  • Bearman Cartoon: The New Gordon Brown

So I usually post editorial cartoons that my UK and other international fans might not get because of the subject matter.  So in honor of them (NobblySan, WIB, etc), I thought I would post a cartoon that 99% of Americans won’t get.  Hey most can’t name the US Vice President.

It seems that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has survived a mutiny within his own party and has come out renewed as the “New Gordon Brown”.   Now I’ll be honest as I don’t know enough about his policies to create a cartoon that delves with issues.   I used to be an avid watcher of Prime Minister’s Questions when Tony Blair was PM.  The biting wit back and forth was priceless.  I would love to see VP Questions or even Secretary of State Questions done here.

Even though I don’t know much about Brown, I do know one thing.  I always find it humorous whenever a politician essentially tries to rebrand themselves.  In the end, it typically is just window dressing.

  • Bearman Cartoon: GM Too Big to Fail…

…but we don’t give a damn about the suppliers or dealers.

I hate that phrase that has been pushed around in the US with regards to Banks and the American Auto companies. I am all for capitalism but in my mind too big to fail means it is way too big and while the government shouldn’t put restrictions on growth they should install measures to protect pensions, etc of companies that size.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Sonia Sotomayor SCOTUS Nom

On this side of the pond, the Supreme Court of the United States is down a judge. When that happens, the President nominates a person to become the new Justice and Congress must approve the nominee. Of course depending on who is in power, the other side will never like the person (even if they do, they have to pound their fist so their constiuents will be proud).

So President Obama has nominated Sonia Sotomayor and charges from the far right are already coming out that she is a racist because of a speech she gave and her part in a ruling. Now I personally don’t care where you come down on whether or not she is or not. But really? This is the best strategy of opposing her??

I hate the political pundits and talking heads on both sides. Used to watch ’em but now I can’t stomach it. But Rachel Maddow from MSNBC had an interesting point. (hat tip to Chris Johnson for the video of it I saw) She said,

The question is why do this? And that’s a calculation about political capital. If you think you spend political capital by attacking the judicial nominee, it doesn’t seem like much use to waste that capital on someone who everybody thinks is going to get confirmed anyway. If on the other hand you think that you build up your political capital…you increase your political power by attacking a nominee then it makes sense to come after a Sonia Sotomayor with both political barrels. And, then it makes sense to ask what kind of Republican party and what kind of Conservative Movement is this fight building?

Personally I think the Conservatives are focusing on the wrong thing. Their best strategy is summed up in my latest editorial cartoon. They should be telling Liberals that they are excited about the nominee and especially the fact that she is Roman Catholic in hopes that she will rule to overturn Roe vs Wade (ie abortion laws).   Then watch the far left stumble over themselves to make sure to find out where she stands on abortion.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Susan Boyle

It seems even more people are enamored with Susan Boyle in the States than in Britain where she is competing in Britains Got Talent.    Got to thinking what could stop her.   Could it be people’s natural instinct to root for the underdog.  Now that she is the favorite, does that put her in a spot?

Now Bill at Comics I Don’t Understand might get on me for such an old reference, but on this side of the pond anyone over 20 probably knows about Nancy Kerrigan taking a hit in the knee from Tonya Harding’s then husband Jeff Gillooly and his friends.  Is the reference too old?

  • Bearman Cartoon: Adam Lambert and the American Idol Finale

I won dinner at Bootsy Collins restaurant because I called this one.   I usually only watch the audition shows of American Idol but with the advent of the DVR, I can watch an entire episode in about 10 minutes by bypassing all the boring stuff.  So it came down to the final three of Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and Danny Gockey.

Kris and Danny had too similar taste in music so I knew that whichever of them got booted, the other would pick up the majority of their votes.  And of course, as usual, I was right.

While I loved Adam’s singing of Mad World, can you all get off his jock about the arrangement.  He didn’t do it.  He took Michael Andrew’s arrangement from the Donnie Darko soundtrack.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Bar-Be-Q the Organist

Its seems in the small Town of Reading, Ohio (near Cincinnati), Kenny Tessel was having trouble drawing in patrons to his barbecue restaurant (KT’s Barbecue). So he bought a busty mannequin online, named her Bar-Be (Q being her last name), put her in a baseball hat and bikini top and stuck her on the sidewalk in front of his place with a sign.

All of the sudden people were coming in for tasty ribs that hadn’t stopped before. In fact according to Kenny business was up 30%. More on the story here and here. Of course his business went up even more once a couple residents complained and the story has taken on national attention.

So I thought maybe there are other businesses that could use a jolt of new customers using this tactic and came up with my latest editorial cartoon.

  • Bearman Editorial Cartoon: Manny Ramirez

It seems like Wrestling and Baseball have the biggest issues with performance enhancing drugs. Does it go on as much in other sports and if so, why is it downplayed in the press?

  • Retro Bearman Cartoon: Chris Daughtry American Idol

Chris Daughtry made his triumphant return to the American Idol stage last night.  Reminded me of this editorial cartoon I did 3 years ago when he was booted off.  Everyone was crying about Voter Fraud.   As shown season after season, the winner of American Idol or even the ones who make it to the top 24 aren’t necessarily the best singers.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Shadow Hare

There is a phenomenon going on over on this side of the pond. Much like the Watchmen (see my toon if you haven’t already), there are people getting together who have no superpower, dressing up as a unique superhero and patrolling the streets. In fact there is an entire World Superhero Registry.

Cincinnati has its own resident superhero that goes by the name of SHADOW HARE. The world has been abuzz (see here, here and here) every since local reporter Eric Flack did stories on him. (See original story videos here and here).

Superman has his Kryptonite so I figured I had to draw an editorial cartoon on what I think Shadow Hare’s nemesis would be.
