  • Retro Editorial Cartoon: Halloween and Politicians

October 31 around here doesn’t only mean Halloween. It means an election is right around the corner. This is the time the politicians and lobbyists pick it up on the rhetoric, scare tactics and door-to-door visits. I did this one in 2007.

  • Retro Cartoon: Art?

Quick post today of a toon I did back in 2007. The premise was some publically funded art done in Cincinnati that looked like sea sponges. There was a big todo about spending public money on it. Thus came this editorial cartoon.

  • Retro Bearman Cartoon: Chris Daughtry American Idol

Chris Daughtry made his triumphant return to the American Idol stage last night.  Reminded me of this editorial cartoon I did 3 years ago when he was booted off.  Everyone was crying about Voter Fraud.   As shown season after season, the winner of American Idol or even the ones who make it to the top 24 aren’t necessarily the best singers.

  • Retro Bearman Cartoon: Hypocrites

Drew this editorial cartoon back in 2006 and titled it hypocrites. Can’t remember what spurred me in the news to do this.  But I do remember my conservative friends commenting on it and arguing that the person on death row had a choice based on his actions.

  • Retro Cartoon: Fuck Global Warming

As I am nursing my back from shoveling snow and preparing to shovel ice and snow today, it reminded me of a cartoon I did back in 2007 when it was hot as hell out. I know, I know…they don’t call it Global Warming anymore…it is now “Climate Change.”

  • Retro Cartoon: Gays vs Felons in the Military

Speaking of Newsweek, in the most current edition they have an article about the potential end (but seemingly unlikely) of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy when it comes to gays in the service.

This was interesting because in 2007 I was reading articles about the number of “Moral Waivers” were on the rise. Essentially someone convicted of a felony could get a waiver to join the military. I found this odd that the military was OK with felons but not homosexuals serving openly in the army, navy, air force, and marine corp. So back then I drew the below cartoon that was published in November 2007 edition of the now defunct Cincinnati Beacon monthly paper.

  • Retro Bearman Cartoon: New Year's Optimist

I drew this cartoon last year at this time for what had by that time unfortunately became the defunct experiment of The Cincinnati Beacon website to create a monthly print edition.

Looking back, it is amazing how much worse 2008 really was compared to 2007 for many. But I am still thankful for many things as we go into 2009. May you all have a healthy, happy, and employed 2009.

  • Bearman "Retro" Cartoon: Shopping during the Holidays

This was one of the first cartoons I ever created back in December of 2005 for what became the Cincinnati Beacon.

I have no problem with whatever greeting people choose to use during the holidays. I just can’t stand when companies create a corporate mandate that says that an employee must say “Happy Holidays” or “Merry Christmas” over the other. I would be happy to hear “Happy Kwanzaa” or “Happy Hanukkah” from someone assuming they meant it from the heart. I don’t take offense, I take it as someone wishing me well during the season. My only question is why aren’t they just as friendly the rest of the year.

I would like to think that my style and ability has improved a little.  But I am still a hack.
