I love Kangaroo

Bearman Cartoon I love KangaroosSo once again today’s cartoon was based in some semblance of truth.  One of my top 3 things we did was visit the Australian Zoo (aka the Steve Irwin Zoo).  Because of liability and stupid people, you don’t have the same level of interaction with animals in the U.S. as you can in Australia.  We literally could enter the pen with the Kangaroos, Wallabies and Koalas.

BUT……………..as cute as they were and typically not being an adventurous eater,  I only hesitated for a moment when I saw Kangaroo on the menu.    Much like Ostrich or Buffalo is in the states, Kangaroo is a very lean meat.  Unlike the other two it didn’t seem as gamey and was quite enjoyable.

One of the guides said we could minimize green house gases caused by cows by instead moving to a kangaroo diet for our meat.  However, the guide wasn’t entirely correct.  While the majority of methane that cows produce come from their burbs (an affliction that seemingly kangaroos are immune), the roos do fart.   Yet the amount of methane produced by kangaroos is about 1/3 of that produced by cows.   So why aren’t there kangaroo farms cropping up all over the states.  Climate.  According to this article “The meatier breeds do not thrive outside of the Australian climate. They are sensitive to humidity, which means that it’s very difficult to breed them outside of Australia.”

This is why I don’t eat rabbit.

  2. jynksie says:

I’ve had kangaroo… the aftertaste stayed with me for 50 miles! [dont ask]

  3. lisleman says:

I would love to try it especially in its native land. I like Buffalo. We have a nearby restaurant that serves great Buffalo burgers. I suspect Buffalo might have the same problem as the cows.

    • Bearman says:

Funny as healthy compared to cow as it is, I don’t see many buffalo farms popping up.

      • Nef says:

I can guess a few reasons for that:

        1) Larger initial investment. Getting stock should be harder and more expensive than for cattle.
        2) Lower feed/meat ratio than for cattle, meaning that your buffalo eats more pound per pound.
        3) Larger space and infrastructure requirements. Buffalo need more space than cattle.
        4) Harder to market. Distribution channelss for cattle are well established.

Also, there is a market segment for lower quality beef that is served by old dairy cows, and we don;t sell buffalo milk, that I’m aware of.

  4. Comedy Plus says:

I’d rather have a nice piece of beef. I’m just saying. Bwahahahahahaha.

Someday hubby and I will visit Australia. It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit.

    Have a terrific day. 🙂

  5. Colleen says:

Just don’t eat the wallabies. The kangaroos are OK to eat. As are the emus.

  6. Mark Stokes says:

I’m sure Americans would hop at the chance to eat a Roo burger.

  7. David Hurley says:

Haha, this makes me want to be a vegeterian (too cute to eat). 😉

  8. Gruhn says:

Now if they served Koala people would get angry. Really too cute to eat!

  9. G.B. Miller says:

Somehow, the song “Fish Heads” is rumbling through my head.

Perhaps a kangaroo and vegemite sandwich is in order?

  10. Bo Lumpkim says:

Are the Zoos kinda like those fancy restuarants where you pick out your own lobster and they cook it. Do you go out and find the Kangaroo you want to eat and then they serve it to you?

  11. frigginloon says:

Last time I was in the States I went to Ted’s Buffalo Grill everyday. Even got to sit down with Ted Turner in Atlanta for a chinwag.

As for Kangaroo meat, I have a hard time eating our national emblem.

  12. Binky says:

    Shocked, I am SHOCKED!!

  13. susi spice says:

    umm is this correct?

  14. Tony McGurk says:

I like roo meat but is still isn’t that overly available like cow or sheep or chicken or pig or horse.

  15. Pretty cute! And kind of reminds me of this Denis Leary bit. (Oh and, you know… it’s Denis Leary… so… probably NSFW…)

  16. Wow I didn’t realize that. I will add that the ever extending vault of slightly useless knowledge.

  17. Tony McGurk says:

Ha! I just had a thought, in the photo the roo is thinking “Feed Me, Feed Me” & I bet you’re thinking the same

  18. Bo Lumpkim says:

You would think they would serve that at the Outback Steak House if they really want to seem authentic.

  19. Miss R says:

    LOVED this one Bearman.
Here’s a reason why: grew up in Los Angeles; within 20 minutes of Marine Land (torn down in my teens) where you could pet the dolphins and sea lions (even be chosen to pet the killer whales heh), feed them sardines too.
By the time I was 11 years old it occurred to me that there was something twisted about offering Mahi Mahi on their menus.
Not to mention the Douglas Addams Hitchhiker’s cow asking to be eaten…
    Australia! America’s Last Frontier
Great on several levels my friend!

    • Bearman says:

I liked the bit RJ listed above about Tuna Fish and people worrying about Dolphins getting caught in the net but no one worries about the tuna because they aren’t cute.

      • Miss R says:

So true. At least they’re available in cute cans.
Being a species snob (-insert rhetorical/internal wtf?-) dolphins are far more intelligent than any type of tuna. Agree with RJ’s point on that!

  20. The leg haunch is the best part, puts a spring in your step!

  21. DadaHyena says:

There was a gigantic species of prehistoric kangaroo that was apparently so stupid that it was quickly wiped out by early humans when they first crossed paths.

And now, Bearman has his eyes set on a nice kangaroo BLT…

  22. Miss R says:

Bearman: You know the song ‘Tie Me Kangaroo Down Mate!’ Well there must be a reason, and that reason is -easier to get on the barbie.

  23. You couldn’t pay me to get into a pen with a kangaroo. Those hind feet can disembowel you with one kick!

  24. Androgoth says:

Steve Irwin was indeed a brilliant guy
and a real shame that he passed so soon,
    well before his time Bearman…

I really like your cartoons Bearman, and
they always offer giggles aplenty, Kanaroo
Special 🙂 lol Now that is definitle wicked
for sure 🙂 Great work Bearman 🙂
