  • Bearman Cartoon: Who Stole the McNuggets

Usually I only do 1-2 toons a week but this one was so timely, it couldn’t wait. I think this has to be one of my favorite editorial cartoons in a while. I love the story of the woman calling 911 three times because McDonalds wouldn’t give her money back when they were out of McNuggets. Now I don’t blame the woman for being pissed but come on…THREE TIMES.

This tells me that we haven’t done a good enough job advancing the use of 311…the non emergency three-digit number to contact the police.

But did they have to drag Ronald into all this.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Guest Toonist on Addanac City

One of my frequent visitors and a member of my blog roll is the creator of a great webtoon called Addanac City (where the heck he got the name Addanac from it don’t know – someone thought it was Canada backwards with an extra “d”).

Anyway, the main character of the cartoon is Hank.  I see Hank as a cross between Dennis the Menace and Bart Simpson.  He has Barts “eat me” attitude but sometimes the naivete of Dennis who does bad stuff but doesn’t always realize the effect he has on others.

After my guest cartoon run on Unemployed Dad, George (the mastermind behind Addanac) invited me to work on a guest cartoon for Addanac City in my editorial cartoon style.  Hank has a whacked out hairdo and I always questioned why.   So I came up with my own answer.

I’ll post it here tomorrow, but for now go visit AddanacCity.com  and see my take.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Employee Job Satisfaction

Thanks to Chiraq for his post that gave me the idea to create this editorial cartoon.

With the economy sucking wind, I don’t hear my friends complaining right now about their crappy jobs. Instead everyone is singing the praises of their company (at least to their boss) in hopes of making it through the next round of cuts.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Guest Toonist on Unemployed Dad

In a previous post, I talked about the web cartoon Unemployed Dad.  Michael graciously allowed me to be a guest cartoonist and do my typical editorial cartoon take on his characters.

I’ll post it here tomorrow but for now you can see it here.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Presidential Scare Tactics

This editorial cartoon came to me as I was listening to President Barack Obama’s speech in Elkhart, Indiana this past week.

“If we don’t act immediately, our nation will sink into a crisis that, at some point, we may be unable to reverse.”

That scare tactic, reminded me of the things then President George Bush said after September 11, in order to pass a strong Terror Bill.

I like the fact that he takes his message to the people and disagree with Robert Schlesinger that he can go to the well once too often and overuse this tactic.    But I am uncomfortable with words that intend to scare people into doing thing they wouldn’t otherwise.  On the other hand I think it is disingenuous for House/Senate Republican to call him out for fear mongering when Bush did it himself.  I, on the other hand, have all the rights to call anyone on this.

I am not sold on many of the elements of the  stimulus package.  I think much of the turmoil in the markets has been due to Wall Street and Businesses waiting to see if the government would pull the trigger to help save them rather than working on a plan to save themselves.  Personally I agree with an article I read in the Economist, that concluded that no matter if the stimulus package works or not, eventually the economy will turn around and Obama will get the credit.

BTW…for the two people who keep track…what do you think of my new Obama?

  • Drawing Barack Obama Cartoon Part 2

So the other day I wrote about trying to draw Barack Obama in cartoon form for future editorial cartoons.

I decided to scan just two of the many pages of doodles. None of them I was happy with but still a work in progress.

  • Drawing Barack Obama

I am one of those people who have little time for my hobby of drawing because the day job gets in the way.   So typically when I am doing one of my hack editorial cartoons, I am working in Photoshop with my Wacom board.  I wish I had the time to draw things out freehand, scan it and then ink in Photoshop because no matter how used to the Wacom I get, it doesn’t match what I can do with pen and paper.

Anyway, this week I find myself away from my Wacom and have several ideas running through my head.  So far I haven’t really liked how my caricatures of Barack Obama have come out and each one has looked completely different.  So for the past 3 hours I have been doing nothing but drawing Obamas face over and over.  Chin and Ears are easy…its the placement of everything else that just doesn’t seem right from image to image.  I finally got it so it is OK IMO.

Then what happens.  I am surfing the net and come across an article on Cagle Cartoons call “Obama 101” by Taylor Jones describing…HOW TO DRAW OBAMA.  WTF.  How come I didn’t do this first?

Ehh…I’ll stick with what I got.   To be revealed soon!!!

  • Bearman Cartoon: Jim Schifrin's Abandoned Ship

The Cincinnati Beacon, where I initially started posting my cartoons, has been aglow with attacks on Jim Schifrin who writes a local newsletter called the Whistleblower (See here and here). Personally I never read his stuff unless the Beacon (about yearly) goes after him for his ever apparent racist remarks.

Lately though it seems anyone with political office or political aspirations has been repudiating the things Schifrin writes just so they don’t get put in the same group as him.

Are his supporters telling him to lay off talking about their friendship or abandoning him all together?

  • Bearman Cartoon: Obama's Economic Recovery Plan

Today Tom Daschle announced he is pulling himself out of consideration for Secretary of Health and Human Services because he owed approx $120,000 in unpaid taxes. Right before that Nancy Killefer withdrew her name as potential Chief Performance Officer because of about $1000 in owed taxes.

And even new Treasury Secretary, Tim Geithner, somehow forgot to pay $34,000 yet still managed to get confirmed.

Many are blaming Obama for not vetting his nominees. But my editorial cartoon shows that maybe Obama was thinking about the economy and is just working his plan.

  • Bearman Cartoon: American Idol Send in the Clowns

    1 29 09 Bearman Cartoon American Idol

I am one of those people who only watch American Idol during the Audition Show. It’s painfully obvious the types of singers that go through.

    A. Sing a slower song because…
    B. 95% of the people they choose over do the vibrato in their voice.

In the past two weeks two contestants Rebecca Garcia and Naomi Sykes were called out because one of the judges thought their audition was a joke reducing the poor girls to tears. I am not the only one to notice. Vote for the Worst website, that pokes fun at the tactics Idol producers use, caught this.

There are plenty of good singers who don’t make it through because they pick a bad song and plenty of ok ones that make it through because they made better song choices.

Personally I liked Rockstar INXS and Supernova because they had people pick vote each week and the bottom were put on the block for the judges to boot off…so there was at least some semblance of who had talent.

Anyway, back to Idol, I don’t get why some people are so upset when they get booted. Don’t their friends and family tell them they aren’t that good. I think they should all get credit for having the guts to audition but do they think they will get a trophy like they did when they sucked at soccer as a kid just for showing up??
