Editorial Cartoon: Chili and Schmidt

Bearman Cartoons - Surya Yalamanchili

So right here in Southern Ohio, there is a former contestant on the Apprentice and former Brand Manager of Procter and Gamble, Surya Yalamanchili running for Congress against the incumbent Jean Schmidt.  Now I don’t have anything really against Schmidt but in her time in office, I can’t think of one thing she has done except lecture six year olds on abortion.

Yalamanchili knows people might have trouble pronouncing his name so instead he goes by “Chili” and his website is VoteChili.com.  Now of course, I don’t agree with every stance on the issues  Surya makes but here is one thing that impresses me.  He has refused to accept any money from corporations or PACs (political action committees) in his bid for Congress.  So many politicians talk about “corruption” caused by corporate donations yet not one does anything about it…until now.

I also like the fact that just because he is a Democrat, he doesn’t seem to be the type to toe the party line.  In fact, in his debate with Schmidt he said “I’m on the side of the voters of the 2nd District…Both parties have failed America…It’s a system that’s corrupt.”

Too much of the impasse in Washington is due to line drawing.  Wish you luck Chili (you’ll need it facing an opponent with 5x as much money and who is the incumbent)

  1. Miracles have been known to happen

  2. George says:

He sounds like a more decent candidate. Let’s hope he survives before the Schmidt hits the man.

  3. timm says:

Being in California and you know how screwed up we are, I don’t know anything about your candidates but this cartoon is AWESOME! Pure Bearman! One of our candidates here is “Brown” as well.

  4. Bo Lumpkin says:

I am for term limits and campaign spending limits. I am tired of our government being for sale to the highest bidder.

    • Bearman says:

Agree…If I ran for office I would only stay for one term (then I would get a fat paycheck from a lobbying group the rest of my life..haha)

    • Rick says:

      We already have term limits.

      They’re called “elections.”

    • Bill Thacker says:

Would you support public ally funded elections?

      • Bearman says:

Don’t think they work. So someone gets public funds and his/her opponent still secures private funding. Someone will always have more money to spend.

And let’s say both candidates agree to having the same amount of public funding. They’ll just privately have their supporters form PACs and run those awful commercials blasting the other guy.

  5. MJ says:

    Ha,ha,ha comic gold!

  6. the reps will pick up some seats

  7. Wait. Someone lectured to 6-year-olds about abortion?? There must have been a lot of strange parent-child conversations during the car ride home from school that day.

    • Bearman says:

According to the letter the school sent home to the parents “She defined abortion as the taking of a child’s life in the mother’s womb,” the apology letter said. “She indicated that abortion involves the killing of a child before it is born. She was not graphic or any more detailed in this regard.”

  8. I think I remember him from The Apprentice. I like that show a lot more when they have normal people on instead of the celebrities. Celebrity Apprentice is the biggest waste of time ever.

I’d vote for him just because I’m craving some chilli.

  9. Here in Britain our coalition government seems to be making things happen despite the pain created… power to reality!

    • Bearman says:

Problem is here you have primaries where the Dems and Reps duke it out amongst themselves to determine a winner and then they face the other party in the next election. In the primaries, those on the far left or right tend to win the nomination while in the general election, those closest to the middle win.

  10. bschooled says:

Haha! Oh, Bearman, you are so punny.

I would vote for him just based on his name…(then again, I’m ignorant.)

  11. Tony says:

Not being an American I didn’t really get it till I read the explanation. That bowl of chilli sure looks good. Haven’t had some chilli in a long time.

  12. nursemyra says:

    Yalamanchili is a GREAT name

  13. Surya "chili" says:

This made my day! Thanks! Surya “chili”

  14. WriterDood says:

Yes I Know Captain Stern and Never did there live a kinder more generous man.
    He’s never Done anything Immoral…
UNLESS you count the Preschooler’s Prostitute Ring!
And he’s never done anything illegal
UNLESS you count all the times he sold DOPE disguised as a Nun!

  15. Jillsy says:

I wish money didn’t have such a loud mouth.

  16. DadaHyena says:

Sounds too good to be true. Don’t be surprised if there’s a few surprise peppers in that Chili.

  17. lisleman says:

As you read in my post I don’t care for political ads but I do enjoy political cartoons. Maybe every candidate should be required to show a cartoon about their campaign.

  18. Friggin Loon says:

    Chili Con Carnage

  19. Nate Fakes says:

Sounds like a winner. Unfortunately, here in Florida, my choices are all pretty bad. But then again, when aren’t they?

  20. I am glad Chili has decided not to take PAC money. I have taken a similar stance, only I am not taking money from anybody nor am I spending money.

  21. Roland says:

You have to love when situations write themselves. Nice play on names. P.S. sorry for my absense from around these parts, it will not become a habit

  22. I like this guy as well. If only more people would step up and follow suit!

  23. jynksie says:

Name a politician who Isn’t full of Schmidt?!? o.O

  24. Dr. Cynicism says:

Bearman, I say you run as Mac & Cheese. Then you two can have a comfort food showdown!

  25. SpilledInkGuy says:

Ha! Well I do accept money from corporations and PAC’s. Just throwing that out there. I’ll be happy to send a remittance envelope if anyone’s interested. 🙂

  26. starlaschat says:

Great cartoon. That’s what we need is for good people to run and not just the greedy corrupt types that seem to be usually attracted to the job.

    • Bearman says:

Unless I disagree with their platform…and then I don’t want them to run at all..haha

      • starlaschat says:

By the way I went to the website Votechili.com and watched a couple of his videos and read some on his website refreshing and heartening.

  27. lisleman says:

I was just watching some talking heads talking about campaign spending and I got and idea for a cartoon. Of course, I don’t draw cartoons but you do so I am passing this idea along to see if it sticks.
Show a candidate begging with a sign saying “spent $1.2 million and still lost. Unused buttons 50 cents.”

  28. I’m voting for T-Boz.
