Imitation Crab

9 16 13 Bearman Cartoons Imitation CrabSo today’s cartoon was inspired by eating some imitation crab over the weekend, which of course made me wonder what fish tastes like crab.  Well actually none.   The primary ingredient is Alaska Pollock (which is also the primary type of fish used in many fast food restaurants “fish” entrees).   Then it gets processed to hell with flavorings, colorings and other things I can’t explain.   But in the end, it is tasty!!

Any crab (imitation or otherwise) lovers out there?

  1. It’s OK and none of the stuff they do to it is toxic, AFAIK. A good way to transition kids into seafood. No giant bugs on your plate and no twiddly digging for the meat. But it don’t taste like crab.

  2. David Hurley says:

I don’t eat that much crab meat, I do like it though. The best way to go is get fresh crab meat. And it seems so much processed food is bad for you.

  3. Bill Murphy says:

I’m told imitation crab meat is actually a soy product. But I like both soy and imitation crab meat. 😀

I don’t know of a fish that tastes like crab, but there is a fish that tastes like lobster. It’s called Monk Fish. It’s really ugly and looks like brain pieces. But if you dip it in butter, it has a lobster quality to it. 😉

  4. Same thing happened to me when I entered the Miss America Contest.

  5. I’ve eat tons of imitation crab meat.
Not to alarm you, or anything.
Just something to keep in mind.

  6. benzeknees says:

Love crab, but it’s a lot of work to get to the meat, so I’ll take pollock any time. First found out about this wonderful substitute through Subway & have loved it ever since.

  7. Comedy Plus says:

I love crab very much. Imitation crab I can pass on. Not that great. Much cheaper though.

    Have a terrific day. 🙂

  8. Mark Stokes says:

I saw a big square of imitation crab in the seafood section of my local grocer the other day and asked: ” How do they make this stuff?” They had no answer. Weird.

  9. lisleman says:

I don’t like crab meat so imitation would make no sense for me. However that’s a funny idea for a cartoon.

  10. Julian says:

The first time I had crab cakes was with my wife. I told her I thought my throat was constricting. She was not amused.

    And they were YUMMY!

  11. Tony McGurk says:

A timely cartoon as I actually had some in a seafood pasta salad on the weekend. Lottsa prawns & fake crab. I like the stuff. For many years I thought it was real crab. I actually think it’s nicer than real crab

  12. frigginloon says:

The imitation red color scares me 😯 I want to know why they make it look fake?

  13. Binky says:

    I prefer non-fake non-fishy 100% real chocolate.

  14. Gruhn says:

Your fish had me fooled. As long as it tastes close, I’ll eat it.

  15. duncanr says:

Fake or real, crab is one of those foods I have an irrational aversion to – despite never having eaten any 😳

    P.S. Love the cartoon !

  16. Lynn Vee says:

Excellent artwork Bear! Wanna help decorate a school in the jungle? I like my crab fresh and flung (like a Bronze God) right out of the Gulf of Thailand. .

  17. Joseph says:

My wife, kids and I love to eat lobster and crab meat. Imitation crab is OK. But I can’t enjoy it knowing that it could have lots of artificial flavorings and such. We do our best to eat organic even though it’s more expensive.

  18. Bo Lumpkin says:

I like crab meat and artificial crabmeat both. When they try to pawn artificial catfish on me though I will draw the line.
The catfish they import from China and Viet Nam is toxic. Good catfish comes from a river or pond in the good old USA.
    BTW… Love the toon.

  19. George Ford says:

I love the taste of crab meat! I cannot stand trying to pick a crab apart however. That frustrates me to no end. I’m just as happy eating a crab salad sandwich. I’ve never seen the big deal about lobster, though. They don’t have enough taste to me.

  20. Dave says:

I don’t care for imitation crab but I do enjoy Long John Silver’s fish. I especially enjoy the cripsies, whatever the heck those are.

  21. Beverly says:

I used to think imitation crab meat was the bomb until I moved closer to the ocean and out of the mid-west. Now, it’s got to be the real thing! I love crab meat. King is “king” and Dungeness Crab is very close second. I love going out and catching them Dungies and filling my freezer with them. And, agreed, imitation don’t taste anything like real crab meat.
    Love your cartoon! Thanks!

  22. DadaHyena says:

Check out a cephalopod species called the mimic octopus (there’s videos on YouTube). You will never trust a denizen of the ocean again.

  23. jande says:

Ok, Bearman, THAT is the CUTEST cartoon EVAH!. I totally love it! Thank you! ;`D

  24. Nef says:

I think you have every opinion represented already. Mine is that I love imitation crab, but am not too fond of the real thing.

    There…

  25. Andro says:

So that’s what crab paste is,
    Pollock Surprise… Who Knew? 🙁

This is a fantastic cartoon Bearman 🙂

    Andro

  26. Tony McGurk says:

This conversation came up at work today at lunch time. One bloke reckons that it’s made from Tripe.
If that’s true then all I can say is Gag, gag, gag…
