Editorial Cartoon: Bloomberg Soda Ban

Editorial Cartoon Michael Bloomberg Soda Ban

The Cartoonist Studio Editorial Cartoon Contest continues.  Click the image above or here to go to the voting.  You should do a search of “Bearman” and my cartoon will come up front and center and then vote.  Some people were clicking the link and then accidentally voting on the first thing that popped up.  Unfortunately no way to direct link to my cartoon.  In fourth place in the voting after the first entry so thanks to all who voted.   Again, as long as I stay in the contest, there will be two editorial cartoons a week to vote on – Mondays and Thursdays.   Oh and you can vote multiple times in each round if you want (resets every six hours) until EOD Friday.

Today’s editorial cartoon is inspired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.  His latest crusade is against the Big Gulp aka any sugary drinks (soda, pop, soft drink, coke, Hi-C….whatever you like to call it in your neck of the world) bigger than 16oz being sold in restaurants and other retail establishments.  His reasoning is that those high caloric drinks contribute to obesity.  Question is where does it stop?  And do you seriously think it means people will drink less?  Hell no, they will just go back for more refills in a restaurant or just buy two in the drive thru.  Instead of super sizing for $.50 more, I can see many restaurants offering buy one get one for $.50, because people still want their vat of soft drink.  What say you?  Good idea or Nanny State?

  1. George says:

Even if you made food illegal, there would still be obesity. There’s no way that any governing body is gonna be able to regulate what is more or less a personal choice.

    • Bearman says:

Seriously…I could get fat on salad. You know how fattening dressing is!!

      • Red says:

George is right. People are going to buy what they want and eat as much as they want. It is not like the 50s where everyone just ate what they needed to survive. Remember, we are all “entitled” to as much as we can eat.
        Red.

  2. Hey voted and left a comment 🙂
    All the very best 🙂

  3. nursemyra says:

woo hoo! I managed to vote this time too

  4. coasterbear says:

Voted for you. Just be on your best, it looks like you got some good ocmpetetion out there.

Think your multitudes of followers know they can vote every 12 hours? And if they did not fix the loophole from last time, your vote can go to the same cartoonist every time, so you could get multiple votes from the same person for each cartoon.

Not that I would EVER suggest rigging an election……

  5. I don’t think regulating big gulps is gonna fix anything. If you are a real soda addict you can just order 2 regular ones. I know a gentleman who went 100% grain free and got fatter. The massive substitution of chocolate gram for gram for bread did it I think.

  6. P.S. the comment above mine MAY be a spam. It is pretty generic.

  7. Comedy Plus says:

People need to quit regulating our food and drinks. Parents should be doing that and if one is an adult then they should have good sense. Alas, many don’t and you can’t do a thing about that. I think Bloomberg has gone too far, but that’s what he usually does.

    Have a terrific day. 🙂

    • Bearman says:

Tanks Sander. Though as I have said I wholly support his making restaurants publish the fat and calories on the menu. I like having an informed choice

  8. You can ban it, but unless the culture changes, I don’t think it matters.

  9. Deb says:

Voted for you on this one too, Bearman! 🙂

  10. Makes me want to replace everything in his fridge with broccoli.
    Bon Appetit, big brother.
    🙂

  11. (I meant to say in Bloomberg’s fridge…)

  12. Scholar Mel says:

His time could be spent doing something more productive.

I personally never understood washing down hamburger and fries with 16oz of pop. That would make me feel sick.

  13. Mark Stokes says:

Oh, if it was only as easy to take off as it was to put on! Love those fat fingers!

  14. Jande says:

    Awesome gross cartoon Bearman!

Did you guys know that Thyroid disease can cause obesity? True fact. The Thyroid regulates certain hormones in the body that create and breakdown fats (among other things). For some, no matter how much they diet and exercise they get fat anyway due to the disease. So on that note, if you know someone who eats very little, exercises a lot and still keeps gaining, get them in for a Thyroid blood test fast!

I don’t agree with Government restricting people’s personal choices. They should instead regulate the corporate industries that create the offensive foods.

  15. Bearman says:

I don’t think either should be regulated beyond is it safe. However not hiding what is in it is where I would like to see the industry go

Yes my mother and sister deal with thyroid issues. Sometimes too it has the reverse effect and you are constantly tring to gain. I sadly don’t have that issue so it is diet and exercise for me

  16. Red says:

Okay, so once I finally got the CS API to respond (Ugh!), I cast a few votes for you and tapped a couple people on the shoulder to follow suit. 😉
    Red.

  17. Get ready for a Big ‘wait.’

  18. Binky says:

I voted, but they only let you vote once every so many hours. But all the Wombies wanted to vote!

I think posting the calories and fat content on the menus would have an effect for a lot of people. I think most simply have no idea how many calories are in the restaurant foods they consume.

  19. Friggin Loon says:

I’d just buy two of the next size down. Rebellious, I know!!!!

  20. G. B. Miller says:

I think that New York is in a dead heat with California on who can be the biggest, wimpiest Nanny State in the country.

I really don’t like people telling me what I can or can’t do, and eventually, when push comes to shove, I just might do something to show people just how freakin’ stupid these laws are.

Quick example: I work near a hospital. Last year they banned smoking on all of their complexes. People use the hospital complex as a shortcut to get to other parts of the city while walking. While they can threaten their employees with unemployment, I would love to see them try to threaten the average citizen who walks through their complex sucking on a cigarette.

    • Bearman says:

I was against the smoking ban in bars and restaurants when it came to the vote in Ohio several years ago. But as a non smoker I love the results

      • G. B. Miller says:

I think that there are pluses and minuses to the smoking ban that they got here (yeah, I’m a non-smoker), but trying to regulate it outside where people who don’t work at the complex come and go as they please, is a little over the top.

However, they do have a few exceptions to the ban, one of which is that the two Indian reservations allow smoking inside their buildings.

  21. Nate Fakes says:

I’m surprised there’s not a drinking age for pop there as well.

    • Bearman says:

There is. It is called parental control

      • DadaHyena says:

Parents should enforce it. I was drinking way too much soda as a kid. My younger brother used to, and actually still does, drink anywhere from three to five Cokes at dinner.

        • Bearman says:

As a kid you got to drink pop:

          – When we had company
          – On New Years
          – If you got in bed my dad would come around and give you ONE sip of his drink. That was it till I was 12.

  22. DadaHyena says:

It’s a noble cause, but gluttony is just something you can’t regulate. Like you said, if a person wants to drink a gallon on soda, they’ll do it one way or another, whether it’s in a gallon sized cup or a bunch of smaller ones.

  23. Binky says:

Hey, Bearman, you can get a sneak peak at the fan art video with your Binky portrait in it at http://youtu.be/4nGB-qYhpX4

  24. Androgoth says:

Voting for the next round starts on Monday so I will call back and vote for you on your morrow, here it is already Monday but no problemo your art deserves a first not a fourth 🙂 Have a great start to your week Bearman 🙂

    Androgoth

  25. Scott says:

Good intentions on Bloomberg’s part. But unfortunately healthy eating cannot be legislated.

  26. Jenn says:

I say good idea! Whenever we go to the states, it always surprises how much bigger all their food is! It’s a delight for our tastebuds, but we’re always grateful to come back to Canada and eat our non buttery dishes!

  27. Tony Mcgurk says:

With that teensy coke the weight will fall off quick as long as you don’t eat the plate of food. Definitely Nanny State. People have to take responsibility for their own actions. People insist on overindulging then complain about being fat. I was the same but then canned all the junk, ate healthier & started working out with weights & cardio. Have dropped from 86kg to 72kg. No idea what that is in pounds but I feel so good for it & so much more energy.

  28. blunt says:

    hahahah. oh gees.

whats with this country anyway. we need to ban everything or we’re gonna have to start building cranes in the hospitals.
