Bearman Cartoon: Obama and Carter

I firmly believe that there are people who oppose President Obama and everything he stands for simply because of the color of his skin. As Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post does, I would tend to throw most of the “birthers” in that group (these are the people who say Obama shouldn’t be President because they think he wasn’t born in the United States).

But former President Jimmy Carter does nothing to further real work done in race relations or even bring to light real racist attitudes toward the current President, when he said, “I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man.” An “overwhelming portion”???

It is a huge disservice to the sitting President to make a comment like that.  So now instead of opposing plans and creating dialogue about it, Obama’s foes will simply oppose everything without dialogue for fear of being charged with racism.

On the other hand the Right doesn’t do a good job of protecting themselves against charges of racism. When 5% of a anti-Obama policy rally contains racist imagery or signage and there isn’t a strong stance within the group itself to weed those people out, it is no wonder that those are the people that end up on the news.

I like what Bill Clinton had to say in response and would be more in line with my thinking:  “I believe that while it is true that some of the most extreme opponents of President Obama may also still have racial prejudice, I believe that 100 percent of those who are opposing him now would be against him if he were a white Democrat.”

Much like Joe Wilson disrupted the President’s address, Carter is distrupting the President’s agenda. Jimmy does a great job of building houses.  He should stick with that.

Hey Bearman, thanks for visiting my site and leaving a comment. Bryan Fuller is a genius, and the television he has created has been some of the best. I’m glad to hear that someone besides me actually saw Wonderfalls. I think that brings the total to eight. I truly miss that work of art.

  2. I would have to agree with you. If you put race out of the equation, the argument made over and over sounds a lot like political party line junk-o-rama. Carter IMHO is stating what he believes but it is obviously based on anecdotal evidence. As always funny cartoon and it make me think a bit too. ..Thanks

My God! The finger pointing. One would not be too far wrong to hazard a guess some strange conspiracy has started to emerge . . . or not. Carter does look a bit like Dave, though. Come to think of it, isn’t that a blue cardigan he’s wearing?

  4. frigginloon says:

Good to see you got those fingers pointing Bearman 🙂 But the dude in the audience ain’t got a mouth. Bearman got his tongue? When will the Republicans and Fox News realize Obama is half WHITE!!!!!

  5. yorksnbeans says:

I do believe Clinton’s statement, but what throws it off is the level of animosity. If he were white, I believe there would be a more restrained opposition than what is now being displayed. They would pick and choose their battles more carefully instead of attacking everything single thing he attempts to do or achieve.

I love those outburst during political rallies. Next, we’ll have mosh pits!

  7. tannerleah says:

Obama is black? When the hell did that happen?

  8. George says:

Great looking comic, B! You did a nice job on the crowd, and I am so jealous of your curtain. I want a curtain like that.

  9. Byron says:

Not making excuses, but Jimmy is also a “good-ole boy” and he was inadvertently over compensating with his comment. In Carter’s lifetime alone, he’s seen the nation change in it’s attitude toward race (most of it good!). I mean, as child, he probably saw “black’s only” seats and the like. Disgusting, but that was the “norm” back then.

I agree, it is mostly politics, not race, that is the issue here. The race stuff just adds fuel to those few whack jobs out there. BTW, can we just forget about Obama’s birth certificate and move on to say, like, creating jobs and an economy again? Tell them I said thanks!

    Oh, nice comic too! 🙂

  10. John K says:

I’m a die hard Carter fan, but even I feel that he is letting emotion taint his logic. And between him and Clinton, I would of thought Clinton would be the emotional one!

  11. bschooled says:

Does Jimmy do patch jobs? I seem to have a leaky roof…

  12. spilledinkguy says:

Maybe P.J.C. has been choking on a peanut for years now and the resulting lack of oxygen has … ummm … been visually represented in the color of his wardrobe … and … affected … stuff. 🙂

  13. MidwestMom says:

Great job on the comic Bearman 🙂 I’m jealous that I can never draw that well

  14. Sheila Deeth says:

That one’s really neat. Nicely done.

  16. G says:

Me thinks that Carter is now suffering the side effects of inhaling too much peanut dust.

  17. Bo Lumpkin says:

Why can’t people realize that some of us are equal opportunity bashers. We don’t care what race, creed, color, or religion they are. If they are stupid politicians or public figures they get bashed. If they don’t want to be bashed they can sit at home and draw webcomics in obscurity like the rest of the world.

  18. Tony says:

    Nice comic and commentary.
