    Vote No on Issue 3

Vote No on Issue 3 Cartoon by bearman Cartoons

Ohio voters will go to the polls this week to vote on whether or not to allow the legal growing and distribution of marijuana in the state.  I am saying Vote No on Issue 3.

Not for any moral issues on my part.  However I truly believe that medical marijuana should be federally legal.  If there is a drug that could provide legitimate sufferers some relief from whatever medical condition they are suffering from I don’t think the government should mandate it’s legitimacy.  From a personal note, I have never smoked the stuff nor do I plan to but my fiscal side says we are spending millions incarcerating people for it and the market still exists without any tax money going to state/local governments.

So given the tide of states passing marijuana laws, I think it will be coming to Ohio.  But Issue 3 is not the answer.  The problem comes in the way the issue was placed on the ballot.  10 investment groups got together with their celebrity friends and each will be awarded one of the grow farms should the measure pass.  So my no vote is against a predetermined group of winners.  It was the same when the casinos were placed on the ballot.  I was for the casinos but against a predetermined group getting the keys to the state.

Rather I would prefer that if you are going to limit the number of pot farms in Ohio to 10, to have a silent bid system if the measure passed.  Sure the “fat cats” would still be the winners but it wouldn’t be predetermined ones and it would throw a huge investment into the state prior to the growth of the first bud.

  • Bernie Sanders Goes Back to the Future

Bernie Sanders Goes Back to the Future

Bernie Sanders goes Back to the Future

Today is October 21, 2015.  Any view of Social Media in the last week and you should know by now that today has been dubbed Back to the Future Day.  In the BTTF II, Marty travels to 2015 to save his kids.  This is the date he traveled to.

So of course I couldn’t resist a good mash up between Back to the Future and our current political campaigns.  Enter Bernie Sanders.  I always thought his hair resembled that of Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd in the movies.

The fun fact is courtesy of this post which states that in order to produce the same energy as the Flux Capacitor in the movies, you would need 1 1/2 Nuclear Reactors or 600 Wind Turbines.  That’s a lot of wind.

  • Trump and Clinton – The Connection

Trump and Clinton – The Connection

    9-22-15-Bearman-Cartoon-Clinton-Trump-Conspiracy-Why-Trump-is-in-the-Race

Donald Trump is an astute political investor having donated to candidates on both sides of the aisle.  However his history with donating and supporting Hillary Clinton has some conspiracy theorists wondering why threw his name in for the Republican Primary.   Could it be that this was just an elaborate ruse set up by the Clinton campaign to screw up the Republican Primary.  Imagine a plan to having the other candidates fall all over themselves trying to be just as obnoxious and unapologetic as Trump which could help a Hillary victory in the general election.

  • Trump Motivates the Troops

    Trump Motivates the Troops

    7-19-15-Donald-Trump-War-Hero-Bearman-Cartoons

Presidential Candidate Donald Trump must have felt empowered after announcing his Presidential Candidacy including this statement:

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Well what most might think there’s another egotistical celebrity/rich man using the Presidential campaign to draw attention to their outlandish notions, it seemed to have worked.  Trump has surged ahead of the rest of the Republicans.

But now some are claiming he bombastic remarks have gone to far, thus marking the point of his decline.  Senator and former POW John McCain has been going after Trump on his plans for Immigration Reform.  In discussing the Senator, Trump said

“He was a war hero because he was captured.  I like people who weren’t captured.”

Makes you wonder as this editorial cartoon ponders what else he might say to our current troops and veterans.

  • The Real Story Behind “The Interview”

The Real Story Behind “The Interview”

    12-29-14-Bearman-Cartoon-Kim-Jong-Un-and-Seth-Rogen

The real story behind “The Interview” will probably never be known.  But today’s cartoon tongue in cheek claims maybe it was a mutually beneficial relationship between Seth Rogen and Kim Jong Un all along.

There are so many conspiracy theories behind who really hacked Sony Pictures and what if any blame lays at the hands of North Korea.   Some reports say it was North Korea and others claim it wasn’t.  Even North Korea got into the conspiracy theory fray by claiming the United States government was actually behind the movie to undermine and embarrass the North Korean Government.  Now as history shows, especially during WWII, the US was heavily involved in film propaganda work as the majority of Americans went to the movies for entertainment.  But everyone knows our government isn’t funny, so to put this out is probably beyond them. SMIRK (As my friend Jynksie would say)

So with a limited run and “The Interview” being mostly streamed on the net, it make $18million in the first week and is the most talked about movie of the year.  Consequently, North Korea is also back in the news.

So conspiracy theory nerds, what say you?

  • A Different View of Net Neutrality

A Different View of Net Neutrality

    5-21-14-Bearman-Cartoon-Obama-Net-Neutrality

I have a different view of Net Neutrality than most based on what I have read.  That being said I am always open to additional info to sway me back to the masses belief that what the FCC has been proposing of late and the deal between Netflix and Comcast is completely bad for the internet as a whole.  But first of course I find that with all the discussion around the topic, the person you don’t hear from is President Obama who in 2008 stated:

“I will take a backseat to no one in my commitment to net neutrality.”

That prompted today’s editorial cartoon as it seems everyone is driving the conversation around Net Neutrality with the exception of the President.

I could write a huge diatribe about my feelings about the Netflix/Comcast deal but I found an article by Maggie Reardon of CNET that helped explain some things better for me so it may help others as well.  Check out her article here.  This portion was particularly helpful:

“The other thing to realize about the Internet is that the network itself is a shared medium. Information is chopped into packets that traverse the Internet separately and are reassembled at their destinations. Packets from your email or a video you selected from Netflix travel alongside packets for everyone else’s data. Just like a highway where all cars are subject to the same speed limit, but still travel at different speeds due to the congested road, some packets arrive at their destination sooner than others.

For some forms of communication it doesn’t matter much if the packets arrive in order or if some arrive a little later than others. This is true of most text-based communications, such as text-based websites or email. But for other forms of communication, such as audio or video, it’s crucial that all packets arrive in order and in close succession. If some packets are delayed or dropped, the experience of the video or audio once the packets are reassembled is not pleasant. There’s often buffering, pixelation, and/or jitter.”

    How I explain it:

Here is how I explained it to my wife and figure it worked for her that others might find it beneficial.  Think of the internet like Amazon.  You order from many manufacturers but the processing and delivery are all handled by an Amazon warehouse (let’s ignore the vendors that drop ship directly for this example).   Let’s say Amazon has 100 bays to process items into the warehouse and 100 more to process items out of it.  Everything flows well until too many manufacturers are trying to unload their items at the same time.  It causes slow downs much like on the net.

With a company like Google (YouTube) or Netflix they are sending an abundance of trucks to the warehouse at any given time.   This causes delays in them getting their items into the warehouse and therefore delays it getting out.  This is what causes dithering or delays in video at times.  So Amazon either has to build more bays or enlarge the ones they have to accommodate Netflix traffic.  The question becomes who should pay for that?  Should all Amazon customers pay for it or just the ones getting items from Netflix?  Well one way to do that is to have Netflix pay for the upgrades and then Netflix can choose to eat the cost or pass it on only to their own customers.

But if everyone pays for faster access, won’t it hurt those without means to pay?:

One of the arguments I consistently read about the issue are from those that take the information highway analogy and liken it to ISPs creating a toll road.   Right now they have the incentive to continue to expand and speed up all the roads.  But what happens if they create a toll road for companies to gain faster access.  Then ISP’s like Comcast will begin spending money only on infrastructure to make the toll roads faster and therefore leaving the “free roads” to maintain same speeds and service levels as today, never to increase again.

This is where I think the FCC and the President should be taking a stand.  I don’t think it should be an open access to allow payments for every large company to take advantage of to the detriment of smaller companies.  Rather I look at there being a download percentage limit.  Right now YouTube and Netflix each account for over 10% of the total internet traffic.  So let’s say the FCC rules state that any company with over 10% of the download traffic on the web can at their discretion enter into a mutually benefiting agreement with ISP’s to deliver the same uninterrupted service that others who don’t carry as large of data can enjoy.  Notice I didn’t say faster.

To me the biggest hassle in traveling is dealing with the WIDE LOAD trucks that slow traffic for miles and impede my own travel.  If the government created wide load lanes that the trucking companies had to pay to use but I didn’t get access to, I would be happy with the arrangement.  They get a special lane and I my speed is not degraded to get to my destination at all.

So what do you think?  Am I missing anything?

    Charity Challenge Update

Week 2 let me know if I missed anyone.

Including Bearman in a Cartoon ($10):

    Blogging about the Challenge ($5):

Adding me to Circles on Google Plus ($1):

    • 483 People added me in this week.

Dollar for Dollar Match for Contributions to Crayons 2 Computers:

For a week two total of $1033 and meaning I went over the $2000 goal.  HOWEVER:

I have made a decision that if we hit the limit of $1500 that I will still pay cartoonists for adding Bearman to their webcomic through the end of the month as well as match to the $500 limit.  So I am adding the three toons from this week and I am going to keep matching even though I hit the 500 limit.   So with the 1500 hit plus the $30 in webcomics from this week and the total of $620 in matching donations

I have committed to donating $2120 so far.

So no more payouts for blogging or adding me on G+ but if you are interested in getting involved with your webcomic or matching donation?  See this post.  And

Best way I can ask you to support those who support me is to visit their websites and check out the amazing work they are doing.

  • State of the Disillusioned Cartoon

    State of the Disillusioned Cartoon

1-29-Bearman-Cartoon-President-Obama-CEO-UnemploymentSo President Barack Obama had his State of the Union (or as I prefer State of the Disillusioned) address yesterday where he talks about his plans for the coming year.  Everything was a typical Presidential address and nothing I heard that was new.   However one comment he made did make me chuckle:

That’s why I’ve been asking CEOs to give more long-term unemployed workers a fair shot at new jobs, a new chance to support their families. And in fact, this week many will come to the White House to make that commitment real.

Sure CEO’s have the power to set direction but I found it funny as most CEO’s (especially in the larger sized companies that would garner a White House invite) are probably out of touch with hiring decisions anyway.   And do we really need to have them fly to the White House to get their buy-in?  More sad is that he has three years left in his term and already they are calling him a lame duck President.  Ouch.  Congress (both sides of the aisle) needs to quit waiting for the next best thing to get things done.

  • Texas Secedes from United States Cartoon

Editorial Cartoon Texas Secession and Illegal Immigration

Seems some conservatives are none too happy about President Obama being reelected.  Disappointment is one thing and I am sure you heard many threats from people saying they were leaving the country if Obama got reelected.  Well I guess they realized that most of the rest of the world is more socialist than the United States so instead, there are several states with petitions going to secede from the United States.   One of the most active is from a group in Texas, who has pulled in more than 80,000 signatures so far.

Where is this petition taking place you ask, well on the White House website of course.  Seems that any group that can get 25,000 signatures in 30 days would elicit a response from the President.  We’ll wait and see what he says.

Oh and some facts on illegal immigration were found here including the fact that Texas has about 16% of the illegal immigrants in the United States.

  • Retro Cartoon: Recycled Campaign Promises

    11 5 07 Recycled Political Candidates copy

OK this is a twice recycled cartoon post.  So I am lazy.   But it is still relevant.  I originally created this in 2007 before I had a blog.   Reposted it in 2009 and now reposting again since half of you are new here since then.  From my 2009 post:

I did this editorial cartoon about 2 years ago after an election. In the states, the landscape is cluttered with yard signs that promote candidates and issues in the month leading up to the election. While the volunteers are quick to put up the signs they are slow to remove them.

Locally we have laws that say you can’t put the signs on public property, yet no one pays any attention to that because there really isn’t a penalty for violating it.

So be a good citizen and clean up your campaign yard signs, recycle them and please STOP recycling your campaign promises.

    Funny how things never change.

  • Obama’s Secret Weapon

Bearman-Cartoon-Obama Wins Because of Hurricane Sandy

Wouldn’t I have had egg on my face today if I had drawn today’s editorial cartoon and my prediction that President Obama would win was wrong?   Well I was right.  If you asked me 10 days ago, I would have gone with Romney.   Interestingly none of the pundits are talking about how the poll numbers moved back into President Obama’s favor after his several visits to the East.   As I allude to in the cartoon, he finally showed the leadership that has been missing in the past several months.   HOWEVER, if the election were another two weeks away, it may have swung back to Romney with the issues surrounding recovery and returning to normalcy.

Hopefully the President and the Republican lead House will be able to reach across the aisle and actually start compromising on some issues and do the job we need them to do.  Four more years of posturing and sticking their heads in the sand isn’t going to do a damn thing for the country.

    UPDATE

Christina of Pop Smoothie sent me this picture of an Obama bobblehead doll she got at a Cincinnati Cyclones Hockey Game.  You can see Obama wearing the Cyclones jersey! Nice.
