    RIP Bo Lumpkin

11-26-13-Bearman-Cartoon-RIP-Bo-LumpkinThere are some people you meet in life that will have little impact on you.  And then there are those who you never meet face to face that have a great impact.  Bo Lumpkin was one of the latter.  Bo was the purveyor of Gatorhead and I’ve Been Thinking, where he most recently began posting his jewelry that he sold locally.

Bo’s encouragement and consistent commenting not only on my site but all over the webcomic sphere was very much appreciated and his nuggets of wisdom will be missed.  Here is one of my favorites.

Bo Lumpkin fertile-mindsI recall an email conversation where he lamented about the lack of visitors he received to his sites.  To which I had to explain to him that for all it seems, my numbers weren’t much better haha.  But somehow that didn’t stop him from consistently visiting others site to drop a bit of Bo Wisdom.   And then something amazing happened.   Bo Lumpkin grew into his own character that others wanted in their webcomics.

Barry B made a YouTube animation using Bo as the main character.  Michael Pohrer did his own version of Bo’s Creatures of Habit feature.  George Ford had Bo make an appearance or two at Addanac City.  And then you have JP Keslensky of Bug Pudding who named his recurring character of an alligator, Bo Gator.  Michael Phelps of Life on 66 also named a character after Bo and even modeled the look on the real guy.   I am sure I am missing others but you get the idea.

I know if there is something after this world that Bo is jabbing away at anyone that will listen bragging on his family and dropping some wisdom.   If so, Bo put in a good word for those of us who can never live up to the example you set here in this world.

  • Hyenas LOL each Other

    Hyenas LOL each Other

    11-14-13-Bearman-Cartoon-Animal-Text-Message

This tidbit of information came from my Google Plus friend Mary Zeman.  She sent me this article that explains how bacteria left behind by one hyena can be picked up by other hyenas.   And from this article:  “Other hyenas that sample these leavings can sniff a wealth of information, including the animal’s sex, social status, willingness to mate and more. ”

The question is does this form of primitive (or advanced) social media among hyenas also carry over into other animal species (including Basset Hounds like Mary owns).  And you thought your dog just liked to smell other dogs butts.

Bearman Cartoons Cow's Milk Production and Music

Here is something you probably didn’t know.  Researchers have concluded and farmers have known for years that playing music to cows can increase milk production around 5%.  Now some cows prefer hard rock and some prefer classical, but all cows agree that they won’t produce if Justin Bieber’s music is played.  Ok I made that last part up.

  • Party Pooper

    Party Pooper

10 28 13 Bearman Cartoons Party PooperSo what age is it that you can’t wait to leave your own party because you are tired.  We hosted a party this weekend.  I can remember in my 20’s when we didn’t even go out to the bars until 10PM.  Now 10PM is the time we are coming home.   I don’t know how many more years I have before I dye my hair blue and am eating dinner at 5PM (with a coupon).

In my 20’s I could go to bed with a dirty place after a party and deal with it in the morning.  Now in your 30’s/40’s, somehow you get all responsible and feel the need to spend an hour cleaning up before you go to bed so you don’t have to deal with it in the morning.

10 17 13 Bearman Cartoons Castration is the Cure for BaldnessWhile reading a recent issue of Mental Floss Magazine, I came across a way to prevent men from losing their hair that has supposedly been known to work since the time of Aristotle.   CASTRATION.   So for those men who say they will do anything to keep their hair, how far will you really go?

And for those already bald, sorry it is too late for this method to work.

  • How Dexter Ended

    How Dexter Ended

9 24 13 Bearman Cartoons How Dexter Ended Cartoon*** SPOILER ALERT – DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU PLAN ON WATCHING THE FINALE OF DEXTER ON SHOWTIME – SPOILER ALERT ***

So today’s cartoon is in honor of the series finale of one of my favorite shows – Dexter.  For eight seasons on Showtime audiences have grown to love a serial killer with a code of ethics.  As horrible as he may have been, the writers continuously pit Dexter against even worse baddies forcing you to root for Dexter each season.   Of course nothing could ever top the fourth season and its finale starring John Lithgow as the Trinity Killer.    If all you know of Lithgow is his work in Third Rock from the Sun, then you will be even more creeped out about his run as a malicious serial killer and father.   So of course many fan sites are saying this was a weak season and quite a few are disappointed with the ending.

SERIOUSLY…THIS IS WHERE THE SPOILING BEGINS:

Some thought he should finally get the happiness he craved with Hannah, the first person to finally put something in Dexter’s heart beside his Dark Passenger.   Others thought he should have killed himself as he boats off into the eye of the Hurricane.   Many claim this was the weakest of all the seasons (I disagree as I think it was Season 6 with the exception of the last three episodes).   This was no Trinity Killer with my heart racing through half the episodes but it had some definite strengths and a couple weaknesses but those were limited to two plot points.

First, Hannah is a wanted fugitive and knows that there are people actively looking for her.  No hat, no haircut, no dye job?   Dexter producers, Scott Buck and Sara Colleton have an explanation here in this Entertainment Weekly article but it still didn’t make sense for Dexter not to at least buy her a wig.

Second, if nothing else Dexter learned in the fourth season that his inaction has just as many consequences as his actions.  Because he chose not to kill the Trinity Killer when he had the chance, it ultimately ended up in Rita being murdered.   Fast forward to this season and the same situation was put in front of Dexter with the Brain Surgeon.  Dexter’s inaction led to the Brain Surgeon ultimately being responsible for Deb’s death.

Outside of these points, the season did a good job of creating a sense of moving onward for many of the rest of the cast including Hannah finding out about Dexter’s “death” online while in Argentina.  Though I have to admit I was waiting for Masuka’s daughter to do something really crazy.

In the end, Dexter realizes that the only way to keep from hurting the ones he loves is to avoid human contact and move to where his interaction with others is limited.   So we see him in the final scene as a loner bearded lumberjack.   My wish is that if they ever make the series into a musical, my cartoon will be an inspiration and it ends with Dexter singing the famous “I’m a Lumberjack” song by Monty Python.

  • Wombie Wookiee

    Wombie Wookiee

Wombie Wookiee by Bearman CartoonsThe Wombie Wookiee is a mash up of Peter Marinacci’s Wombania comic characters and a Star Wars Wookiee (Chewbacca).  It started when Peter sent me this background image of Canada.  Don’t ask me what it is but I said one day I would do something with it.  Then a week or so ago somewhere in the blogosphere, he and I were joking and he mentioned a Wombie Wookie.   So of course I planned on doing it but before I could the illustrious Cha beat me to it.

Anyway here is my version.  If you can’t read the Chocolate Bar he is holding it Says “Wookiee Wombie Bar – May the Chocolate Be With You.

And honestly I didn’t know you spelled “Wookiee” that way until I spell checked myself cuz I know all of you would be all over me.

  • Imitation Crab

    Imitation Crab

9 16 13 Bearman Cartoons Imitation CrabSo today’s cartoon was inspired by eating some imitation crab over the weekend, which of course made me wonder what fish tastes like crab.  Well actually none.   The primary ingredient is Alaska Pollock (which is also the primary type of fish used in many fast food restaurants “fish” entrees).   Then it gets processed to hell with flavorings, colorings and other things I can’t explain.   But in the end, it is tasty!!

Any crab (imitation or otherwise) lovers out there?

  • I Was For the War

    I Was For the War

9-10-13 Bearman Cartoons John Kerry I was for the warSeems Secretary of State John Kerry flubs on the mic almost as much as Vice President Joe Biden.  But the difference is, Kerry might have stumbled into a way that forces the hand of the Obama administration thus preventing the U.S. involvement in Syria.   More details at the NY Times article.

Many may remember the line used and abused by the right when Kerry said “I was for the war before I was against it” referring to Iraq.   Now it looks like he may have to change his mind again as Russia tries to call his bluff.

Is there a Social Media Posting Frequency Sweet Spot?

What is the Social Media Sweet Spot for Post Frequency by Bearman CartoonsFor those of you who use Social Media (be it Google Plus, Twitter, Facebook) is there a sweet spot for the number of posts a person should make in a day/week?   How much is so little you think they abandoned or at least aren’t interested?  How much is too much that you tend to ignore their posts and probably miss good things from them but can’t weed through all the noise?  How does resharing/retweeting posts factor?

I have my own thoughts but want to hear from you.
