  • Just One Bad Century Tshirt

    Just One Bad Century Tshirt

Chicago cubs building character since 1909 tshirt

Have you ever had a bad day? What about a bad century? If you are a Chicago Cubs fan you probably have had both. Something about a goat and a curse and the once perennial winners can’t buy a baseball championship. So some “fans” got together to poke fun at their team. Because sometimes crying just waters down your beer. Thus became the site Just One Bad Century

So in honor of 2014 the guys over there asked me to use their previous tshirt look but update it with a new slogan and image. This is it. So if you are interested head over to their site and buy it.

  • Every Damned Time Reddit (another viewpoint)

Bearman-Cartoons-Every Damned Time Reddit (an alternative view)This is a response cartoon of sorts.  The other day I was trolling through Reddit.  For the uninformed, Reddit is a social news site, where people can upload pics, news, cartoons etc.  Reddit users can upvote or downvote any entry.    The little white guy with the orange eyes is the reddit mascot.

When I remember, if something strikes me while I am surfing the web, I will post it to Reddit  and admitedly (while not everything) I will post some of my own stuff (probably because I live with a bunch of lazy readers who never noticed the damn share this buttons at the bottom of every post..haha you know I love you).   I am always amazed at the things that get upvoted and the things that get downvoted both of what I post and what others do.  Sometimes, I am “this is so f-ing stupid.  Why is it getting so many upvotes?”  And other times “This is amazing.  Who are these dumbasses downvoting it?”  So I can never figure out fully what people would be interested in.

So the other day I was going through Reddit and found a post titled “Every Damned Time, Reddit”  by a deviantart illustrator that goes by FindChaos.  (Click on his link to find a full size version of the cartoon)

So as you can see FindChaos finds Reddit so fun to play with forcing him to keep coming back again and again, while I tend to get beat to shit every time and still find my way back there.  Is there a battered redditors support group??

  • Editorial Cartoon: Tracy Jones and Scott Sloan

Editorial Cartoon: Tracey Jones and Scott Sloan

It’s been a while since I have done an editorial cartoon with a local flair.  Tracy Jones  and Scott Sloan do an afternoon talk show on 700WLW in Cincinnati.  Tracy played professional baseball for 5 years (on five different teams).  Taking nothing away from that accomplishment, Tracy (tongue in cheek) is always telling Sloan that he doesn’t understand:

    • Professional Baseball Players
    • Any professional or college athlete
    • Celebrities
    • Pretty much anything else

…because Scott “Never played the Game”

Recently they have been discussing how Cincinnati Red’s pitcher Mike Leake was arrested for shoplifting.  Leake’s actually bought some shirts and went to exchange them.  Rather than asking for a salesperson’s help, he decided he didn’t have time as he was late getting to the ballpark.  So he exchanged his shirts by putting back his previously purchased ones and tore tags off the ones he wanted, put them back in his bag and walked out the door.

Tracy of course said the rest of us wouldn’t understand how a professional ballplayer doesn’t have the time to wait around for sales clerks to wait on them.  Scott responded that the rest of us know better than to think we are entitled to make up our own rules.

Anyone ever come across someone who was “entitled” to not follow the rules because of their position or celebrity?  Or, know of someone who was a “expert” in one field that thinks they know everything about every other field?

    *** UPDATE ****
Scott emailed me to say that he loved the cartoon and has posted it on his blog.

  • Bearman Editorial Cartoon: Manny Ramirez

It seems like Wrestling and Baseball have the biggest issues with performance enhancing drugs. Does it go on as much in other sports and if so, why is it downplayed in the press?

  • Jerry Dowling Published Book on Pete Rose

When you think about Cincinnati cartoonists, most people think of recently retired Jim Borgman.  But for those of us who have a Jerry Dowling  original hanging in our house or eat at Arthurs on occassion, Jerry also is a Cincinnati cartooning icon.

For years he worked at the Cincinnati Enquirer and has focused mainly on single panel sports cartoons.  In the past several years, his work can still be seen weekly in the local indie paper City Beat.  He has pulled together his years of doing Pete Rose cartoons – from the Big Red Machine to the Big Ugly Banishment – and put them in a book with baseball writer Hal McCoy called Drawing Pete.   You can read an article about it from co-author Hal McCoy by following this link.

I know you can get it at Amazon (click picture) or at local Cincinnati book retailers.
