  • The Incredible Observations of Bearman – Sun Chips

USA Today is reporting that Frito-Lay is dumping that noisy Sun Chips bag on all flavors except the original.  Finally accepting defeat in what I predicted (and cartooned) would turn out to hurt sales.

Sales are down 11%. And some environmentalists “hate” us for not putting up with a little noise.  But companies should NOT expect people who are interested in helping the environment to have to put up with a shoddy design.  They should do better – As it seems Boulder Canyon has done with their chip bag.

When will the world come to me first for advice on these things before spending so much money?

Hat Tip to Crunch Gear for the original heads up.

  • Caricature Winner and things I’ve won!

Well the entries have been culled and a winner drawn in my first Caricature contest. The winner was

DUNCAN from MadHatters.  Congratulations to Duncan.  I will soon have his mug in caricature form for the world to enjoy.

In other news I have the recipient of several gifts over the last few months that I wanted to show off.

First was from Jillsy Girl (Formerly Just Jill, formerly YNB) as a prize for one of her many contests.  Check out her incredible photography site. I got to choose my favorite photo and here it is on display on my computer monitor.

Second is an entire printed series of the great Callous Comics by DR (as in medical) Carlo Jose San Juan.  I have it proudly displayed next to my guest cartoon that I did for him a few months ago.

Finally, one of the projects I have been working on during my hiatus was to create some posters for  friends who will be front row at WWE Monday Night Raw.    So maybe if they get on camera, I’ll have my work shown worldwide. (not that it isn’t already) but you know what I mean.  Here is just one of the images I made of fan favorite Randy Orton who has a finishing move called the RKO.   I’ll post more later in the week.

    Randy Orton - RKO ME

  • Win a Free Caricature!

Got some work and personal stuff going on the next week or so, therefore it is time again for a contest.

    WHEN:
Now until noon US Eastern Time on Sunday September 12.

    WHAT:
Get yourself and as many of your friends on facebook to go to my facebook fan page (http://facebook.com/beartoons) and hit that “Like” button and then tell me that they are now following me because of you.  They can tell me via this post or via facebook.  You can also just click the “like” button on the Facebook widget on the right.

For every person that is added as a fan (including yourself) and credits you will earn you an entry into the drawing.  And for those already a fan…no you cannot unlike me and then like me to earn another entry.

    HOW:
Use your blog, facebook, twitter and get the word out.  For example you might post on facebook.

I want to win a caricature of myself.  So do me a favor and go to http://facebook.com/beartoons and hit the “like” button and tell Bearman I sent you.

    PRIZE:
Your choice of either a  caricature of your face (or someone elses) or select your favorite design from the store and I send you a t-shirt.

I will select at least one winner (assuming I get at least one more fan).  I’ll have two winners if the number of fans goes over 175 and three if it goes over 200.

    CAVEAT:
    a.  The caricature, if chosen, will be a 8×10 image of your head only and will be in my style so…
    b.  It may look like you, it might not.  Depends on what you look like.  I make no promises that I won’t make you uglier or better looking than you actually are.

I’ll be online some but not posting again until I announce the winner.  I’ll make comments here when I can and try to make my usual blog rounds on occassion.

    Good luck.

UPDATE:  Blog about this on your site and I’ll throw in another entry.  Just let me know in the comments if you do.

  • Twelve-Way with Cheese Released

    12 Way with Cheese

Cincinnati has a different way of serving up Chili.  Instead of the chunks of meat found in other cities around the globe, Cincinnati chili is ground fine (like taco meat size) and usually has cinammon or chocolate in the ingredients.  Moreover, it is served over thin spaghetti.  A 3-way is Chili, Spaghetti and Cheese.  A 4-way adds onions or beans and a 5-way adds both.  Different foods blended together to make a great meal.

Well now several of the regulars at the Cincinnati Illustrators Blog who get together weekly to exchange horror stories and share work have come up with a Twelve-Way.  No you can’t eat it.  This group of editorial cartoonists (no not me), greeting card and magazine illustrators, and animators have created a humorous anthology showcasing each of their work in off-beat ways.  And like its chili counterpart, it comes together as one great taste.   The stories are woven together by a Crypt Keeper of sorts (a zombified Marge Schott – the deceased outspoken former owner of the Cincinnati Reds).

Check out the article from CityBeat, the local alt newspaper and buy the complete full color 112 page book online at ComixPress for only $20.

  • Bearman Charity Challenge 2010

It’s back!!  Last year, thanks to your efforts you cost me $336 to charity.  Once again I am issuing a challenge and this year I am going for $1000.

This year the first $500 raised will once again go to the Cincinnati FreeStore Foodbank.  This charity does great things not only to feed those in need but also to help families get back on their feet in other ways.  The need is great this time of year because people tend to donate more during the holidays.

Anything donated above $500 to the max $1000 will go to support the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati in their fundraising efforts.

I am issuing this challenge to help raise money.  I will donate the indicated amount for each thing that you do in the month of May:

    • $10 – For the first 20 cartoonists who send in a guest cartoon (see below for what I am looking for).
    • $5 – Add http://beartoons.com to your blog roll  (for those who don’t already have it)
    • $5 – Add a Bearman Cartoons Banner Ad (found here) on your site or if you already have one upgrade to a larger size.
    • $5 $10 – Blog about my challenge to your readers and link back to this entry in your post – http://beartoons.com/2010/05/03/bearman-charity-challenge-2010
    • $5 – Send a picture of yourself wearing a t-shirt from our shopOR send a picture that showcases that you are a BEARMANiac.  Photos will be showcased in weekly updates and also appear ongoing in the BEARMANia section.
    • $2 – Follow me via TWITTER updates. (if you aren’t already)
    • $2 – Become a fan/like Beartoons on Facebook.

If you add me to your blog roll, add/upgrade your banner, include this challenge in a post, or start following me via twitter/facebook because of this post please indicate in the comments.

I’ll post a weekly update of the money raised and who did what to raise the money with links back to your site if applicable.

Call for Cartoonists to provide Guest Cartoons

Taking some time off in June so looking for guest cartoons to fill the void.  Obviously I don’t have recurring characters but last years call to highlight your characters in new ways was well received.  So here is the challenge.  Replace the actor(s) in your favorite movie/television show with one or more of your characters.  Submissions can take the form of fake posters, single panel or strip.  Keep submissions within 600 pixels wide.  Here is just one example from the Family Guy (obviously doesn’t need to be that in depth).   If you need inspiration, check out my recent post on recreating 35 famous movie posters.

    Thanks for your continued support.
