Bearman Cartoons: John Hughes Tribute

Writer/Director John Hughes past away this week.  Many know that he had a hand in Pretty in Pink, the Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles (which I really wasn’t into any of those) but you may be surprised that he wrote Home Alone and the original Vacation with Chevy Chase.  Personally my favorite was Ferris Bueller.  Anyone have a different favorite or favorite line?

Hughes had become rather reclusive and hasn’t directed in about 15 years so it was hard to come up with a reference shot of what he looks like.  So I had to cheat and have him face away but I left in his big iconic glasses.

On a side note, I am playing around with how I ink my toons. I see many cartoonists put a darker ink layer on the outside of their characters so I tried it out. Looks cool to me but also adds time to my drawing time per toon so I don’t know if I will do it each time.

  1. oh john. would there even have been such a thing as 80s movies without you?

i had no idea he wrote Home Alone, but see… thats what keeps me coming back here. it’s stuff like that. i love to collect useless knowledge, along with piles of unread books and unwritten journals.

    but alas, i digress.

wait, no i don’t. no i dont! you did not just win that argument!

p.s. i worked some magic for you over on my blog.

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hughes_(director) has his entire list. Wow there were some on there I forogt about.

    Mr Mom
    She’s having a Baby

I thought he only did the first vacation but it shows he wrote the sequels too. I wouldn’t take credit for those.

I was never into the brat club movies, although I did enjoy Pretty in Pink. I just LOVE Ferris Bueller. It’s one of my favorite comedies!

    • See…every thinks I am weird b/c I don’t know every line from the Breakfast Club.

      • I’ve seen them all but they were just movies in passing. I didn’t fawn over them like a lot of teenagers did back then. And I have to admit that I watched pretty in pink only because someone told me I looked like Molly Ringwald. I can’t remember what the movie is about though! I didn’t think the breakfast club was that great but I Did like the music. And I thought Ferris Bueller was funny.

I was in my 30’s when the movies came out, so I didn’t grow up with them. My kids were all very little, although they grew up watching all of them.

It’s okay that you’re not espcially fond of them, Claire. (Claire was Molly Ringwald’s name in Breakfast Club, btw.) We each have different tastes. That’s what makes everything interesting. 🙂

  4. MidwestMom says:

Oh I sure did get caught up in those 80’s teen movies and most girls I had as friends were also into them as well. My children look at me strangely when one of the brat pack movies come on and I will sit there and watch it, My oldest daughter who is 11 just rolls her eyes and leaves the room. but I agree with Bluntdelivery 80’s movie just would of not been the same with out John..

  5. Lynn says:

yes the different seems as though it does add definition to the cartoon itself. regarding john hughes…his best movie ever. Planes Trains and Automobiles!

  6. Danica says:

Aw, I think that’d put some of his fans at ease 🙂

  7. Nate Fakes says:

I always wish he would’ve came out with a Brunch Club movie

  8. frigginloon says:

Planes Trains and Automobiles…my favorite scene

Car Rental Agent: How may I help you?
Neal: You can start by wiping that fucking dumb-ass smile off your rosey, fucking, cheeks! Then you can give me a fucking automobile: a fucking Datsun, a fucking Toyota, a fucking Mustang, a fucking Buick! Four fucking wheels and a seat!
Car Rental Agent: I really don’t care for the way you’re speaking to me.
Neal: And I really don’t care for the way your company left me in the middle of fucking nowhere with fucking keys to a fucking car that isn’t fucking there. And I really didn’t care to fucking walk down a fucking highway and across a fucking runway to get back here to have you smile in my fucking face. I want a fucking car RIGHT FUCKING NOW!
Car Rental Agent: May I see your rental agreement?
    Neal: I threw it away.
    Car Rental Agent: Oh boy.
    Neal: Oh boy, what?
    Car Rental Agent: You’re fucked!

    Great cartoon BM!

Pretty in Pink, Breakfast Club and and Chevy’s Vacations were the only movies on speed dial in my VCR growing up. I always wanted to go to Wally World…and I wanted to make my own dress out of old material to wear when we got there…

  10. “No more yanky my wanky! The Donger need food!”)

    “Where is my automobeeel? automobeel?”

    “Fred… she’s gotten her boobies.”

“Can I borrow your panties for 10 minutes?”

“I can’t believe I gave my panties to a geek”

“Life moves pretty fast. You don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. “

    • wicked says:

There ya go! My favorite, SIXTEEN CANDLES. Just watched it again last night as a tribute.

      “Married?”

      “Married.”

      Married.”

      “Yeah, married.”

      “Married?”

      “Married. Sheesh!”

What female can resist a story where the average, nobody-notices girl gets THE guy?

  11. Love the last one from FB

  12. nursemyra says:

Ferris Bueller does it for me

  13. D. Long says:

    This cartoon is awesome.

Man, I need to dig out The Breakfast Club and watch it in his honor. May not be your favorite, but I can watch that on repeat. A childhood fave of mine.

  14. wicked says:

Good one, D. Long. My favorite is SIXTEEN CANDLES, which I watched last night.

I’m not sure if bear has links enabled for comments, but I discovered a blog of a woman who corresponded with John Hughes when she was young. It’s definetely worth reading and not terribly long.

    (crossing my fingers)

  15. “Oh, he’s very popular Ed. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads – they all adore him. They think he’s a righteous dude.”

  16. Sheila Deeth says:

I love the cartoon. All that teen angst up there…
My sons introduced me to Ferris Beuller last year and we all loved it.

  17. spilledinkguy says:

OHHH! That’s what I’ve got! Teen angst (except that my mowhawk is purple and I’m nearly thirty)! 🙂

  18. Phillyzero says:

RIP John Hughes, listened to Don’t You Forget About Me from TBC soundtrack 😛

  19. Bear, Can we see a panel with the extra ink and one without to compare? I think you should make them however makes you happy because just seeing them makes us happy!

  20. G says:

Personally, my fave was Home Alone 1, the other two I didn’t much care for.

And I agree with Claire, if you could do a before and after for comparison it would be much easier to critique.

  21. MidwestMom says:

I actually tried to do the lip stick thing that Molly Ringwald did in the Breakfast Club I came close but not as good as she did..

  22. George says:

John Hughes was the 80’s. How he was able to find the pulse of teen angst and reveal it to the world at the time is beyond me. He was visionary who will sorely be missed. You created a cool tribute!

  23. Lynn says:

sorry i missed this one. i’ve been swamped and trying to learn about html….i never get enough time to go out and browse my favs…i should get out more… this was a great post. times and creative…love it!
