  • Why Editorial Cartoons Have no Shelf Life

So the above is a reason why Editorial Cartoonists can’t create a buffer of cartoons to keep on hand to post at a time when they have nothing else to post or are busy with real life.  I created this one right after the Cincinnati Reds won the National League Central Division and went to the playoffs for the first time in 15 years.

Of course there was celebration of beer, champagne and cigars in the team’s clubhouse.  Well, the state of Ohio has a smoking ban for public places and it seems some concerned citizens felt it their duty to report this violation to the authorities.  Not a smoker, nor have I, but I thought this was just petty.  I bet they were Philly fans.

Well after the highs of that week came the following week which led to this cartoon.

The next weekend the Reds were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Bengals lost for the second week in a row to teams they were supposed to easily beat.

I would have posted them on their dates but other news items seemed more relevant and noteworthy at the time so these kept getting pushed back.

Now they seem somewhat dated.  So instead of creating cartoon buffers, I am left to post nothing if and when I ever get writer’s block.

  • Jerry Dowlings Bengals Book Now Available

In the beginning of the year, I posted about Cincinnati editorial and sports cartoon legend Jerry Dowling publishing a book highlighting his Pete Rose cartoons over the years.

Well thanks to info from the Cincinnati Illustrators Blog it looks like Jerry is at it again with his new book, Drawing Super Wars: The Early Years of the Bengals available at Amazon and the publisher Edgecliff Press (Click on the title at Edgecliff and you can see all the pages of the book – but of course you need to buy it).  Local Bengals Fans can meet Jerry tomorrow at the  Books by the Banks event.

Also there will be another local legend Tom Wilson who does Ziggy and wrote a great book  “Zig-Zagging: Loving Madly, Losing Badly: How Ziggy Saved My Life”

Not going to be there but future Cincinnati cartoon legend David Wilborn also has a book out with collections of his great Urban Jungle web cartoon.  Check him out if you get the chance.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Bengals Beat Steelers

Sorry for my focus on American Football toons as of late but the Cincinnati Bengals have not beaten the Pittsburgh Steelers at home in eight years. Sunday they finally won and my friends in Pittsburgh deserve a little payback for all the years that they beat on us.

For the uninformed, the Bengal Tiger obviously represents the bengals.  Pittsburgh fans carry en masse a towel that is printed with the words “terrible towel” to games at home and away.   The towel is now synonymous with the Steelers.
