Editorial Cartoon: Greece Mathematics

11-6-11-Bearman-Editorial-Cartoon Greece Mathematics

Today’s editorial cartoon is inspired by the financial crisis in Greece.   Where is Pythagoras when you need him? How is it that a culture that is known for their advancement in certain areas falls away from what made them great?

Many would argue the same is happening in America today.

  1. The actual math behind money is fairly simple, it tends to become complex because of the personal and political greed. Great strip!

    • Bearman says:

“The actual math behind money is fairly simple” Tell that to my friends who don’t know how much to put in when the restaurant bill comes. hah

  2. Comedy Plus says:

Yep in some ways this is happening in America. People need jobs and hope. Right now many have neither. It’s a vicious cycle.

    Have a terrific day. 🙂

  3. Comedy Plus says:

Oh and thanks for your kind words this morning. I’m not taking that post down, but you already know that I wouldn’t. It sure has started some conversations. 🙂

    • Bearman says:

And you shouldn’t. Someone can be offended by what you say and choose not to visit but they don’t have the right to order you to take down a post. Otherwise my blog would be empty.

      • nursemyra says:

Do people ask you to take down posts bearman? I’m glad you don’t listen. this one is particularly funny.

        • Bearman says:

No Myra. Sandee from Comedy Plus posted a joke (as she always does) that poked fun at one particular group that a reader took offense to and asked her to take it down. If you know Sandee, you know she would not intentionally hurt anyone but at the same time she posts jokes about all backgrounds so I am glad she didn’t give into the pressure.

  4. MC/Curtis says:

So Greece is responsible for math eh?!
    I hate math!
Storm the castle type arena thing!
Kill the toga guy and the gladiator!!
    Smash the Olympics!!!

  5. G says:

I agree with the first commentater in that massive greed and cronyism did Greece in. The problem is that because its so pervasive and so montrously deep and wide that no one wants to really fix it. To fix it would mean that the current form of economic chaos isn’t working and that the people who shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of the economic mismanagment and meltdown will.

    • Bearman says:

I don’t have all the details on what is going on in Greece but I have seen several reports of what you stated. It’s living with the bad of the known versus fear of the unkwown.

  6. Tony McGurk says:

I agree with the previous Warren & G.
GREED is the big problem the world over. While I can understand the motivation & reasons for the “OCCUPY” protests I can’t see the big wealthy companies & individuals at the top of the food chain changing their ways because other people don’t like what they are doing. Greed will keep things just as they are. The economic situations happening around the world will worsen & the greedy wealthy will sit back & continue to haul in the big bucks with no regard fr the financial & economic consequences.
(Prophecy According to Tony Chapter 6 Verses 9-12)

    • Bearman says:

I need to get the bible according to Tony.

Part of it is in some areas we have gone way beyond filling basic needs and now it is a jealousy thing. In other areas we are woefully behind in filling the needs because attention is given to the wrong things.

  7. Bo Lumpkin says:

I have something that most of the greedy people can never have. I have enough. BTW Wealthy people aren’t the only people who are greedy.

    • Bearman says:

Everyone wants something that their neighbor has and they don’t. Even if it is non material things. As much as we don’t want to be jealous, there is always something we are jealous of.

  8. A squared plus B squared = your final balance… right?!
    🙂

  9. DadaHyena says:

No wonder the Greek gods all disappeared…they went broke!

Can you imagine Zeus waiting in line for unemployment?

  10. Bo Lumpkin says:

The Ancient Greeks went broke too, when they created a democracy. Just like in America people will vote the people in who offer to give them the most. Yep, we might be headed down the path of Ancient Greece instead of Modern Greece.

  11. Scholar Mel says:

I hope that Greece drags the Euro into the mud so it is easier to live in Europe. I live in Europe but my dollars is exchanged to Euros… it is killing me. 🙁

  12. Friggin Loon says:

How much is Greece going for? Maybe China could buy it?

  13. Jenn says:

Great strip, there’s so much symbolism I see you have in that one panel. I often wonder what will happen to the states in a couple of years, and how will that affect our image of them in the ‘glory years’.

  14. George says:

Shucks, the only thing I can add IS money. I just wish I could get more practice.

  15. Binky says:

Maybe Greece could sell off some of its ancient temples & art to finance a recovery.

  16. I think it is horrible what has happened over there in Greece. There has been too much of this going around lately.

  17. A very clever joke! Well done 😀

  18. planetross says:

Why is the Ottoman Empire known for selling rugs now?

note: Greece kind of lost it after they got rid of the toga.

  19. lisleman says:

good irony with your cartoon. Good thing “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” came out when it did. It might go over too well now. Maybe they should focus on the wedding industry and rent themselves out. They know how to party.

  20. Binky says:

If Greece got royalties on Greek yogurt, they probably wouldn’t have this problem.

  21. I think Italy is the next big source for trouble… but leave to the Italians to copy the Greeks! 😀

  22. I’m so glad that by the time I was old enough to have a checking account, to find out the balance all I had to do was go to an ATM.
