  • Bearman Cartoon: Comic Strip Improv

There is a new site out there called Comic Strip Improv. Essentially each week they put up a topic and ask people (no matter their drawing ability) to do a cartoon based on the topic.

This weeks topic was Scary Girlfriend. Here is my entry but go and check out all of them and vote starting tomorrow. There are some really good ones.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Swine Flu

Thanks to George Ford at Addanac City comic for supplying the idea behind this editorial cartoon.  I was just thinking of what to do around the swine flu when he emailed me with this idea.  Thankfully he didn’t have the time to (pink) flesh it out so I got to.

I may post another idea I had later in the week (or I might not).

  • Bearman Cartoon: Top Movies of the Weak

OK…the drought is over.  As promised here is a new cartoon.   Looking at the top of the box office charts, the number one and two movies in the US this past week were the Fast and Furious and Hannah Montana.

What does it say about us?

  • Bearman Cartoon: New way to bailout the Banks

As the banking industry continues to stumble given the latest earnings reports, their stock takes hit after hit. I thought at what point could I just take my meager earnings and buy one of them out. End result…this editorial cartoon.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Kevin Bacon bilked by Bernard Madoff

Drew this editorial cartoon after reading on the Huffington Post that Kevin Bacon was one of the unfortunate victims of the Ponzi Scheme of Bernard Madoff. (see here and here for other accounts)

My dad always said to be skeptical of anything that seemed too good to be true. This guy was pulling in unprecedented returns year after year and none of his clients were suspicious. At the very least the lesson learned should be don’t invest all your dough with one entity. Some of us aren’t talented (or lucky) enough to make a couple million for 6 months work on a movie set.

Anyway, those familiar with LinkedIn know that it is a professional networking site. If Bob is connected to Jill, they are one degree of separation. If Jill is connected to Monica, then Bob and Monica are two degrees of separation. It is much like the old college game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon”. So I figured Kevin might have something to trade for some work.

BTW, Kevin is on Linkedin (at least someone claiming to be him) and I am 3 degrees of separation.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Larry Flynt wants a Bailout

This week Hustler Magazine Publisher Larry Flynt and Girls Gone Wild guy Joe Francis announced at a press conference that the Porn industry needs an economic bailout. See Here, here and here.

Well my latest cartoon thinks if Larry takes a certain angle, he might be able to get it. Insert your own joke here (ex “these hard times”, “flaccid economy”…etc etc)

  • Retro Cartoon: Gays vs Felons in the Military

Speaking of Newsweek, in the most current edition they have an article about the potential end (but seemingly unlikely) of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy when it comes to gays in the service.

This was interesting because in 2007 I was reading articles about the number of “Moral Waivers” were on the rise. Essentially someone convicted of a felony could get a waiver to join the military. I found this odd that the military was OK with felons but not homosexuals serving openly in the army, navy, air force, and marine corp. So back then I drew the below cartoon that was published in November 2007 edition of the now defunct Cincinnati Beacon monthly paper.

  • Bearman Cartoon: 2012 and the End of Days AGAIN

Daryl Cagle has coined the term “Yahtzee” to refer to when 5 or more editorial cartoonists do the same gag. One he has ragged on in the past is using the “I’m with stupid” shirts on a cartoon. I have no idea who he is referring to..he he. In honor of that, I like to coin my own new phrase “Blue Ribbon.” When a cartoonist is the first to latch onto a new topic.

I did a 20 second search of google and haven’t found anything poking fun at the next set of conspiracy theory doomsday predictors – 2012. I saw the movie trailer this past week and thought it was well done. Then I made a trip to the bookstore and noticed all the books on the subject (even one that is a How To Survive 2012 book).

The basic gist is that there is a belief that because the Mayan calendar ends in December of 2012 that somehow they predicted the end of the world. One theory is that we will have a major catastrophe caused by the shifting of the North and South poles. I have even heard Nostradamus’ name thrown out. Didn’t he predict the end of days before during the turn of the century…didn’t come true. Sadly I think this will become worse than Y2K.

So if you see a 2012 editorial cartoon online somewhere that was published before mine, let me know and I’ll gladly hand over my Blue Ribbon.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Congressional Raises

Once again Congress will allow themselves a “cost of living” increase while their approval ratings and the economy are in the tank. This cartoon pretty much sums up the attitude.

  • Bearman Cartoon: Illegal Immigration TO Mexico

Several articles (including one from USA Today) discuss the impact the economy is having on illegal immigration from Mexico. How long will it take for our economy to be worse and people start immigrating illegally OUT of the U.S.?
