Editorial Cartoon: Democrats and Justice Roberts

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest continues and I made it to week THREE!  Thanks to all for voting.  Click the image above or here to go to the voting.  You should do a search of “Bearman” and my cartoon will come up front and center and then vote.  Some people were clicking the link and then accidentally voting on the first thing that popped up.  Unfortunately no way to direct link to my cartoon.  Again, as long as I stay in the contest, there will be two editorial cartoons a week to vote on – Mondays and Thursdays.   Oh and you can vote multiple times in each round if you want (resets every six hours) until EOD Tuesday.

Today’s editorial cartoon is in honor of Chief Justice John Roberts.  Seems ever since he has been nominated to the Supreme Court, Democrats have chastised Roberts for being a right winger.  There was even speculation during President Obama’s Inauguration that Roberts purposefully flubbed the lines Obama was reciting during his Oath of Office.

Well last week Justice Roberts shocked both sides of the spectrum when he joined his more liberal justices in upholding what is affectionately been known as ObamaCare.  Now Democrats are going to have to reevaluate their thoughts on the Chief.

  • Obama is Moving “FORWARD”

    Bearman Cartoon Obama Forward Slogan

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest has begun.  Click the link or here to go to the voting.  They are in alphabetical order and my entry should be the third one. So if you can, please vote. It looks like I have some great competition.  As long as I stay in the contest, there will be two editorial cartoons a week to vote on – Mondays and Thursdays.

Regarding today’s editorial cartoon, it seems President Barack Obama has decided to change (haha) his campaign slogan from “CHANGE” to “FORWARD”.  Like many Americans some of his policies I agree with and some I don’t.  So the question is which way are we going forward and even if it is the right direction are we still constrained by our present issues that haven’t been dealt with?  Sometimes we look too far ahead without realizing what is holding us back.

  • Conservatives and Romney

    Editorial Cartoons: Conservatives and Romney

With today’s editorial cartoon, I have no doubts that a conservative would never vote for Obama to spite Romney.  However it is true that many conservative groups are calling on him to move to the right or lose their support.  So isn’t that really the same thing?  Tony Perkins (no not the actor), of the conservative group Family Research Council said this:  “And so if the party is moving in a different direction, we are not going there.  The only reason there was an alignment with Rick Santorum from our constituency is because Rick embraced the ideas, the policies and the principles that our organization and our constituency believes in…If they don’t, they’re not going to get the unbridled enthusiastic support that Rick Santorum enjoys.

So maybe they don’t vote for Obama but more likely just don’t vote.  If you have choice between supporting a guy who agrees with 50% of your beliefs versus one that supports 0% (obvious exaggeration), wouldn’t the logical thing to do is try to get something out of it?  Or do you enjoy bitching about the country for another 4 years?  I guess I will never understand the mindset of the far left/right.

On a different but not necessarily lighter note, I did a caricature tribute to Dick Clark this week.  New Years Eve won’t be the same without you (and please no Mayan jokes…I have heard them in every form the last week. haha)

  • Editorial Cartoon: Obama and Reagan

Editorial Cartoon: Obama and Reagan on Taxing the Rich

So my last politically inspired cartoon poked fun at the Republicans so now it is the Democrats turn.  Time and time again I see Democrats invoking the spirit of Ronald Reagan to shame Republicans into agreeing with their policies.  Somehow Reagan has turned from representing all things evil with Conservatives to the voice of an elder (albeit deceased) elder statesman.

Recently President Barack Obama invoked a quote from Reagan to defend the Buffet Rule (a plan to up the tax on the rich) calling Reagan (gasp) “a socialist” compared to the ‘Republicans of today.  At the same time he said “Trickle Down Economics” didn’t work…a phrase that was the basis of the Reagan plan.

The difference is how they are looking to go about it.  Obama wants to raise tax on the über rich…something the majority of Americans will get behind simply because it doesn’t affect them.  However, what Reagan wanted to do was similar to all Republican platforms generally and fight to reduce taxes.  I am not one of those people that clamors for tax deductions.  I think they are a necessary part of living in an advanced society.  However, I hate it when my tax money is wasted because of politics that both sides tend to partake in.

AND, I agree with Reagan that the key isn’t to just raise taxes on the rich.  It is to remove all the tax loopholes that seem to be available to the rich such that people like Warren Buffet pays less as a percent of income than his secretary.  Hilarious that Buffet will make that point but still take advantage of those loopholes himself.  Simplify the tax code, get rid of the loopholes that seem to pop up and we won’t need to worry so much about whose taxes should be raised or not.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Obama bows to Emperor

It seems the masses are all in an uproar about President Barack Obama bowing a greeting to Japanese Emperor Akihito.  So I have gathered the top 5 reasons Obama did this so you people can get over it.   The last reason is todays editorial cartoon.

    1. He is so tall and Akihito so short, that he HAD to bend down to reach Akihito’s hand.
    2. He got confused by the famous international etiquette book Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands that he tried to do all three at once.
    3. He made the Emperor feel superior on purpose.  How many of you wouldn’t grovel to someone you want to lend money to you or invest in your business(es)?
    4. Friday’s basketball game with the White House motor pool caused his back to go out.

    AND NUMBER 5….

  • Retro Cartoon: Campaign Promises

I did this editorial cartoon about 2 years ago after an election. In the states, the landscape is cluttered with yard signs that promote candidates and issues in the month leading up to the election. While the volunteers are quick to put up the signs they are slow to remove them.

Locally we have laws that say you can’t put the signs on public property, yet no one pays any attention to that because there really isn’t a penalty for violating it.

So be a good citizen and clean up your campaign yard signs, recycle them and please STOP recycling your campaign promises. I am sure the Tea Party folks would love if I had made the sign an Obama one.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Obama wins Peace Prize?

My friends on the right at Big Hollywood and also on the left at the Cincinnati Beacon are a flutter about President Barack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize.  Seems the President himself was a little confused as he is only the third US President to win while in office.  Maybe he just misunderstood the call.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Blue Dog Dems

I had never heard the term Blue Dog Democrats used so much until recently.  You would think with a Democratic President and Congress, that anything the President wanted could easily pass.  It seems while President Obama wants to rush through Healthcare reform this group of moderate, fiscal conservative Democrats may be the ones standing in the way as they want any reform to not be a drain on the taxpayers or on the deficit. Thoughts?

  • Twitter screws up your relationships

See if my previous post wasn’t enough…USA Today has an article in todays paper talking about how people rely too much on social networks like Twitter and Facebook while ignoring the people sitting right in front of them.

    I love the line:

As it turns out, some celebrity Twitterers — Britney Spears, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Barack Obama — have hired ghostwriters to supply their tweets because they’re just too busy

Come on!  Really!  Are you that impressed with yourself that you need someone else to make your life sound more interesting than it is.  Read the article here.
