Editorial Cartoon: Democrats and Justice Roberts

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest continues and I made it to week THREE!  Thanks to all for voting.  Click the image above or here to go to the voting.  You should do a search of “Bearman” and my cartoon will come up front and center and then vote.  Some people were clicking the link and then accidentally voting on the first thing that popped up.  Unfortunately no way to direct link to my cartoon.  Again, as long as I stay in the contest, there will be two editorial cartoons a week to vote on – Mondays and Thursdays.   Oh and you can vote multiple times in each round if you want (resets every six hours) until EOD Tuesday.

    __________________________________________________________________________

Today’s editorial cartoon is in honor of Chief Justice John Roberts.  Seems ever since he has been nominated to the Supreme Court, Democrats have chastised Roberts for being a right winger.  There was even speculation during President Obama’s Inauguration that Roberts purposefully flubbed the lines Obama was reciting during his Oath of Office.

Well last week Justice Roberts shocked both sides of the spectrum when he joined his more liberal justices in upholding what is affectionately been known as ObamaCare.  Now Democrats are going to have to reevaluate their thoughts on the Chief.

Editorial Cartoon: Republicans and Democrats in My pants

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest continues and I made it to week TWO!

This editorial cartoon is timely as we heat up all the rhetoric that is going to happen during the campaign.  Those of you who know me know I am a moderate who one day will poke fun at the left and another at the right.  Today you get a two for one.  Whether Democrat or Republican they both are interested in what I have in my pants and what I am doing with it.  Democrats are always after our money and Republicans are always interested in what we are doing with our bodies (gay marriage, abortion, sex in general).  Ok to be honest I too am completely against abortion BUT that doesn’t mean I am prepared to completely ban it either.  Good thing I don’t run for office because they would say I was wishy washy.

And sorry I haven’t been around to other sites this past week.  On vacation so am limited to how much I can surf.

Thanks again for all the votes last week.

  • The Cartoonist Studio

No I am not taking a day off today.  I decided to try my hand at an actual cartooning contest.  The Cartoonist Studio is having a political cartoon contest with cartoonists submitting their work and weekly someone is kicked off the island.  While they will have their own judges, you can still vote and influence the results.

I’ll be posting there 2x a week on Mondays and Thursdays so as long as I remain in the running my posting schedule will be Mondays and Thursday instead of Sunday/Wednesday.  I bet you didn’t even know I had a regular posting schedule did you?

  • Free Caricature

That’s right, it is back. You can win a digital caricature of you, a friend, your dog or your favorite celebrity.   This is an exclusive contest for those following Beartoons on Facebook.  Don’t worry for those of you who don’t have Facebook, I will be doing other contests soon.

    Here are the guidelines:

    • Go to the Beartoons Facebook Page and hit the Like Button
    • Add a comment there that you want to be included in the contest
    • Share the contest with your Facebook friends for an additional entry.  Let me know in the FB comments
    • Enter by Midnight Tuesday July 5.
    • Winner will get a free digital version of their caricature.  Use it as a gravatar, on facebook or however you would like.

Entrants must allow me to use one of their source pictures in a blog post to show the results and as always my disclaimer is there is no guarantees that you will think the finished product looks anything like you.  But that is a better guarantee (and price) than those crappy street caricature artists give.

    Good luck

  • Other Contests Around the Web

As well as my own Editorial Cartoon Caption Contest (still time to enter), there are several friends around the net that are also doing contests.

Jill at Elemental My Dear is holding a contest all month long encouraging readers to use to their own blog to “submit a post that reflects the saying “April Showers Bring May Flowers” in any format you may like such as…photography, poetry, short story, cartoon, etc.”  She will link to your posting and give away 3 5×7 photos.

Ken at Rick the Stick is encouraging readers to come up with creative ways to promote his webcomic.  I tried my hand at a theme song for Ken (we’ll have to wait and see if Ken ever lets it make the light of day as I need Britney Spears engineer to make me sound good).   Contest goes through the 25th of this month and the winner will be tooned as a guest star in the strip.

Samantha of Life’s a Witch is having a one week contest to win copies of her comic collections.  Every tweet or comment on her site will earn you easy entries.

Finally, not a contest but Nate is looking for guest cartoonists to take on his adorable characters from Knocking on Heavens Door as Fan Art.  I have to clean up my act before I can figure out what to submit.

  • Health Care Cartoon Caption Contest

    Healthcare Bill Caption Contest Cartoon

Ever since Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stated so eloquently about the Health care Bill, “…we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it…”, I have been questioning what exactly was in the bill.  Now that it is passed of course the add ons are coming out.   Included is a rider that now effectively eliminates the banks as a middle-man for student loans.  Instead the loans would be provided by the government.  Again this was in the Health Care Bill!

So what else do you think will come out that was hidden in the Health care Bill?  Are you funny?  We like funny?  Submit your thoughts in the comments section.  Next Monday I’ll post my favorites for all my readers to vote on.  The winner will get a signed copy of the final cartoon and have their banner ad posted to the right for at least 2 weeks.

If you don’t have a banner ad already on my links page, why not?  Send me a link or the banner (125×125).  Don’t worry if you have a blog/site but can’t make the banner.  If you are the winner, I’ll also make one for you.

Bonus points for people who promote this contest on your own blog, facebook or share via one of the social bookmarks below.  (just let me know in the comments).

Remember, your entry doesn’t have to be anything related to health care.  Also anyone know what is meant by a “Hidden Mickey” (the title of the toon)??

12 16 09 Bearman Cartoon Happy PC Holidays

Personally I dont know which group irritates me more during the holidays.  The first group are those that force their employees to say Happy Holidays instead of leaving it up to the individual to say Happy Holidays, Merry Chistmas, or even Good Solstice.  The second group are those who call for boycotting retailers who decide to use Happy Holidays in their advertising instead of Merry Christmas.

Surprisingly the PC police haven’t caught onto the fact that the word Holiday stems from Holy Day.   I had many different things running through my head as to what to put on the sign the guy on the right is holding.  Then I figured I have some talented readers so I thought I would do a…

    Rules:

  • Help make Marie Flanders the Newest Character on the Simpsons

So Fox Broadcasting and The Simpsons television show are having a contest for the next few weeks looking for submissions to create the newest character in Springfield. I entered some basic information for my character assuming that when I hit next, I would be able to flesh out the character. Much to my dismay, I was not and unfortunately you are only allowed to enter once.

So I need your help promoting Marie Flanders on Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon etc etc. so hopefully the powers that be at the Simpsons Production Office will take notice and make sure to give Marie a second look.

While not part of the submission I took the liberty of drawing Marie so you have a visual.

      Marie Flanders on The Simpsons

Here is the info requested by the Site:

    Name:  Marie Flanders
    Known Aliases:  Mary Jane
Age: 76 (now you may be wondering why the woman in the picture above doesn’t look 76.  Remember that Ned is actually 60 but looks 40 so it is perfectly OK for his 76 year old mother to look 50.)
Occupation, if Any:  Retired VW Car Dealer
Sex, if any:  Female (of course I resisted saying ‘Yes Please’ to respond to this.)
Hair Color:  Gray (or Grey for all my overseas friends)
Body Type:  Voluptuous (more like a Jayne Mansfield type rather than heavy)
Blood Type:  A-  (she used to be an A+ but has been slipping in her old age a bit)
Distinguishing Features:  Chest, Hips and Long Hair
Last Seen:  Boarding a bus to a monastery to have her child Ned
Last Heard:  Yelling “you’ll never see me again” to her parents
    Known Catchphrase:  Stuff It!, Peachy-Keen

Now after this they tell you to click next and I assume that I will be taken to a second page that allows me to input a more detailed description of who Marie Flanders is and why she would be a great addition.  However all it had was the typical name, email entry info.

    Background:

First a little background on who Ned Flanders believes are his parents.  According to Wikia (not wikipedia)

Mona Flanders is the mother of Ned Flanders and the wife of Nedward Flanders Sr. She is a beatnik. She is seen in the episodes “Lisa’s First Word” when Ned introduces “Grandma Flanders”, where she is visibly aged and senile. A much younger Mona Flanders is seen in “Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Badasssss Song” when Ned has a flashback about his parents and Hurricane Neddy when she and her husband bring Ned to Dr. Foster. She is also referred to in “Lisa’s Date With Density”. It is assumed that by the normal Simpsons timeline that Mona Flanders, along with her husband Ned Flanders Senior, is deceased, likely due to her extreme old age.

Now the real story is that Mona is Ned’s Maternal Grandmother.  Nedward and Mona brought up their daughter Marie in a strict household.  Marie was a rebel and fought back at her parents the only way she knew how – she got knocked up at 16.  Furious and to escape ridicule of the neighbors, her parents sent her to a monastery until Ned was born.  Marie swore that if her parents put her on the bus, her parents would never see her again and after Ned’s birth he was returned to Mona and Nedward sans Marie.

Upset with losing their daughter, Mona and Nedward swore off their strict ways and turned into the most liberal of parents of young Ned (thus leading to the description above).

Marie lived up to her oath that her parents would never see her again.  Only after their death does she turn up in Springfield to surprise Ned that his mother is indeed alive and she moves in with Ned and his family.

     More on Marie.

Marie is an agnostic libertarian.  She abhors any authority figure whether it be a boss, the government or the church.  A direct reflection of the rebelling that happened as a teenager.  However she is not against using her brains (and her body) to get what she needs.  Mr Burns, Moe, Grandpa Simpson, and Duff Man all become potential love interests but only as much as Marie needs them for something.  Even Bart falls for Marie seeing an older kindred spirit who would just assume tell authority figures to “Stuff It” rather than do what they want.

I see big things for Marie in Springfield for a long time.  So help me out.  Hit one of the buttons (or several below)  Twitter, Stumble Upon, Facebook and spread the word about Marie.   Maybe the executives at The Simpsons or Fox will be inclined to visit.
