Editorial Cartoon: Bully Paybacks

Editorial Cartoon: Donating to Bullying Victims

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest continues and I made it to week THREE!  Thanks to all for voting.  Click the image above or here to go to the voting.  You should do a search of “Bearman” and my cartoon will come up front and center and then vote.  Some people were clicking the link and then accidentally voting on the first thing that popped up.  Unfortunately no way to direct link to my cartoon.  Again, as long as I stay in the contest, there will be two editorial cartoons a week to vote on – Mondays and Thursdays.   Oh and you can vote multiple times in each round if you want (resets every six hours) until EOD Saturday.

Special shout out to Red at Momma’s Money Matters who has worked her butt off to get me votes from her friends/followers.

Today’s editorial cartoon is inspired by everyone’s favorite bus monitor, Karen Klein.  Oh you haven’t seen the video of her getting bullied relentlessly by little shits?  Here it is but be warned the language is harsh and your blood pressure may rise.

And the web reacted.  Someone started a campaign on Indiegogo to raise $10,000 for Karen to be able to go on a vacation.  As of today’s posting there is currently $664,398 donated.  And Southwest Airlines offered to send her and 9 guests to Disneyland for a 3 day vacation.  So of course the haters have to come out.   Questions about whether as a bus monitor she was effective at her job.  And more importantly, I predict you will now see this victim mentality that I ought to get compensated grossly for any wrong done to me.  Hey Karen got hers, why can’t I get mine.

I also predict there will be some people that start staging sympathy videos in hopes of getting money.  But I am a pessimist when it comes to people doing the right thing.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but when I was in grade school, there was a huge paddle in the principals office ready for any of us who misbehaved. These days, a teachers just SAYS something wrong to a misbehaving kid and they get fired. These little brats are all spoiled and that’s what leads to stuff like what happened on the bus. Anyhow, that’s my two cents (or three if you can find any loose change under the couch cushion).

  2. nursemyra says:

Good lord – the video is 10 minutes long. who’s got time to watch that? i made time to vote for you though bearman.

  3. My answer to children under 15 who are out of control is to exclude them from school and slap a HUGE fine on their parents. Imagine if you could no longer just pack little Brutus off to state-sponsored babysitting so you could cook your meth (or whatever the parents of these little shits do) without him getting in the way. When I was a sub teacher sometimes kids tried getting started on that kind of stuff. At least I was able to send the ringleaders to detention before they infected the whole class. Not that detention actually does anything. On a bus you can’t really do that. I have bad memories of riding a school bus for years with a gang of bullies. Luckily I wasn’t the target of their bullying. They sniped and sniped at one of our drivers until he quit. Apparently they thought the other one was cool so they left him alone. And when the “uncool” driver quit they started in on this little fat girl and when the girl’s mom found out she drove her daughter to school an hour early every day (the mom worked a nursing shift that started at 7) and I remember seeing that girl standing out there every day in all kinds of weather waiting for the school to open.

At least exclude them from the bus…one.

I remember always being a little shit with subs. Nothing too mean. But everyone at 1:47 will fall out of their chairs.

I am all for public beatings as well. Nothing permanent or anything. Just a good whack or two.

  4. I rode a School Bus for twelve years so I was probably too depressed to notice much of the bullying I was receiving.
    🙂

  5. I think it is awesome that people got together to help her out. If others are able to pull it off good for them, But I don’t see this as an everyday thing that will continue.

  6. lisleman says:

that much money – yes the copycats will be coming out strong. Terrible stuff to be subjected to but collecting over $600 K – It sure makes me wonder.

    Great cartoon.

  7. Comedy Plus says:

I’d like to see what happens, or doesn’t happen to the bullies. As for Karen? Good on her to get so many donations. What those little creeps did was more than awful.

    Have a terrific day. 🙂

  8. Red says:

Love this editorial! It is a quintessential classic. (In case you have not read my header on my wall yet.) Thank you for the shout out! If I can help you win, that is what counts.

I rode the bus, but we had to pay $750/year (back when money was worth more than 25/100). You can bet your bottom dollar our parents made sure we did not get thrown off the bus.

    Red.

    • Bearman says:

If I win, I’ll owe you another tshirt.

Thankfully I didn’t have to ride the bus until HS. We walked (or rode bikes) to elementary school which was about 1 1/2 miles away (uphill both ways)

      • Jande says:

Heh. My 2+1/2 mile walk to school WAS uphill both ways. There was a deep valley between our house and the town. ( of course that made it downhill both ways, too.)

I guess I was smarter than I realised in those days. Nothing would enduce me to voluntarily climb on that bus full of bullies. I hoofed it gratefully, but was always ashamed of being such a wuss.

  9. starla says:

I think Navar talks about getting his nuckles wacked by a ruler from a teacher. I’ll have to ask him I know he has a few stories about teachers being rough with him. I went over and voted. Great cartoon.

  10. Deb says:

I only had to ride the bus for 7th and 8th grade, never had any trouble.
I didn’t have time to watch the video, but heard all about it on the news.
What I did do was vote for you, Bearman…always! 🙂 😉

  11. AnnaBaileyPopejoy says:

In my days of riding the school bus anyone acting like this would have been kicked off, parents were notified and they lost the privilege of riding the school bus for an allotted period of time (depending on the offence). This meant that the offender either walked the 7 miles to school or the parents had to furnish transportation. It didn’t take long to figure out what was tolerated and what was not aboard the bus. The parents wrath was harder to face than the humiliation of being kicked off the bus.
Since this incident was recent & late in the school year….I see this situation being as much the fault of the Bus Monitor as it was with the kids involved. She obviously was lax in enforcing ground rules for types of behavior that were required of the bus riders so she wasn’t doing her job. Her situation is not new to the planet, why so many jumped on the band wagon & donated to this cause is beyond me. I’ve seen worse, have suffered worse, pulled up my little girl panties and went on with my day. Enough said!

    • Bearman says:

Thanks for stopping by Anna. IN her defense, I am not sure what her role is. I heard that she was there for the special needs kids making sure they got on and off the bus. I don’t think it was her job to control all the kids. Again though not sure.

I believe each of these kids was banned from the bus for all of next school year.

  12. Friggin Loon says:

    Pity cash you say? Hmm……..

  13. Friggin Loon says:

Sorry for my tardiness , wandered off to vote and got lost 😯

  14. Tony McGurk says:

I feel a mix of pity for that poor woman & outright rage that makes me wanna snot the smart mouth little mongrel scum.

The big problem today is that the law says we can’t touch the little dears & they know it. If the law didn’t protect them as much as it does for their bad behaviour their’d be a lot of bleeding teenager’s faces around.

I got abused by some teen jerkoff once as I was walking down the street for no apparent reason. I walked up to him & told him to say it to my face rather than from across the road. He then proceeded to tell me to go get f… Damn I wanted to flatten the little p… so badly, but knew I’d be in more trouble with the law than the pleasure of snotting him would be worth.

A bloke I knew in the Navy years ago took the law into his own hands when a group of teens made vulgar remarks about his wife. He said “What did you say?” so the ringleader repeated it. He picked him up by the throat & slammed the moron up against a shop window then punched his lights out, he was a big bloke too & I wouldn’t have liked to get hit by him. They followed him home from a safe distance & once they knew where he lived went to the cops. He ended up in court with an assault charge, a hefty fine & a 6 month good behaviour bond.

OK now I need to have let my blood pressure drop….
Voted for ya too by the way.

    • Bearman says:

It is a sad state that you can’t protect yourself anymore. Though I am better with my tongue than I am with my fists so I could have probably taken them.

  15. Tony McGurk says:

    Oh another story…
I saw a bloke take vengeance on a bunch of teenagers once on a train in Sydney. He was an Asian man sitting half a dozen seats back from these kids who were making racist fun of an Asian woman. Next thing he gets up, walks towards them & backhands the nearest one across the head & knocked him out of his seat & across the train aisle. Then he asked “Who’s next???” Then he sat in the seat behind them. None of them made a sound for the rest of the trip but just sat there like trembling little mice. Too bad people can’t take action like this more often without fear of legal reprisal.

  16. Raging hormones + mob mentality + easy target + video taping = little shits.

    • Bearman says:

Mob mentality is the big culprit. My nephew did something stupid because of his little shit friends recently. No bullying but stupid none the less.

  17. Mark Stokes says:

Staging sympathy videos? You BET they will. Making some great points here, Bearman! Your paws are sharp as ever!

  18. Where were the video cameras when I was bullied. Send me money, y’all!

  19. Jande says:

This brought back some painfull memories. I couldn’t watch more than ten seconds of it. I imagine that the people donating to indiegogo on her behalf had similar feelings, having been there themselves. I’m glad she’s being compensated. The best revenge is living well.

  20. Jande says:

Just realised it was one of the jeering kids who took the video. Duh! Guess that all the buzz around bullying lately has given some kids ideas for a perceived opportunity to make a name for themselves. Five minutes of infamy.

  21. Tyler says:

I’m sure getting pummeled would be a youtube sensation too! Tough break, kid.

  22. Scott says:

I don’t see any point in compensating her financially for what was done. That’s not going to solve the problem. Expelling the little bastards, and perhaps even sending them to juvenile detention might–if it’s done more often. The reason this goes on is that teachers and school administrators are not allowed to discipline students–it’s that simple.

    • Bearman says:

True but I think compensating her is a separate issue. It was the school board or the state giving her the money. It was people on the net donating who felt bad for her.

  23. G. B. Miller says:

Just wanted to stop by and say that your cartoons for the contest have been pretty good and let you know that I am still alive and kicking.

Not kicking bullies’s collective asses, but coming pretty damn close.

It’s funny, but these snot nose little punks’s parents still win in the long run, as the school system still has to pay for their education by providing tutors for them for the next school year.

  24. DadaHyena says:

I can’t speak for Karen or any of the other people in the videos out there, but I will say that I was bullied non-stop as a child, both at school and at home, and never got any “pity money” or even any pity. It’s just part of life, learning how to deal with the assholes of the world, and while that doesn’t mean I approve of bullying in the least it’s also something that a person pretty much needs to learn how to handle on their own. The pity money really doesn’t solve that problem.

    • Bearman says:

How about a pity party. It may be too late but I would be happy to throw you one.

I am not sure kids learn it so well. They grow up thinking they are always right so when someone disturbs that viewpoint it throws them. On the other hand there can be bullying that happens and you are afraid of reacting so we need to keep the bullies in check.

  25. Jande says:

Oh, sorry, Bearman, I got so caught up in this one I forgot to say that I thought your cartoon for this was excellent!

  26. Jenn says:

WOW this really struck a nerve with me when I saw this a few weeks ago, it is appalling, I couldn’t even finish watching the video. Wonderful comic, really lighthearted in the midst of something so cruel and sad.

  27. Lynn says:

I had time to watch the entire video- in disbelief of the horrific things kids say to an adult. It occured to me that they kept saying the same thing in different ways. “She’s fat, has no money, has ugly clothes, has no family”. These kids are saying more aboout themselves than they are of her, it’s obvious they have had bad parenting. So painful to watch this sort of thing. I never liked it when I saw it in school either- we all knew it went on and we can probably all pinpoint those people at our school reunions. In spite of this incident, there are a lot of good kids who don’t act this way and they’ll remember the ones who did.. karma is a bitch. Meanwhile this poor woman suffered, I hate that.
