    This is why I draw

    I draw to entertain,

I draw to make you laugh,

I draw to make you think.

I draw to make you question your own beliefs,

I draw to make you understand others’ beliefs,

I draw to make you stand up for your beliefs.

I draw to give attention to the unknown,

I draw to give meaning to the unexplanable,

I draw to give a voice to the unheard.

    This is why I draw.

I do not draw to make you hate me.  I do not draw to make you think there is no other option but to try and quiet my voice through acts of threats and violence.

My deepest condolences to those cartoonists and others who lost their lives today in Paris at Charlie Hebdo.  Je Suis Charlie (I am Charlie).

  • Comic Con now Hollywood Con? – Cartoon

Bearman Cartoon How Hollywood took over Comic-Con

Something painfully obvious I know but this article in the LA Times (hat tip to Alan of the Daily Cartoonist) laments the takeover each year of Comic-Con by Hollywood elite hoping to get a strong internet buzz for their latest endeavors.

For those who go, do you feel the loss of the way it used to be or is it better for smaller exhibitors because what you lose in focus you make up because if the sheer number of people.

I have never been to a comic convention and even with the proliferation of webcartoonists that exhibit at them these days, I will probably not ever be one of them.  Face it, political cartoon compilations are not what fanboys are clamoring for.  Maybe if there’s ever a newsie-con, I’ll be setting up shop between Rachel Maddow and Glenn Beck who are there trying to hock their own books.

  • Cartoonists Needed around the Web

Our good friend George of Addanac City is looking for guest cartoonists to run in June.  Bastard beat out my own request by 5 days.  Look for my request on Sunday or Monday to coincide with thd 2010 version of the Bearman Charity Challenge.

And speaking of Charity I got word of another cartoonist looking for help raising money for charity as well.  Yamino of Sister Claire, is trying to get as many cartoonists to submit a series of 10 limited edition postcards of their characters to auction off for charity.

Finally Byron is taking an extended Spring Break from 1977 the comic and also is looking for Guest Strips to fill the void.

  • Call for Cartoonists

I am putting out a general call and a specific one to anyone with the desire to have their work seen here for all my tens of readers.

First the specific call.  I am going to be doing a work project that will keep me busy as hell starting late August for about a month, so my own postings will be sporadic.  There are those who get mad when I go two days without posting something so I thought I would put it out there as a challenge to all of you with a webcomic.  You may have seen my post titled Bearman at 100 and I would like to put out a similar challenge.

Cartoon Challenge: What will your comic character look like at age 100?

Don’t cheat and draw them dead.  It can either be in strip form, single panel or just artwork.  Just keep the width to under 550 pixels.  I’d like to get the majority of them by August 15 so I can pre publish them and have them show up every 2-3 days.

You can either load them to your images and send me a URL to link to the image or email me the image.  Either way send to BearmanCartoons (at) Yahoo.com.  Also if you have a link to a web banner that you would like me to include with the post, send that as well.  Make sure to include your name and a little description of your webcomic.

The second call is to anyone ongoing who wants to do a editorial guest cartoon.  My focus is on politics and pop culture.  While I am pretty open about what I will include, I won’t publish anything I deem inappropriate.

  • The death of the Newspaper Cartoonist

With all this talk of layoffs at daily newspapers all over the country, one position that doesn’t get much press is the editorial cartoonists. This Washington Post blog article brings the story to light. It even mentions Cincinnati’s own Jim Borgman as one who has been pushed out this year.

Will we soon see a group of middle aged men marching to Washington, ink and Wacom tablets in hand, looking for their own bailouts? Is this the death of the political cartoon as we know it?
