  • Bearman Cartoon: 2012 and the End of Days AGAIN

Daryl Cagle has coined the term “Yahtzee” to refer to when 5 or more editorial cartoonists do the same gag. One he has ragged on in the past is using the “I’m with stupid” shirts on a cartoon. I have no idea who he is referring to..he he. In honor of that, I like to coin my own new phrase “Blue Ribbon.” When a cartoonist is the first to latch onto a new topic.

I did a 20 second search of google and haven’t found anything poking fun at the next set of conspiracy theory doomsday predictors – 2012. I saw the movie trailer this past week and thought it was well done. Then I made a trip to the bookstore and noticed all the books on the subject (even one that is a How To Survive 2012 book).

The basic gist is that there is a belief that because the Mayan calendar ends in December of 2012 that somehow they predicted the end of the world. One theory is that we will have a major catastrophe caused by the shifting of the North and South poles. I have even heard Nostradamus’ name thrown out. Didn’t he predict the end of days before during the turn of the century…didn’t come true. Sadly I think this will become worse than Y2K.

So if you see a 2012 editorial cartoon online somewhere that was published before mine, let me know and I’ll gladly hand over my Blue Ribbon.

  • Time Magazine Top 10 Editorial Cartoons of 2008 Sucks

Editorial cartoonists are up in arms with Time Magazine’s list of the Top 10 Editorial Cartoons of 2008.

Michael Cavna of the Washington Post thinks that the selection was made with their eyes closed. And Association of American Editorial Cartoonists president Ted Rall even fired off a letter to Time Magazine showing his own disgust saying “In 2008 hundreds of brilliant political cartoonists produced thousands of hard-hitting, thought-provoking and hilarious cartoons…and all you could come up with was this phoned-in crap?”

Now looking through the Time list, I would have to agree that most of the selections I wouldn’t include in a top 100 of my own list. And this is coming from someone who thinks his own stuff is mediocre at best.

But I find it amusing how invested people get in others “Best of” lists. Someone even suggested that the AAEC create their own best of list.

    Here is how I responded:

“what I was thinking was to submit a list of the 10 best editorial cartoons to Huffpost.”

And what makes you think your picks would be any less biased? Any top 10 list I have ever seen is full of crap and obviously biased or not well thought out. I just read Entertainment Weekly where they list the “Top Ten Most Notable Events of 2008″ Three of them are movie premieres. Seriously, the premiere of Sex and the City is one of the top ten of 2008?

Even if you post nominees and have people vote, what you end up with is still not the best. ie. Just because someone wins American Idol doesn’t make them the best singer in the competition.

Maybe it’s that people get hung up on the terminology that if someone creates a best of list that it is absolute and therefore insulting to anyone not on the list. Instead, maybe you create a post of “Ten Editorial Cartoons of 2008 that I Liked Best”

Maybe instead of Best of Lists, people should start creating Worst of Lists. I can’t see anyone complaining that they didn’t make the list.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Congressional Raises

Once again Congress will allow themselves a “cost of living” increase while their approval ratings and the economy are in the tank. This cartoon pretty much sums up the attitude.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Marvin Lewis & the Press

Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis got into a tiff about the team’s performance with a local Cincinnati Enquirer reporter at his weekly press conference.   At one point he told the reporter he wasn’t going to respond to his questions.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Illegal Immigration TO Mexico

Several articles (including one from USA Today) discuss the impact the economy is having on illegal immigration from Mexico. How long will it take for our economy to be worse and people start immigrating illegally OUT of the U.S.?

  • The death of the Newspaper Cartoonist

With all this talk of layoffs at daily newspapers all over the country, one position that doesn’t get much press is the editorial cartoonists. This Washington Post blog article brings the story to light. It even mentions Cincinnati’s own Jim Borgman as one who has been pushed out this year.

Will we soon see a group of middle aged men marching to Washington, ink and Wacom tablets in hand, looking for their own bailouts? Is this the death of the political cartoon as we know it?

  • Bearman Cartoon: Big Three Auto Execs return to Washington

The first time they came to Washington asking for a Bailout from Congress, they didn’t have a plan and came in private jets. What if this time they were serious?

What’s more, this article brings up an interesting point. When will Congress start cutting back on their travel and budgets?

  • Bearman "Retro" Cartoon: Shopping during the Holidays

This was one of the first cartoons I ever created back in December of 2005 for what became the Cincinnati Beacon.

I have no problem with whatever greeting people choose to use during the holidays. I just can’t stand when companies create a corporate mandate that says that an employee must say “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas” over the other. I would be happy to hear “Happy Kwanzaa” or “Happy Hanukkah” from someone assuming they meant it from the heart. I don’t take offense, I take it as someone wishing me well during the season. My only question is why aren’t they just as friendly the rest of the year.

I would like to think that my style and ability has improved a little.  But I am still a hack.

    Happy Holidays

  • Bearman Cartoon: Bengals Fan 2

It seems that the hope of a revival of the lowly Cincinnati Bengals two years ago has turned into the same old thing. While still holding out hope, surprised at the number of people who still are showing up to the games.
