I had a hard time with today’s editorial cartoon. I knew in my head what I wanted it to say and went through many different iterations using cartoon characters and not. You’ll have the be the judge whether my sentiment came through and let me know whether or not you agree. Love to hear all sides on this as always.

I’m jus surprised this riot has gone on as long as it has. I was telling my mother yesterday that this one’s lasted longer than the LA riots and I thought they took forever. I thought Londoners were way smarter and more protective over their stuff than gang members.
I am not limiting this to London. Well the Canadian one there was NO legitimate gripe.
I totally agree. I was so upset with the Vancouver riot… And I’m a Canadian hockey fan! The amount of time and effort and money that went into building Vancouver up as an Olympic City games was completely ruined. A few hundred people who don’t even follow hockey used the result of a hockey game as an excuse to destroy. I really believe these folks were gonna do it, win or lose. A frickin’ shame!
I thought you Canadians were more polite. I figured a riot up there would only occur if there were no donuts at Tim Hortons…haha j/k

Theres a difference between Canadian riots/U.S. riots and those in the UK. Why would anyone fear law and order if it comes with nerf wielding police?
I’m all for law and order and I’m all for police having the gear they need at their disposal to keep things in order. Does it need to be guns? No! They could have high powered water hoses aimed at the gangs in London, used tasers, rubber bullets, etc. Londons mistake is sending its law enforcement out into the streets against looters with the same or less in protective fighting gear than those they must subdue. Thats just stupid!
How are unarmed police supposed to get a riot under control exactly over there, witty bantor? Give me a break! “I do say old chap, your defouling the corner drug store with your shenanigans. I order you to stop”. Looter: “Those big words you are using officer, frighten me!, I shall go home and reflect and my poor behaviour – cheerio”. o.O #SarcasmIMPLIED

Often there isn’t a gripe at all, or a very small one. It’s a chance to get out and have some fun, and steal some stuff and just be a pain in the butt. The young don’t need much encouragement in that department. It’s a crying shame is what it is. I think you captured this very well.

I don’t know. I was young and didn’t find it necessary to break other’s property, steal their stuff, or beat the crap out of them. I must have led a sheltered youth.
You portrayed the subject well Bearman. That sort of mindless moron gang mentality behaviour really irits me. Being ex-military I tend to think the cops should just start shooting a few/lot (with rubber bullets of course) or send in the army. They’d back down pretty quick when the bullets start coming at them.
How about some basic tear gas? It is amazing that Egypt was able to protest and change an entire government without nearly as much property destruction and violence as what was happening in London.
Nah teargas is too soft on them. If they behave like that they waive their rights to be treated with respect. Bullets is the way to go!!! Or tanks, rocket launchers, flame throwers. Then the army gets some free training thrown in as well.
perhaps UK police should emulate their Uganda counterparts and use water cannon to douse rioters with pink dye ?

What a great idea, that I wish I had invented. Kind of like the dye packs in bank robberies. I can see some guy trying to say he way doused with Kool Aid packs.

I think it works fine. Not every political cartoon needs to look like Thomas Nast; sometimes just getting right to beef is all you need.
Believe me…NONE of my cartoons will ever look like Thomas Nast.

They don’t call England a “welfare state” for nothing. This has been on the cards for decades.
Unemployment + Boredom + huge separation of class = Riots.
Sadly, the problems will only get worse because of the “political correctness” in discussing the issues.

We are witnessing the decadence of western civilization. It is not new. It has been brewing for a long time. The elites have bought the governments and even though they remain “democracies” in name, the elected officials do not respomd to the voters, but to their corporate masters.
You will see more rage as the common man becomes less and less empowered.
And I’m not condoning the acts. I think it’s stupid that I should express my discontent with the government being “broken” by breaking stuff.
The problem is on both sides. Politicians who cowtow to corporate masters and politicians who cowtow to every “social” program proponent merely to get reelected. We can no longer afford to do both.
Is that beef pre-salted?

I am really surprised that things went down the way they did with the riots. The thing that really got to me is that they were looting their neighbors stuff which had no effect on the main cause. All it did was hurt the people around them not the government. And when thing like this happen it doesn’t send the intended signal, It just makes them look like a bunch a raving lunatics.
RT. So true. But they claim it offers them power when they feel powerless even if it is at the expense of their neighbor.
It’s stupidity I wonder if their parents are thinking they messed up, lol. Not a nice thought but funny to me.
If anyone has a beef with government (legitimate or not) there are appropriate means/channels for expressing concern. I fail to see how rioting is ever effective. I’m not a fan of the majority of what our government does, but the last thing I’d do is go out and destroy random property or attack some poor person who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems completely immoral to me.
I think really like how you’ve depicted this idea, Bearman… it seems very appropriate to me. 🙂

I think there are times when the government doesn’t listen and their needs to be coordinated efforts to gather and change. BUt when thing end up with violence for violence sake, you get no sympathy for your cause.
As someone who witnessed the Vancouver riot firsthand (since it was taking place right outside my apartment at the time), I think your cartoon says it all. It was so disheartening, and so opposite of the way Vancouver really is. It felt like we were back in the stone age.
How come you didn’t post the video on youtube or shoot them with dye colored water cannons?
I did not know you were talking about riots in general but knowing that makes the cartoon more effective. That is a tough thing to sum up in a single panel but needs to be said. I really like how you compared the giant boulders that spell out RIOT to the tiny ones that are legitimate. Well done.

I’d like to pick the ones I’m in.
note: I have nothing to riot about at present, but maybe hopefully someday I won’t have anything to riot about either.
double note: if riots happen in countries that I don’t care about … but my country thinks are legitimate, then they are probably good riots. hee hee!
triple note: I care about all countries, but I’m not so sure about those Care Bears.

well i could have predicted these riots.
gees, when i lived in london 5 yrs ago, every person i met was like FURIOUS with the government. they didn’t even care that they were having an election cus they said nothing would make a difference. They were more concerned about OUR election. They were so fed up. I mean, there are alot of issues over there….taxes are out of control. if you even want to DRIVE your car into the city of London they charge you like 30 lbs. It’s insane. So, i don’t know all the details of this particular riot, but i think it was a long time coming.
Socialism has its costs.
oh, but that being said, it’s NEVER okay to do what those idiots are doing. Not saying it’s right, just saying it was just a matter of time before people got desperate. But, don’t take it out on innocent people and businesses.. that’s just awful
But that is the issue. It is middle class white kids coming in and joining the fray.
