Editorial Cartoon: Bieber Fever

Editorial Cartoon - Justin Bieber Fan

So it seems a few Belieber’s (Justin Bieber fans) are running amok because their demigod did not win the Best New Artist award at the Grammys (see here for the story and here for 10 of the vilest tweets against Esperanza I could ever read).

Now maybe there is a legitimate gripe that she shouldn’t have even been considered in the category.  However, how long and at what level does an artist have to be on the scene to no longer be considered new.  If new to the previous year, then Justin himself wouldn’t have been eligible since his first album hit in 2009.  And there has been a precedent set anyway.  Back in 1999, Lauryn Hill won after going solo but was already established as part of the Fugees (and Sister Act II).

This isn’t American Idol.  It is not a popularity contest.

You aren’t in seeking reform in the Middle East.  This decision doesn’t truly affect your life in any meaningful way.

Justin isn’t going to marry you.  So please have some decorum.

And while you are disappointed with his loss as a fan, do you really need to threaten someone who had nothing to do with any of the decisions in the first place?  Why don’t you take a lesson from your idol and be gracious in your loss?

  1. Bo Lumpkin says:

Even at my age as often as I have seen it I am amazed at all this celebrity idle worship.

  2. Brad says:

Guys, as the spokes person for Canada, I apologize for unleashing this terror upon you.

  3. jynksie says:

Ahhh, to be young again and oh-so-very-stupid! o.O …those -were- the days when we could blame youth, ignorance and an unbalanced perspective of whats important in the world on our actions.

Forget the hungry, the poor, the meek and tortured, we -have- to focus on getting Bieber his award back! o.O …dear god in heaven, who gives a flying f*ck?!?

  4. That’s the sort of thing that makes me want to beat my head into a wall until I’m comatose. Of course the hospital I wound up in would probably be next to the home of young girls blaring Justin Bieber ‘music’ 24/7… 🙂

  5. Leila says:

I really feel sorry for anyone who maniacally worships celebrities, or any persons who are in no way a salutary, substantial influence to their lives. They’re so obsessed with what they think is an effigy of perfection, that they can’t get enough of it. They fail to realize the latent potential within themselves… I see this post more of an obituary than anything. How many people lose themselves in this megalomaniac-addiction? So blind and miserable in their lilliputian bubble… I feel so sorry.

  6. Mel says:

I didn’t hear about this. Only heard that Justin got a new haircut.

  7. DadaHyena says:

Yeah, and these are the same “Village of the Damned” kids who are losing their minds over MAD magazine’s lampoon of Beiber’s book. They’ve been going around burning all the copies in a bonfire and attacking the writers and artists.

Say…didn’t Dan Long have a comic in that issue? Egad! RUN, DAN!

    • Bearman says:

Poor Dan. Works hard to get his stuff in MAD only to have it burned in bonfires.

On the bright side, individual sales of MAD are probably up. Oh the power of the Bieber either for good or bad.

  8. George says:

I’ve heard so many complaints against the winners of this year’s Grammy Awards. I’ve always known that it doesn’t matter who WE think should win, there’s always someone else (usually in more power), who dictates who the victors will be. What we really need is another Kanye-moment of busting up on stage and settin’ thangs straight! 🙂

  9. bearman. i’ll forgive you for these harsh criticisms.

but only if you go to the matinee of Never Say Never wit me?

  10. Friggin Loon says:

I’m surprised Hannity hasn’t called it an Obama conspiracy as it’s obviously a race based decision. Hello, she was the first ever JAZZ artist to win the award, plus no one had ever heard of her (well, in Bieber World anways). Gosh, doesn’t anyone else see it, she’s the Obama of music!

Blahahahaaha it’s about time the Grammy’s showed some class and taste. The awards are about MUSIC not popularity (and haircuts).

Is it me or can’t Bieber fans spell?

  11. Gavin says:

Beiber brings out the worst in me too – although it’s because of his bad hair and music.

  12. Jillsy Girl says:

I didn’t watch the awards, but I looked up Esperanza and her music is much more sophisticated than Bierberhead’s!

    • Bearman says:

I don’t necessarily think that should be the determining factor. I know I hate when all the best picture nominees are things I wouldn’t want to see. But the reaction as if the world needs correcting is crazy.

  13. Binky says:

“Justin isn’t going to marry you.”
You have single-handedly destroyed the dreams of millions of tweens!

  14. lisleman says:

Unfortunately manners, logic, politeness does NOT come with anyone’s twitter account. Maybe if I and my peers could have tweeted back when we were teens it might have gotten nasty. I did listen to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention after all.

  15. Tony McGurk says:

I absolutely loath the whole Celebrity hype thing. I prefer the music of the lesser known “Justin Beaver”

  16. Well said.
Besides this esperanza spalding who i am currently listening to on youtube actually has genuine talent and more importantly isn’t a cheap packaged product.
No wonder the dumb bieber lovers hate her.
    She represents progress.
Gosh. glad that’s out of the way. lol

    • Bearman says:

I don’t take anything away from Justin and his talent. He does write many of his songs unlike some packaged boy band type stuff.

      • He’s young, still plenty of scope and time to mess up his life. lol
I know he can sing but this spalding girl has something very cool and charismatic about her performance. and deserves to win.
I guess you agree to a certain extent, the hate mail is wrong and vile.
Even the hate mail Metal heads like to throw at beiber

  17. Nate Fakes says:

Bieber. just the name makes me vomit. Now, if he was Justin Beaver or Cleaver, I’m sure he would have won.

  18. Jande says:

Well I’ve heard of this Bieber guy (what kind of name for a *star* is that?) but I’ve never hear any of his songs. And frankly I don;t care much and I’m too busy anyway.

I just think this kind of obsessive behavior (after all, “fan” is short for “fanatic”) just shows how dispossessed kids are today. They are powerful, but aren’t socially empowered. They are clever but rarely allowed to do anything worth while. All their time is taken up with being legally forced to follow the dictates of others, so why not pick an area of rebellion that pushes back against the cotton-wool coddling of an uncaring society and obsess about some “star” or another.

What can they believe in? A mythical(to them) God for whom everyone starts wars maybe? Who will show them the way to decency before the “mob rule” takes over?

Gah! I’m blathering, but I hope you get my point.

  19. Jason says:

You’re right about MAD hitting a nerve. Check out the google image search for “mad magazine justin beiber” to see it blowing up on blogs.

  20. Bo Lumpkin says:

By the way who is Justin Beiber anyway?

  21. Gruff Guano says:

Ah… infatuated teenage fans. We should consider keeping them in hibernation until their brains have matured enough to be susceptible to nuances of quality and aesthetics. It’s only logical.

  22. Dan says:

This is why I only listen to oldies. That and new things scare me.

  23. It is too funny how wrapped up in this kind of stuff people get
