  • Bearman Cartoon: Missionary Atheists

Our friend Jammer is a frequent contributor over at Prairie Populists and Progressives.   A recent post discussed a newer group of atheists who are are “insisting upon aggressively confronting religious ideas, whereas the older group favors working with believers.”  I would contend that this “newer” group is actually the older group offshoot of the teachings of Richard Dawkins (not to be confused with Richard Dawson) and the like who equate religion with a form of mental illness.

In fact a USA Today article says that many atheists no longer want to be associated with those beliefs and actually profess that religion and the religious have a place.

The old atheists said there was no God. The so-called “New Atheists” said there was no God, and they were vocally vicious about it. Now, the new “New Atheists” — call it Atheism 3.0 — say there’s still no God, but maybe religion isn’t all that bad.

Tanner Leah wrote one of his tongue-in-cheek posts about one group, The Coalition for Reason, trying to promote the fact that Atheists shouldn’t feel alone by placing ads all over the NY city Subway system.  I don’t think there is anything wrong with a group promoting the fact that people with like beliefs (or lack thereof) can come together.

However, you all know I hate bad statistics.  The ad says “A Million New Yorkers are Good Without God.  Are You?” In a NY Times article discussing the stunt, one of the promoters says they got to the “million” number by citing:

“the American Religious Identification Survey, released earlier this year, as evidence of a shift away from organized religion. Those checking “none” for religion rose from 8 percent of the population in 1990 to 15 percent in 2008, effectively making “no religion” the fastest growing religious identification in the United States.

De Dora said that the “million” New York nonbelievers mentioned in the advertisements is the result of an extrapolation based on the survey’s findings. With more than 8 million residents living in New York’s five boroughs, the organization projects more than a million potential atheist New Yorkers.”

Just because 15% of the population list themselves as having no religion, this DOES NOT equate to them being atheist or in fact not believing in some higher power.  In fact looking at the American Religious Identification Survey results, show of the people who wrote “none” as a religion, only 5% of them identified themselves as atheist.

8.3 million New Yorkers x 15% writing “none” x 5% of that group identifying as atheist = 62,250 Atheists in NY City.

In response to my comment on the Prairie Populists that lack of belief in supernatural is still essentially a religion, someone wrote ‘But most atheists aren’t going to bashing on your door on a Saturday morning.”  To which I responded, True and neither are most Christians. Personally I don’t mind either’s belief as long as they respect my own.”

But what if the next step in evolution of atheism is to actively recruit new “non-believers”?

  • Marge Simpson Playboy Centerfold Pictorial

I am sure I am not the first to think about this cartoon idea when I heard that Marge Simpson is going to be the centerfold on an upcoming issue of Playboy Magazine. I guess the phrase does the carpet match the curtains is true in her case.

I hear there is a huge following for cartoon porn. Personally I don’t get it. On the bright side I guess I’ll get a lot of traffic from pervs.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Bengals Beat Steelers

Sorry for my focus on American Football toons as of late but the Cincinnati Bengals have not beaten the Pittsburgh Steelers at home in eight years. Sunday they finally won and my friends in Pittsburgh deserve a little payback for all the years that they beat on us.

For the uninformed, the Bengal Tiger obviously represents the bengals.  Pittsburgh fans carry en masse a towel that is printed with the words “terrible towel” to games at home and away.   The towel is now synonymous with the Steelers.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Obama and Carter

I firmly believe that there are people who oppose President Obama and everything he stands for simply because of the color of his skin. As Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post does, I would tend to throw most of the “birthers” in that group (these are the people who say Obama shouldn’t be President because they think he wasn’t born in the United States).

But former President Jimmy Carter does nothing to further real work done in race relations or even bring to light real racist attitudes toward the current President, when he said, “I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man.” An “overwhelming portion”???

It is a huge disservice to the sitting President to make a comment like that.  So now instead of opposing plans and creating dialogue about it, Obama’s foes will simply oppose everything without dialogue for fear of being charged with racism.

On the other hand the Right doesn’t do a good job of protecting themselves against charges of racism. When 5% of a anti-Obama policy rally contains racist imagery or signage and there isn’t a strong stance within the group itself to weed those people out, it is no wonder that those are the people that end up on the news.

I like what Bill Clinton had to say in response and would be more in line with my thinking:  “I believe that while it is true that some of the most extreme opponents of President Obama may also still have racial prejudice, I believe that 100 percent of those who are opposing him now would be against him if he were a white Democrat.”

Much like Joe Wilson disrupted the President’s address, Carter is distrupting the President’s agenda. Jimmy does a great job of building houses.  He should stick with that.

  • Bearman Cartoon: ACORN BUSTed

So ACORN a United States group that the Republicans have been trying to go after for the last several years has pretty much screwed themselves over. It seems a man and a woman posing as a pimp and prostitute went into several ACORN offices trying to figure out how they could qualify for housing and other services ACORN helps with. The prostitution and the pimping didn’t seem to phase the workers and even worse niether did the fact that they talked about pimping out underage Salvadoran sex slaves.

Jon Stewart sums it up in his rant better than I can explain all the details.

So I give you the ACORN got BUSTed editorial cartoon.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Kanye West

So the blogosphere is abuzz today about Kanye West butting into the acceptance speech of Taylor Swift last night on the MTV Video Music Awards and dissing her saying that Beyonce should have won.  MTV, Huffington Post, TannerLeah, FrigginLoon and The Star Celeb are all saying their piece on it.

And then there is the reality brought to you by me:

  • Bearman Cartoon: Obama the Socialist

It doesn’t matter the President or the opposition, nothing seems to change. No matter how benign a comment or action by the U.S. President, the opposition has to turn it into a rallying cry. This week in the United States, President Barack Obama gave a speech on education aimed at students and taking personal responsibility for their education.

Some conservatives applauded the effort while others had a different attitude. “It is not the President’s job to lecture my kids on responsibility. It is MINE.” Funny these same people would probably wonder where the truant officer was when they see other peoples’ kids roaming the mall during school hours.

But liberals, please don’t take a high and mighty stand either.  This is the same thing you did to Bush, they did to Clinton, you did to Bush I, you did to Reagan…  My problem is that these spout offs become the boy who cried wolf.  You might have an important point on an important subject but by then I have stopped listening.

So I bring you today’s Editorial Cartoon.

  • The Frustrated Cartoonist – At 100

Our final selection is from Nate Fakes.  He draws, might draw, used to draw the Frustrated Cartoonist.  Hell, I don’t know.  You see Nate has hit the big time with Mad Magazine as well and will have a recurring strip going forward.  He swears that doesn’t mean the end of his Frustrated Cartoonist character Jim, but given how he drew him at 100, I think it might be a sign.

The Frustrated Cartoonist is Jim who longs to be like Nate and actually get paid to do his craft.  Yet like all of us frustrated cartoonists, he has to manage a day job to pay the bills.  That and his girlfriend and neighbors seem to cut into actual cartooning time.  Anyone who has ever had a hobby that they eventually wanted to become a career will relate.

So I give you the slow progression of age of Jim.

    Aging Jim

So thanks Nate and thanks to all the great cartoonists for helping me out.  I look forward to reading all the comments.

Follow Nate on Twitter so you can keep up with all he is doing.

And follow me on Twitter too.  I should finally be posting again sometime this week.

  • D. Long – At 100

Our final two guest cartoonists are actual published cartoonists in the ultimate of cartooniness – Mad Magazine.  First up is D. Long (you can see the image of the now released Mad that has his work on his blog).   You actually have to buy the magazine to see what he drew though.  Someone is yelling “damn the capitalists”

Now D is the mastermind behind Edmund Finney’s Quest to Find the Meaning of Life.  I am thinking his website address of eqcomics is short for Edmund’s Quest but it could be that he used to draw cartoons for home audio buffs and didn’t want to lose the URL.

Anyway, D takes Edmund on an ongoing quest that continually gets him in and out of trouble.  Just when you think he is safe…BAM, another tragedy befalls.   Mr Long is quite the character himself and decided to show us what he thinks he will look like at 100.

    100-year-old-me

I am thinking that his balloon fetish might have taken a turn for the worse.  Thanks D!!

  • Unbearable Bears – At 100

Anyone with “Bear” in their webcomic title has to be outstanding.  And David LaMason must be even better than that because he has “bear” appearing twice in the title.  And this has special meaning because I am the recipient of David’s first Guest Cartoon.

Unbearable Bears is the story of Oskar, a dimwitted but loveable bear, and Bainbride, a headstrong birdbrain (literally he is a bird).  Frequently David himself has been making an appearance so he counts as a character too.  Thus I give you David LaMason at 100.

    Dave Lemason

I know this comment will come out of one of you.  NO, David was never “touched” by Michaels Magic Glove.

Come back in 2 days for another new guest cartoon from EQ Comics!!   You can also keep up with me via Twitter. (just not now, I am busy I told you)
