee jerk reaction.

After the failed terror attempt on a Northwest Flight last week the following regulations went into effect for international flights:

  • Limiting international passengers to a single carry-on bag
  • Second-round security checks, including manual pat downs and body searches
  • On certain flights, disabling the map showing the plane’s progress and location
  • Prohibiting passengers from having blankets or pillows in their laps for the last hour of the flight
  • Requiring passengers to remain seated for the last hour of the flight
  • Now I have no problem with any of those things to promote security EXCEPT for the last one.  It is at the point in  the flight that they say I can’t get up for the bathroom, that I tend to always have to go.  There were domestic flights that I took after 9/11 that they told us we would not be able to get up during the flight (less than 2 hours) so we had better go to the bathroom before boarding.  Of course that was after I chugged a bottle of water.

When those of us with weak bladders and spastic colons are hindered in our ability to go when needed, then and only then have the terrorists really won.

  • Guest Cartoon: Calamities of Nature

Head over to Tony Piro’s Calamities of Nature to see my guest cartoon that I did for his contest.  My topic was about 2012 and the end of the Mayan Calendar.

I wasn’t a winner by a long shot but Tony felt shamed into posting my cartoon anyway since I took the time to enter.  🙂

I’ll post it here in a few days.

    ALSO

I don’t know how she found it but Midwest Mom over at hmmm-sweet-splendid-wisdom has found a picture of me and posted it on her site.  Go check it out here.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Free Mammograms

Continuing the theme this week of fighting cancer. In the United States a government panel has determined that mammograms to screen for breast cancer in women statistically won’t do much good when the patient is under 50. Historically, it has been recommended that women 40 and above get yearly mammograms. Thus began the controversy as to whether or not insurance companies would continue to pay for the procedure.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Obama bows to Emperor

It seems the masses are all in an uproar about President Barack Obama bowing a greeting to Japanese Emperor Akihito.  So I have gathered the top 5 reasons Obama did this so you people can get over it.   The last reason is todays editorial cartoon.

    1. He is so tall and Akihito so short, that he HAD to bend down to reach Akihito’s hand.
    2. He got confused by the famous international etiquette book Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands that he tried to do all three at once.
    3. He made the Emperor feel superior on purpose.  How many of you wouldn’t grovel to someone you want to lend money to you or invest in your business(es)?
    4. Friday’s basketball game with the White House motor pool caused his back to go out.

    AND NUMBER 5….

  • Bearman Cartoon: Harry Reid

For my out of country readers a little background on the editorial cartoon below.

    – President Obama wants a Healthcare Reform Bill passed
    – Many Republicans and some moderate Dems don’t want to include a so called Public Option (whereby people can buy insurance from the government) for fear of the long term costs.
    – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid introduced a version of the Healthcare Bill that includes a State by State opt out solution. This caused Olympia Snowe, the lone Republican who supported the commitee plan to publicly back out of her support as well as some others.

The biggest issue IMO is that the two largest areas of concern are those who want insurance who can’t get it at a reasonable rate and those who can’t withstand a major catastrophe. Now I am not economist but couldn’t the government put out a bid much like a large company for insurance companies to offer them group rates. Individuals without a company plan could get this corporate rate rather than expensive COBRA or the like. Then the government could offer a “public option” to those wanting catastrophic insurance such that it would kick in when medical bills reached a certain percent of yearly gross income.
